  2. French Revolution's legacy

How to think it through

Your Constitution's Preamble is a good map: liberty, equality, fraternity, sovereignty of the people. Half of those words came from Philadelphia (1776, 1787) and Paris (1789). Show each idea, then where it went next: Latin America, Europe's 1848 revolutions and India's freedom struggle.

Model answer

Article 1 of the French Declaration of 1789, 'Men are born and remain free and equal in rights', is the ancestor of Article 14 of India's Constitution. The American (1775–83) and French (1789) Revolutions turned Enlightenment ideas into political reality.

American Revolution

  • The Declaration of Independence (1776): natural rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness; government by consent.
  • The US Constitution (1787) and the Bill of Rights (1791): a written constitution, federalism, separation of powers, judicial review (Marbury v. Madison, 1803).
  • The first successful colonial revolt, inspiring anti-colonial movements.

French Revolution

  • The Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen (1789): equality before law, popular sovereignty.
  • End of feudal privileges and absolute monarchy; the idea of the nation as citizens.
  • Liberty, equality, fraternity; secular state; the metric system; the Napoleonic Code spread legal equality across Europe.
  • The terms 'left' and 'right' in politics.

Global impact

  • Latin American independence movements, the 1830 and 1848 revolutions, nationalism in Europe.
  • Ideas of rights and republicanism influenced Indian nationalists and the Indian Constitution's Preamble.

Economic and social foundations

  • The abolition of feudal dues created free peasants and markets; the US Constitution protected property and contracts, supporting capitalism.
  • Slavery's abolition in French colonies (1794, reversed and finally abolished in 1848) and Haiti's revolution (1791–1804) showed revolutionary ideas reaching the colonised.

Limits

  • The American Revolution kept slavery and excluded women and Native Americans; the French Revolution led to the Terror and Napoleon's dictatorship.
  • Yet these limits themselves became targets of later struggles, extending rights to all.

Conclusion

Together the two revolutions gave the modern world its basic vocabulary: rights, citizenship, constitutionalism and popular sovereignty.

Draw: Two-column table: American and French legacies → modern institutions.
