AITIGA review: what happened?

India has long said this goods pact with ASEAN is unbalanced, and the two sides are reviewing it to bring it up to date. Each Joint Committee meeting is a checkpoint in that review.

  • The Joint Committee directed all sub-committees to expedite pending chapters of the review with firm, time-bound deliverables.
  • Sub-committees on Legal and Institutional Issues, National Treatment and Market Access, and Rules of Origin met on the sidelines.
  • Both sides said they want to resolve outstanding policy issues and modernise the Agreement.
Back Story

What is AITIGA and why is it being reviewed?

  • AITIGA is India’s goods free trade agreement with the ten ASEAN members: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Viet Nam.
  • A review aims to update the Agreement so that it is more balanced and mutually beneficial for trade.
  • Rules of origin decide how much value must be added in a country for a product to get the lower duty; weak rules let third-country goods pass through a partner at concessional rates.
