DRDL runs scramjet combustor for over 1,200 seconds

Battle IAS current affairs title card: DRDL runs scramjet combustor for over 1,200 seconds (GS3 · Hypersonics, 9 May 2026)
Battle Brief

DRDO’s Defence Research & Development Laboratory ran its actively cooled full-scale scramjet combustor for over 1,200 seconds at the Scramjet Connect Pipe Test facility in Hyderabad on 9 May 2026. This builds on a test of over 700 seconds in January. It uses an indigenous liquid hydrocarbon endothermic fuel and is a base for hypersonic cruise missiles.

DRDL’s long-duration scramjet combustor test: what happened?

A scramjet is an air-breathing engine that works at hypersonic speed. Keeping it burning for long is very hard, because the heat is extreme. Twenty minutes on the ground is a big step toward a hypersonic cruise missile.

  • The combustor was designed by DRDL and made by industry partners.
  • The test validated both the combustor design and the test facility.
Back Story

What is a scramjet?

  • A supersonic combustion ramjet: an air-breathing engine where air stays supersonic inside the combustor. The release calls it a supersonic air-breathing engine.
Why examiners care

Why does DRDL’s long-duration scramjet combustor test matter?

  • Defence: Path to hypersonic cruise missiles.
  • Technology: Indigenous fuel and cooling know-how.
Exam Radar

What can Prelims ask on DRDL’s long-duration scramjet combustor test?

  • DRDL scramjet combustor: over 1,200 seconds on 9 May 2026 (earlier over 700 seconds).
  • Uses indigenous liquid hydrocarbon endothermic fuel.
