Basic Numeracy (Class X level): Averages, speed and work

Key points

  • Ratio, averages and mixtures.
  • Time, speed and distance.

Prelims box: facts and traps

  • If the speeds of the cars are 50 km and 30 km per hour respectively, they will meet each other at Prelims 2014 Moving towards each other they close 50 + 30 = 80 km every hour. 160 km takes 2 hours. 8:10 + 2 hours = 10:10 AM.
  • CSAT 2020, Q57: A sum of ₹ 2,500 is distributed among X, Y and Z in the ratio 1/2: 3/4: 5/6.
  • CSAT 2020, Q71: A person X can complete 20% of work in 8 days and another person Y can complete 25% of the same work in 6 days.
  • CSAT 2016, Q51: The sum of the ages of 5 members comprising a family, 3 years ago was 80 years.
  • Trap: The corrected mean marks are Total = 100 × 40 = 4,000. 83 was counted instead of 53: 30 too many.
  • Trap: Average speed is total distance ÷ total time, not the average of the speeds.

Ratio, averages and mixtures

Average = total ÷ number. Most average questions are easier with totals: change the totals, then divide again. For a ratio a: b, think of a parts and b parts. For mixtures, track only the quantity of one item (milk, water or sugar).

CSAT 2019, Q40: The average marks of 100 students are given to be 40. It was found later that marks of one student were 53 which were misread as 83. The corrected mean marks are Total = 100 × 40 = 4,000. 83 was counted instead of 53: 30 too many. Correct total 3,970, mean 39.7. Answer (b).

The average age of the family today is the same as it was 3 years ago, because of an addition of a baby during the intervening period. How old is the baby? Prelims 2016 Three years ago the total was 80 for 5 people, average 16. Today those 5 are 3 years older each: 80 + 15 = 95. With the baby there are 6 people and the average is still 16, total 96. Baby = 96 − 95 = 1 year. Answer (b).

Time, speed and distance

Distance = speed × time. Two things moving towards each other close the gap at the sum of their speeds; one chasing the other closes it at the difference. Average speed is total distance ÷ total time, not the average of the speeds.

CSAT 2015, Q71: Two cities A and B are 360 km apart. A car goes from A to B with a speed of 40 km/hr and returns to A with a speed of 60 km/hr. What is the average speed of the car? Time and work, pipes

Give the whole job an easy number of units, such as the LCM of the days. Then each person’s daily work is units ÷ days, and people working together simply add their units. Pipes are the same: a tank of 60 units.

If both the pipes are opened simultaneously, how much time will they take to fill the tank completely? Prelims 2015 Tank = 60 units. A fills 3 units a minute, B 2 units. Practice MCQs (8)

Q1 · Battle IAS practice

A car covers 210 km in 3 hours 30 minutes at a steady speed. What is its speed?

Answer (b) & explanation

Step 1: Convert the time into hours: 3 hours 30 minutes = 3.5 hours (30 minutes is half an hour). Step 2: Speed = distance ÷ time = 210 ÷ 3.5 = 60 km/h.

Q2 · Battle IAS practice

A speed of 72 km/h is the same as:

Answer (a) & explanation

Step 1: 1 km = 1,000 m and 1 hour = 3,600 s, so 1 km/h = 1000/3600 = 5/18 m/s. Step 2: 72 km/h = 72 × 5/18 = 20 m/s.

Q3 · Battle IAS practice

What is the average of 12, 15, 18, 21 and 24?

Answer (a) & explanation

Step 1: Add the numbers: 12 + 15 + 18 + 21 + 24 = 90. Step 2: There are 5 numbers, so the average = 90 ÷ 5 = 18. Step 3: Shortcut: the numbers go up by the same step (3), so the average is simply the middle number, 18.

Q4 · Battle IAS practice

A car travels from town A to town B at 40 km/h and returns along the same road at 60 km/h. What is its average speed for the whole journey?

Answer (d) & explanation

Step 1: Take a convenient distance that both speeds divide, say 120 km each way. Step 2: Time going = 120 ÷ 40 = 3 h; time returning = 120 ÷ 60 = 2 h. Step 3: Average speed = total distance ÷ total time = 240 ÷ 5 = 48 km/h. Formula check: 2 × 40 × 60 ÷ (40 + 60) = 48.

Q5 · Battle IAS practice

A train 200 m long, running at 72 km/h, crosses a platform 300 m long. How much time does it take to cross the platform completely?

Answer (a) & explanation

Step 1: To cross a platform completely, the train covers its own length plus the platform's length: 200 + 300 = 500 m. Step 2: Speed = 72 × 5/18 = 20 m/s. Step 3: Time = 500 ÷ 20 = 25 s.

Q6 · Battle IAS practice

The average weight of 30 students in a class is 40 kg. When the teacher's weight is included, the average rises by 0.5 kg. What is the teacher's weight?

Answer (d) & explanation

Step 1: Total weight of students = 30 × 40 = 1,200 kg. Step 2: With the teacher there are 31 people with average 40.5 kg: 31 × 40.5 = 1,255.5 kg. Step 3: Teacher's weight = 1,255.5 − 1,200 = 55.5 kg. Step 4: Quick view: the teacher brings the new average (40.5) plus 0.5 kg for each of the 30 students: 40.5 + 15 = 55.5.

Q7 · Battle IAS practice

Section P has 40 students with an average score of 60, and Section Q has 60 students with an average score of 70. What is the average score of all 100 students taken together?

Answer (b) & explanation

Step 1: Total for P = 40 × 60 = 2,400. Step 2: Total for Q = 60 × 70 = 4,200. Step 3: Combined total = 6,600 for 100 students. Step 4: Combined average = 6,600 ÷ 100 = 66. Note: it is closer to 70 because Section Q is larger.

Q8 · Battle IAS practice

The average of 10 observations was calculated as 25. It was later found that one observation, 34, had been wrongly recorded as 43. Consider the following statements:
1. The correct average of the 10 observations is 25.9.
2. If every correct observation is then increased by 3, the new average will be 27.1.
Which of the statements given above is/are correct?

Answer (b) & explanation

Step 1: Recorded total = 10 × 25 = 250. Step 2: The recorded value 43 was 9 too high, so the correct total = 250 − 43 + 34 = 241. Correct average = 24.1. Statement 1 (25.9) adds the error instead of removing it, so it is incorrect. Step 3: Adding 3 to every observation adds 3 to the average: 24.1 + 3 = 27.1. Statement 2 is correct. Step 4: So 2 only.
