ECI’s fast release of election statistics: what happened?
After every election, ECI fills an Index Card for each constituency: candidates, electors, votes and more. Researchers use these to study elections. Earlier, officials filled them by hand, so they came late. ECINET has cut that to three days.
- Reports include State and AC-wise electors, polling stations, turnout, gender-wise participation and party vote share.
- The data in statutory forms kept by Returning Officers remains final; reports are built from Index Card data.
- ECI counts this among over 30 initiatives taken in the last year.
What is an Index Card?
- A constituency-level summary of an election: candidates, electors, votes polled, votes counted, and party-wise and candidate-wise votes. It is the base for ECI’s Statistical Reports.
Why does ECI’s fast release of election statistics matter?
- Transparency: Fast public data on elections.
- Research: Academics get data within days.
