Safety of Indian seafarers: what happened?

India supplies a large share of the world’s merchant seafarers, and most of them sail on foreign-flagged ships. When wars spill onto sea lanes, Indian crews are among the first to be hit, even when India is not party to the conflict.

  • 12 July: GFS Galaxy off Oman (one Indian missing). 14 July: MT Al Bahiyah and MT Mombasa in the Strait of Hormuz (one Indian killed).
  • 18-19 July: MV Omorfi in the Black Sea (one killed); MV Golden Leo at Odesa (four Indians killed).
  • 4 August: Indian-flagged MSV Faize Noore Oliya sank in the Red Sea off Yemen; all 13 rescued.
  • September: MT El Gaia (13 Sep) and MV Cape Dao (23 Sep, one killed) off Oman.
  • October: MT On Peace in Hormuz (6 Oct); Black Sea attacks on Alfa Watan, Able and Aframax Rio (6-7 Oct).
Back Story

Why are Indian seafarers so exposed?

  • Most Indian seafarers work on ships flagged in other countries (for example Liberia, Palau, Togo in this list), so India’s direct protection is limited.
  • Two conflict zones sit on major trade routes: West Asia (Hormuz, Red Sea) and the Black Sea.
  • The Strait of Hormuz links the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman; much of the world’s oil passes through it.
