Model answer

India has over 19,500 mother tongues (Census 2011), every major religion, and thousands of castes and tribes. Yet it has held together for nearly eight decades.

What binds

  • A shared civilisational memory: pilgrimage circuits, epics, festivals across regions.
  • The Constitution: fundamental rights, secularism, federalism, linguistic states.
  • A common market, the Railways, Indian cinema and cricket.
  • Democracy itself: elections give every group a stake.

Challenges

  • Communalism: riots from 1984 to Delhi 2020, and online hate.
  • Regionalism: sons-of-the-soil politics, river disputes, language rows over Hindi.
  • Insurgencies in the North-East.

Comment: the challenges are real but episodic. Most regional demands are now voiced through elections and federal bargaining, not secession. Manipur (2023) shows unity cannot be taken for granted.

Unity in diversity is still India's defining trait, but it is a practice to be renewed, not a fact to be assumed.
