The District Domestic Product guideline: what happened?
India’s GDP base moved to 2022-23 in 2026, so State and district figures must move too. Without one common method, districts in different States cannot be compared.
- A similar uniform guideline for Gross State Value Added (GSVA) was released on 7 May 2026.
- MoSPI is working to bring all States/UTs into DDP compilation.
Why do State and district GDP figures matter?
- The Finance Commission uses GSDP to judge States’ fiscal capacity, for example in the per capita GSDP distance criterion for tax devolution.
- The Department of Expenditure fixes State borrowing limits as a percentage of GSDP.
- District figures help decentralised planning and regional analysis.
Why does the District Domestic Product guideline matter?
- Planning: Comparable district data for targeting development.
- Federalism: State and district accounts feed fiscal transfers.
What can Prelims ask on the District Domestic Product guideline?
- DDP guideline (base 2022-23): 3 Jun 2026; GSVA guideline: 7 May 2026.
- GSDP = GSVA + net taxes on products.
- 26 States/UTs compile DDP.
