The PLFS June 2026 bulletin: what happened?
Every month, MoSPI tells us how many Indians are working or looking for work. Since January 2025 the PLFS has given monthly and quarterly numbers, and June 2026 is the fifteenth monthly bulletin. The headline this month is stability: the three main ratios did not move.
- Overall LFPR held at 54.4%, up from 54.2% in June 2025.
- Urban LFPR rose to 50.1% from 49.8% in May; rural stayed at 56.6%.
- Male WPR rose from 72.5% in May to 72.9%.
- Rural unemployment eased from 5.1% to 5.0%; urban rose from 6.4% to 6.6%.
- After rising every month since February 2026, rural male unemployment fell in June.
How is the PLFS run?
- The PLFS is conducted by the National Statistics Office (NSO), MoSPI, and is the primary source of data on employment and unemployment.
- Its method was changed from January 2025 to give monthly and quarterly estimates.
- Monthly bulletins give three all-India indicators: Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR), Worker Population Ratio (WPR) and Unemployment Rate (UR).
- They follow the Current Weekly Status (CWS) approach.
- Bulletins for April 2025 to May 2026 are already out; June 2026 is the fifteenth.
How did women fare?
- Female LFPR was 32.7% in June 2026, against 32.8% in May and 32.0% in June 2025.
- Rural female LFPR rose to 36.6%, 1.4 percentage points above June 2025 (35.2%).
- Urban female LFPR slipped to 24.8% from 25.2% a year earlier.
- So the yearly gain in women’s participation is driven by rural areas.
