The PLI scheme for food processing: what happened?

India grows huge volumes of fruit, veg and grain, but much of it leaves farms with little processing. PLISFPI pays firms for higher sales of specified foods and for building Indian brands abroad, so more value stays in the factory.

  • Category I: RTC/RTE (incl. millets), processed F&V, marine products, mozzarella cheese.
  • Category II: innovative/organic SME products across those segments (incl. free-range eggs, poultry meat and egg products).
  • Category III: branding and marketing abroad — 50% of eligible spend, capped at 3% of annual food sales or ₹50 crore a year; minimum ₹5 crore spend over five years; only fully India-made Indian brands.
  • PLISMBP: ₹800 crore millet-based products component from FY 2022-23.
  • Broader PLI covers 14 sectors with ₹1.97 lakh crore outlay; food is one of them.
  • GVA of food processing: ₹1.34 lakh crore (2014-15) to ₹2.24 lakh crore (2023-24).
  • Processed share of agri exports: 13.7% (2014-15) to 20.4% (2024-25).
