India’s naval outreach: what happened?

Exercise names are a Prelims favourite: which country, which service, where. This week two Indian warships are at opposite ends of the world, one in Russia’s Far East and one in southern England.

  • INS Sahyadri reached Vladivostok, Russia, on 10 Oct 2026 for Exercise INDRA 2026, a bilateral exercise between the Indian Navy and the Russian Federation Navy scheduled from 13 to 18 Oct 2026 [PIB].
  • INS Trishul, a guided missile stealth frigate, reached Plymouth, UK, for KONKAN-26, the annual India-UK bilateral maritime exercise with the Royal Navy, held off Plymouth in two phases [PIB].
  • KONKAN-26 sea drills cover all three domains (air, surface and sub-surface): cross-deck landings, firing, air defence and anti-submarine exercises [PIB].

What will the navies do?

  • INDRA 2026: a harbour phase of professional engagements, then coordinated operations at sea, plus social and cultural interactions.
  • KONKAN-26: a harbour phase (cross-deck visits, sports, ship open to visitors) and a sea phase with drills in air, surface and sub-surface domains: cross-deck landings, firing serials, air defence and anti-submarine exercises.
  • PIB says KONKAN has grown in scale and complexity over two decades.
Back Story

How do these fit India’s policy?

  • PIB ties INDRA to MAHASAGAR, the Government of India vision for maritime security and growth across regions, and to the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit held in December 2025.
  • KONKAN reflects the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in the India-UK Vision 2035.
Why examiners care

Why does India’s naval outreach matter?

  • Defence: Interoperability: navies practise working together before a real crisis.
  • Diplomacy: Exercising with Russia and the UK in the same week shows strategic autonomy in action.
