Kargil Vijay Diwas: what happened?

Kargil Vijay Diwas honours the soldiers who fought in the 1999 Kargil conflict. This event was organised by the Jammu Kashmir Peoples’ Forum with the POJK Youth Forum.

• The Minister said the events of 1999 must be seen as part of a long sequence starting with Partition, including the wars of 1947, 1965, 1971 and Kargil.
• He said India adopted zero tolerance towards terrorism, strengthened border management and moved from a reactive to a proactive security doctrine.
• He listed J&K projects: rail link to the Kashmir Valley, the world’s highest railway bridge, new AIIMS and irrigation projects.
• He pointed to growth in indigenous defence production and defence exports.

• A PIB backgrounder notes that the first warning of the Kargil intrusion came from local residents, who reported suspicious movement in the Kargil sector on 3 May 1999.
