UPSC Mains 2019 GS Paper 1 Q8: model answer
What makes the Indian society unique in sustaining its culture? Discuss.
What the question wants
Discuss the features that make Indian society unique in sustaining its culture.
How to structure it
Discuss: identify features and explain how each sustains culture.
- Pluralism and assimilation
- Family and community
- Oral and religious traditions
- Adaptation and conclusion
How to think it through
This is a cousin of Q2 (2015) and the GS1 culture continuity question. The keyword is 'sustaining': how does India keep its culture alive through invasions, colonial rule and globalisation? Assimilation, family, festivals, oral transmission and the ability to adapt.
Model answer
The Rig Veda was passed on orally for perhaps three thousand years with remarkable accuracy, which UNESCO recognised as Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2003. Indian culture has survived invasions, colonial rule and globalisation, and several features explain this.
Pluralism and assimilation
- India absorbed newcomers instead of being replaced by them: Greeks, Shakas, Turks, Mughals; syncretic forms such as Indo-Islamic architecture and Hindustani music.
Family and community
- Joint and extended families pass on language, rituals and values; caste and community networks support customs.
Oral and religious traditions
- Oral transmission of the Vedas, folk songs and epics; pilgrimage centres and festivals renew shared memories.
Adaptation
- Culture adapts to new technology: festivals on social media, Yoga as a global practice, Indian cinema.
- The diaspora carries Indian culture worldwide.
Constitutional support
- Article 29 protects the right to conserve distinct culture; the state supports heritage.
- Classical forms like Bharatanatyam and Carnatic music are taught in guru–shishya lines.
To sum up
India sustains its culture because it is flexible yet rooted: it changes forms while preserving core values.
Keywords, cases and data to drop in
Assimilation, syncretism, oral tradition, Article 29, diaspora, International Yoga Day.
Where most answers lose marks
- Describing diversity instead of explaining how culture is sustained.
