Frequently asked questions

What is the age limit for UPSC CSE?

You must be at least 21 and must not have reached 32 on 1 August of the exam year. For CSE 2027 that means born between 2 August 1995 and 1 August 2006 for the General category.

What is the age relaxation for OBC, SC and ST in UPSC?

OBC candidates eligible for reservation get 3 years (upper limit 35). SC and ST candidates get 5 years (upper limit 37). EWS candidates get no age relaxation.

How many attempts are allowed in UPSC CSE?

General and EWS: 6. OBC: 9. SC and ST: unlimited until the age limit. PwBD: 9 for General, EWS and OBC, unlimited for SC and ST.

When is an attempt counted in UPSC?

The moment you appear in any one paper of the Preliminary Examination. Applying and not appearing does not count.

What if my birthday is on 1 August?

Your age is counted on 1 August, so you complete that year on the cut-off day itself. A General candidate born on 1 August 1995 has reached 32 and is not eligible for CSE 2027; one born on 2 August 1995 is.

Is the J&K domicile age relaxation still available?

No. The current UPSC CSE notification does not provide any relaxation for Jammu and Kashmir domicile. The calculator does not apply it.

Do ex-servicemen and PwBD candidates get extra age relaxation?

Ex-servicemen with 5 years of military service get up to 5 years, defence personnel disabled in operations get 3 years, and PwBD candidates get 10 years. SC, ST and OBC candidates add their category relaxation on top.

Which date of birth does UPSC accept?

Only the one recorded in your Matriculation or Secondary School certificate (or equivalent). Affidavits or birth certificates are not accepted, and it cannot be changed later.

Plan your next step

You have the years. Now make each attempt count.

Knowing your last year can feel like a clock ticking. It does not have to. Aspirants who clear early are rarely the ones who read the most; they are the ones who saw, from the very first day, what the commission actually asks. Spend one evening with the real questions and the fear turns into a plan.
