India’s Q1 2026-27 GDP estimates: what happened?

The quarterly GDP release is the first hard look at how the economy did in the months just gone. This one is also among the first full quarterly releases under the new 2022-23 base. Students should know the headline numbers, the method and the warning signs hidden in the indicator table.

  • Real GDP in Q1 of 2025-26 was ₹75.46 lakh crore; nominal GDP was ₹80.00 lakh crore.
  • Real GVA rose from ₹68.21 lakh crore to ₹73.82 lakh crore; nominal GVA from ₹72.24 lakh crore to ₹80.53 lakh crore.
  • Annual Revised Estimates for 2022-23 to 2024-25 were updated with the new PPI and Banking Services Price Index.
  • The quarterly method follows the IMF’s Quarterly National Accounts Manual, 2017.
  • “Sources and Methods” publication is due by September 2026.
Back Story

How are quarterly estimates made?

  • MoSPI uses the Benchmark-Indicator method: the previous year’s estimates are extrapolated with indicators of each sector’s performance.
  • Production-side indicators include crop estimates, IIP, GST data, steel use, vehicle sales, air traffic, railway and port cargo, telecom and bank data.
  • Expenditure-side indicators include RBI’s Balance of Payments, e-VAHAN registrations, trade data and foodgrain offtake.
  • Manufacturing GVA uses double deflation: output and inputs are deflated separately with Producer Price Indices.
Back Story

Why can the manufacturing deflator turn negative?

  • When input prices, such as crude oil, gas and raw materials, rise faster than output prices, the price part of value added can fall.
  • The implicit GVA deflator can then show negative growth even though all prices rose.
  • The old series used one deflator for both output and inputs.
