UPSC Mains 2021 GS Paper 1 Q9: model answer
Examine the uniqueness of tribal knowledge system when compared with mainstream knowledge and cultural systems.
What the question wants
Examine what makes tribal knowledge unique compared with mainstream knowledge and culture.
How to structure it
Examine: identify unique features, compare, and note why they matter today.
- Features of tribal knowledge
- Contrast with mainstream systems
- Value today
- Threats and conclusion
How to think it through
Tribal knowledge is like a library with no books: it lives in songs, rituals, farming and forest practice. Compare it with mainstream knowledge (written, specialised, market-driven). Then show its value: biodiversity, medicine, climate adaptation. Examples: Bishnoi conservation, the So-liga's forest knowledge, Apatani rice–fish farming.
Model answer
The Kani tribe's arogyapacha plant became the drug 'Jeevani', and in the mid-1990s the tribe received a share of the licence fees, one of the first such deals.
Unique features
- Oral and experiential: passed through songs, stories, rituals and practice.
- Integrated: no separation between ecology, religion and livelihood; sacred groves protect forests.
- Community-owned: knowledge belongs to the group, not individuals.
- Local adaptation: Apatani paddy-cum-fish farming in Arunachal; zabo farming in Nagaland; medicinal plant knowledge of many tribes.
Contrast with mainstream systems
- Mainstream knowledge is written, specialised, individual (patents) and market-oriented; tribal knowledge is oral, integrated and collective.
Value today
- Biodiversity conservation and climate adaptation; traditional medicine (the Kani tribe's knowledge behind 'Jeevani', with benefit-sharing).
- Sustainable lifestyles that Mission LiFE now promotes.
Threats
- Loss of language, displacement, biopiracy; the Biological Diversity Act (2002) and the FRA (2006) offer some protection.
Where this leaves India
Tribal knowledge is unique because it unites ecology and culture. Recognising and protecting it can enrich mainstream science and sustainability.
Keywords, cases and data to drop in
Sacred groves, Apatani, zabo, Kani–Jeevani benefit-sharing, Biological Diversity Act 2002, TKDL.
Where most answers lose marks
- Romanticising tribal life as 'primitive' or 'backward'. Avoid both.
