CCPA fines Rapido ₹10 lakh for dark patterns in tipping prompts

On 15 September 2026 the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) imposed a ₹10 lakh penalty on the company that runs the Rapido ride-hailing app. It found two dark patterns, “confirm shaming” and “interface interference”, in prompts that pushed riders to pay more before a ride was confirmed, and ordered the platform to stop them.

The CCPA penalty on Rapido: what happened?
A dark pattern is a design trick in an app that nudges you into doing something you did not plan to, like paying more. CCPA had been examining how cab and bike-taxi apps handle advance tips and dynamic pricing. The order against Rapido comes out of that review.
- CCPA fined Rapido ₹10 lakh for misleading advertisements, unfair trade practices, unfair contract and dark patterns.
- After a rider booked at a quoted fare, the app showed prompts like “Captains aren’t accepting at ₹60. Try adding +10, +20, +30”.
- CCPA held this was “confirm shaming”: it creates fear of losing the ride unless the rider pays more.
- The “Set your price” slider showed green for a higher price and red or orange for a lower one, and had more room to go up than down; CCPA held this was “interface interference”.
- Rapido was directed to stop the misleading prompts and practices.
What exactly did CCPA say about “tips”?
- The fare shown at booking already includes distance, time, traffic, tolls and the captain’s share.
- A tip is normally a voluntary payment made after a service, not a condition for getting it.
- The Motor Vehicle Aggregator Guidelines, 2025 allow a tipping feature only after the ride is completed, not at booking or during the ride.
- Rapido gave no data showing that paying extra actually raises the chance of getting a ride, so the claim was unsubstantiated and misleading.
Why did CCPA reject Rapido’s defence?
- Rapido said tipping was voluntary and that its matching algorithm worked the same either way.
- It compared the prompts to an offline chat between rider and driver.
- CCPA said the timing and design put pressure on the rider at the moment the rider depended most on the platform.
Which law gives CCPA these powers?
- Consumer Protection Act, 2019: CCPA works to protect consumers as a class, prevent unfair trade practices and stop false or misleading advertisements.
- Guidelines for Prevention and Regulation of Dark Patterns, 2023: list dark patterns such as confirm shaming and interface interference.
- Motor Vehicle Aggregator Guidelines, 2025: tipping only after the ride is completed.
How did the prompt work on a rider?
- Rider sees a quoted fare and books
- App says captains are not accepting that price
- App suggests adding +10, +20 or +30
- Rider, already committed, feels pressure to pay more
- CCPA: this is confirm shaming, a dark pattern
Why does the CCPA penalty on Rapido matter?
| Angle | What to note |
|---|---|
| Consumer rights | Sets out that a “tip” cannot be a condition for getting a service. |
| Digital markets | Shows that app design itself, not only the words, can mislead. |
| Regulation | Uses the 2023 Dark Patterns Guidelines against a large platform. |
| Gig economy | Separates fair pay for drivers from pressure tactics on riders. |
| Governance | Part of a sector-wide review; notices also went to Uber, Ola and Namma Yatri. |
What are the challenges in the CCPA penalty on Rapido?
- A ₹10 lakh penalty may be small for a large platform, so deterrence depends on follow-up.
- Dynamic pricing itself is legal; the line between pricing and pressure can be hard to draw.
- The review of Uber and Ola is still ongoing.
- Many users do not know where to complain.
What should be done next on the CCPA penalty on Rapido?
- Finish the review of other platforms and apply one standard to all.
- Platforms should move any tip option to after the ride, as the 2025 guidelines require.
- Spread awareness of the National Consumer Helpline (1915).
