VB-G RAM G: what happened?
For two decades MGNREGA was the rural worker’s safety net. From 1 July 2026 a new law, VB-G RAM G, took its place across the country on a single day. Four days later the Centre sent the first big tranche of money so that wages can reach workers within 15 days.
- The Union Rural Development Minister reviewed the rollout with States and released ₹25,863 crore as the first instalment, based on State demand.
- No technical or operational issues were reported; MGNREGA had taken nearly three years to cover the country.
- Wage rates rose about 10% on average; no State has a wage below ₹300 a day.
- States were told to release their matching share on time so wages are paid within 15 days.
- Face Authentication and geo-tagging must be applied in full; Joint Secretary-led Area Officers will support States. Jharkhand was asked to notify its scheme.
What is VB-G RAM G?
- A rural employment and development law under the Viksit Bharat @2047 vision.
- It gives a statutory guarantee of 125 days of unskilled wage employment to every rural household whose adult members volunteer for manual work.
- Assets are planned through the Viksit Gram Panchayat Plan (VGPP).
- States notify their own schemes; MGNREGA Job Cards with e-KYC stay valid until Gramin Rozgar Guarantee Cards are issued.

How does a worker get work and wages under VB-G RAM G?
- Household registers with the Gram Panchayat for a Gramin Rozgar Guarantee Card
- Adult member demands work orally, in writing (form 6) or digitally
- Work given within 15 days, as far as possible within 5 km (10% extra beyond that, inside the block)

- Wages by DBT, weekly or within a fortnight of muster-roll closure
- Late wages: delay compensation of 0.05% of unpaid wages per day; no work in 15 days: unemployment allowance
Why does VB-G RAM G matter?
| Angle | What to note |
|---|---|
| Social | More guaranteed days (125) and a ₹300 floor raise the income of the poorest rural households. |
| Federal | States share costs (60:40 or 90:10) and must release their share on time; delay hits workers first. |
| Governance | No contractors, Janata Boards, weekly disclosure and face authentication aim to cut leakage. |
What are the challenges in VB-G RAM G?
- Timely wages depend on States releasing matching shares; the Minister had to remind them on day five.
- Jharkhand had not notified its scheme; Odisha and West Bengal had Gram Panchayats without works.
- Face authentication can exclude workers where networks are weak; the Act provides exception handling, but it must work in practice.
- A 40% district-level material cap limits asset-heavy works.
What should be done next on VB-G RAM G?
- Track the 15-day wage payment record State by State.
- Keep the face-authentication exception route simple for workers.
