Economy

  • Pastoral to agrarian: cattle wealth (gavishti, 'search for cows', meant war) gave way to settled farming of rice, wheat and barley.
  • Iron (krishna ayas) from about 1000 BCE helped clear forests in the doab.
  • Specialised crafts and early trade; no coins yet.
  • Voluntary gifts (bali) became regular tribute to the king.

Society

  • A fluid, tribal varna order hardened into a four-fold hierarchy by birth.
  • Women, once present in the sabha and vidatha, were excluded later.
  • Gotra and the ashramas appeared; big sacrifices (rajasuya, ashvamedha) raised the priest's power.
  • Tribal assemblies weakened as territorial janapadas grew.

These changes laid the base for the Mahajanapadas of the sixth century BCE.
