New WPI base 2022-23 and producer price indices: what happened?
India still leans on WPI for contracts and policy talk, while most advanced systems use producer price indices. Publishing Output and Input PPIs next to a refreshed WPI is the bridge the IMF-style playbook asks for.
- Electricity group now includes solar, wind and nuclear electricity.
- Crude petroleum and natural gas moved from Primary Articles to Fuel and Power.
- Weights use Gross Value of Output (GVO), not Net Traded Value.
- Elementary indices: short-term formulation; missing prices: Targeted Mean Imputation (not carry-forward).
- Linking factors (2011-12 to 2022-23): All Commodities 1.53; Primary Articles 1.71; Fuel and Power 1.65; Manufactured Products 1.44.
- Service PPIs (quarterly): banking, securities transaction, insurance, pension-fund management, railways, air (passenger), telecom — Q4 of 2025-26 provisional.
- May 2026 major-group YoY: Primary Articles 4.99%; Fuel and Power 30.33%; Manufactured Products 7.48%. Food Index inflation 4.49% (weight 24.99%).
Why add PPI beside WPI?
- WPI will still be published for five years so escalation clauses can migrate; then WPI stops. PPI aligns with practices in advanced economies and IMF recommendations.
- Output vs Input PPI shows how input cost pressure passes into output prices.
