What happened

  • The Election Commission revised the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) schedule in six States/UT at the request of their CEOs, with 1 January 2026 as qualifying date [PIB].
  • Uttar Pradesh gets the longest extension: enumeration by 26 December and draft roll on 31 December 2025. Tamil Nadu and Gujarat publish drafts on 19 December; MP, Chhattisgarh and A&N Islands on 23 December [PIB].

Background

  • Earlier, enumeration in these six was to end on 11 December with drafts on 16 December [PIB]. Rolls are prepared under the Representation of the People Act, 1950.

Why it matters

  • Clean rolls are basic to free elections. The SIR has also raised concerns about eligible voters being left out, which the Supreme Court has been hearing.
