What the question wants

Analyse internal security threats and cross-border crimes along the Myanmar, Bangladesh and Pakistan borders and the LoC, and discuss the role of the security forces.

How to structure it

Border by border, then forces.

  1. Myanmar
  2. Bangladesh
  3. Pakistan border
  4. LoC
  5. Role of forces
  6. Gaps

How to think it through

Myanmar 1,643 km Assam Rifles; Bangladesh 4,096.7 km BSF; Pakistan IB 3,323 km incl LoC (~740 km LoC Army operational control, BSF under Army on LoC), Rajasthan, Gujarat Sir Creek. Threats: Myanmar—insurgents, drugs, arms, refugees. Bangladesh—illegal migration, cattle smuggling, FICN, Phensedyl/yaba, trafficking, JMB. Pakistan IB—drones in Punjab, tunnels Jammu (Samba, Kathua), narco, arms. LoC—infiltration, ceasefire violations (Feb 2021 ceasefire understanding), BAT actions. Forces role: Army (LoC, LAC), BSF, Assam Rifles, SSB, ITBP; Coast Guard; NIA; state police; BGF coordination with BGB.

Model answer

India's western and eastern land borders carry very different threats. In Punjab, the BSF fights drones dropping heroin at night. In West Bengal, it watches cattle and fake-currency smugglers on riverine stretches. In the Kashmir valley, the Army watches the LoC for infiltrators.

Myanmar border (about 1,643 km)

  • Insurgent camps, arms and drug trafficking from the Golden Triangle.
  • Refugee inflows after the 2021 coup; arms flows linked to the Manipur violence.
  • Guarded by the Assam Rifles.

Bangladesh border (about 4,097 km)

  • Illegal migration and fake identity papers.
  • Cattle, gold and fake currency smuggling, and drugs like yaba.
  • Human trafficking of women and children.
  • Radical groups like the JMB.
  • Guarded by the BSF.

Pakistan border (International Border)

  • Drone drops of drugs and weapons in Punjab and Jammu.
  • Cross-border tunnels in the Samba and Kathua sectors.
  • Narco-terror networks linking smugglers and militants.
  • Guarded by the BSF.

Line of Control

  • Infiltration of terrorists into J&K.
  • Ceasefire violations; a renewed understanding was reached in February 2021.
  • BAT raids by Pakistani forces and terrorists.
  • Under the Army, with BSF units under its operational control.

Role of the security forces

  • Army: guards the LoC and runs counter-infiltration.
  • BSF: Pakistan and Bangladesh borders, with flag meetings with the Bangladesh BGB.
  • Assam Rifles: Myanmar border and counter-insurgency.
  • SSB and ITBP: Nepal, Bhutan and China borders.
  • State police, NIA and NCB follow up on crime networks inland.

Gaps

  • Unfenced riverine and hilly stretches.
  • Coordination between forces, intelligence agencies and states.
  • Local complicity in smuggling in some border villages.
  • Fatigue and overstretch of personnel posted for long spells in harsh terrain.
  • Slow rollout of smart fencing under CIBMS.

Each border has its own crime; each force must know its ground, and all must share one picture.

Draw: A map with the three borders and the LoC, each marked with its main threats and guarding force.

Keywords, cases and data to drop in

Myanmar 1,643 km, Bangladesh 4,097 km, Assam Rifles, BSF, LoC, Army, drones, tunnels Samba-Kathua, yaba, cattle smuggling, FICN, JMB, ceasefire understanding Feb 2021, BAT, BGB flag meetings, CIBMS.

Where most answers lose marks

  • Merging all borders into one generic list; the question names each border and the LoC separately.

Face-off with China continues in Arunachal: ITBP chief confirms stand-off at Asaphila

ITBP Director General Shatrujeet Kapur said on 22 October 2026 that face-offs with Chinese troops are continuing at several places along the Arunachal Pradesh border. It is the first official confirmation of the scale of tension since July, when Chinese troops pitched tents 6–7 km inside India’s perception of the Line of Actual Control near Asaphila in Upper Subansiri. Three rounds of high-level talks have not ended it, so the ITBP is betting on drones and underground shelters.
