India-Africa relations: what happened?
Three countries in one trip, two in West Africa and one in the Horn. India’s Africa policy rests on development partnership, training and trade, and this visit touched all three.
- Ghana: EAM called on President John Dramani Mahama, met FM Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, signed two MoUs (academic and scientific research, capacity building; agricultural research and education) and received Ghana’s Instrument of Acceptance for the International Big Cat Alliance.
- Ghana acknowledged India’s role in getting the African Union permanent membership of the G20 during India’s presidency. EAM appreciated Ghana’s leadership on reparatory justice and return of cultural property.
- Côte d’Ivoire: EAM met President Alassane Ouattara and the Defence Minister; both sides noted bilateral trade above US$1.5 billion and met ITEC alumni.
- Ethiopia: EAM met PM Abiy Ahmed Ali, visited the Adwa Victory Museum, announced the next Jaipur Artificial Limb Fitment Camp and offered training in forensic science, women and child development and media governance.
What is the base of India’s Africa policy?
- Capacity building through ITEC (Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation): Indian training courses for officials of partner countries. EAM met ITEC alumni in Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire.
- Development partnership: projects and camps such as Jaipur Foot. The 2024 camp in Ethiopia’s Afar region gave prosthetic limbs to about 450 people.
- Global South voice: India pushed the African Union into the G20 as a permanent member during its 2023 presidency.
What is the International Big Cat Alliance?
- An India-led alliance for conserving the world’s big cats; members join by depositing an instrument of acceptance, which Ghana handed over on this visit.

Why does India-Africa relations matter?
| Angle | What to note |
|---|---|
| Strategic | Ethiopia hosts the African Union headquarters in Addis Ababa; ties with it carry continental weight. |
| Economic | Trade, mining and pharma are named priority areas; Africa is a market for Indian medicines. |
| Soft power | ITEC alumni, Jaipur Foot and training build long-term goodwill. |
