The Hormuz shipping crisis: what happened?
The Gulf region is in conflict, and ships passing near the Strait of Hormuz keep getting hit. Many of those ships carry Indian crew. On 11 October MEA put out two short statements: one on attacks on tankers, one on Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia.
- On 11 October 2026 India condemned attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz region. The tanker MT PETRO DOLPHIN was reportedly struck by a drone, and two of the 11 Indian seafarers on board were reported missing [MEA].
- MT VALTHERA, a Marshall Islands-flagged tanker, was hit by an unknown projectile and caught fire; all 11 Indian seafarers on board were reported safe [MEA].
- The Embassy of India in Muscat is coordinating with Omani authorities and the ship management companies for the rescue of the missing Indians [MEA].
- In a separate statement, India strongly condemned repeated Houthi attacks on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, including the attack of October 10, and stood in solidarity with Saudi Arabia [MEA].
Why does the Strait of Hormuz matter to India?
- It is the narrow sea passage between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, so ships leaving Gulf ports must pass through it.
- Much of the crude oil and gas India buys comes from Gulf countries, so trouble here hits India’s energy supply and prices.
- Indian seafarers work on ships of many flags. That is why a Marshall Islands-flagged tanker still had 11 Indians on board.
What exactly did India say?
- Recurring attacks on commercial shipping are “deeply concerning” and risk making a volatile situation worse.
- Attacks on commercial vessels, seafarers and civilian infrastructure must stop; India wants immediate de-escalation, dialogue and diplomacy.
- Freedom of navigation and the safe, unimpeded flow of maritime commerce through international waterways must be upheld, in line with international law.
- On Riyadh: attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure are “completely unacceptable”; India stands with Saudi Arabia in defence of its sovereignty.
Why does the Hormuz shipping crisis matter?
- Seafarers: Protecting Indian crew abroad is a consular duty; the Muscat embassy is leading rescue coordination.
- Energy and trade: Hormuz is a chokepoint for Gulf oil and cargo; attacks raise freight and insurance costs.
- Diplomacy: India condemns attacks on both shipping and a Gulf partner while asking all sides to talk.
What can Prelims ask on the Hormuz shipping crisis?
- Strait of Hormuz links the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman.
- Muscat is the capital of Oman; Riyadh is the capital of Saudi Arabia.
- A ship’s flag State (here, Marshall Islands) can differ from its crew’s nationality.
- Houthis are the group named by India for the attacks on King Khalid International Airport.
