What happened

  • DFS said 30 September 2025 is the last date for eligible employees and past retirees under NPS to opt for the Unified Pension Scheme (notified 24.01.2025) [PIB].
  • A one-time, one-way switch from UPS back to NPS is allowed, at least one year before superannuation or three months before voluntary retirement [PIB].
  • Employees who joined between 01.04.2025 and 31.08.2025 and chose NPS also got a one-time option to move to UPS [PIB].

Background

  • The switch is not allowed in cases of dismissal or compulsory retirement as penalty [PIB].
