The Land Port Management System (VINIMAY): what happened?

Land ports are the Integrated Check Posts on India’s land borders, where trucks and travellers cross to and from neighbouring countries. Delays there raise trade costs, and weak data sharing there is a security gap. VINIMAY tries to fix both.

  • LPMS brings cargo management, vehicle processing and inter-agency coordination onto one platform.
  • A Single Electronic Window and Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) gates replace much of the paper work.
  • Real-time data will be shared among ICEGATE, the Motor Vehicle System, CBIC, BSF, DGFT, UIDAI and ULIP.
  • The Home Ministry links it to its Smart Borders plan under a four-pronged border security strategy.
Back Story

What does a land port do?

  • A land port handles cargo, passengers and vehicles crossing a land border, with customs, immigration and security agencies working at one place.
  • The release frames land ports in three roles: first line of defence for security, a means to facilitate trade, and a bridge for people-to-people contact.
