Model answer

From the Stockton–Darlington line in England (1825), railways spread worldwide in the nineteenth century.

Economic effects

  • Industrial growth: in Britain, Germany and the USA, rail demand boosted coal, iron and steel and created national markets.
  • Opening of frontiers: the US transcontinental line (1869) and Russia's Trans-Siberian Railway opened vast lands to farming and mining.
  • Colonial extraction: in India (from 1853) and Africa, lines ran from mines and cash-crop areas to ports, serving the colonial economy and ruining local crafts.
  • Faster, cheaper transport helped famine relief but also drained grain away.

Social effects

  • Migration and the growth of cities and railway towns.
  • Standard time zones and new working habits.
  • Displacement of Native Americans and indigenous people.
  • In India, shared travel weakened some caste barriers and helped nationalist ideas and leaders move across the country.

Railways brought integration and modernity, though in colonies they mainly served the rulers.
