The EPFO wage ceiling: what happened?
The wage ceiling decides who must be enrolled in EPFO. Today a new worker earning above ₹15,000 a month is not covered automatically, and may stay outside provident fund, pension and insurance. Wages have risen since 2014, so many ordinary jobs now pay above the old limit.
- Wage ceiling for mandatory EPFO coverage raised from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 a month.
- Workers in the ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 band come under the statutory social security net.
- They get provident fund savings, pension under the Employees’ Pension Scheme (EPS) and insurance under the Employees’ Deposit Linked Insurance Scheme (EDLI).
- Contributions and pensionable wage will better match present wage levels.
- The Labour Ministry and EPFO will take the statutory and administrative steps to implement it.
