Model answer

Geography set the stage for ancient India's settlements, states and culture.

  • River plains: the Indus and its tributaries supported the Harappan cities; later the fertile Ganga plain fed the janapadas and Mahajanapadas.
  • Iron and forests: iron ore near Rajgir and the forests of south Bihar gave Magadha tools, timber and elephants, helping it build an empire.
  • Monsoon: rain-fed farming set the agrarian calendar; good rains meant surplus, taxes and towns.
  • Himalaya and passes: the mountains protected the north, while the Khyber and Bolan passes let in Persians, Greeks, Shakas and Kushanas, along with trade and ideas.
  • Vindhyas and the Deccan: they kept the south politically separate, allowing Satavahana, Chola and Pandya power to grow on their own lines.
  • Long coastline: ports like Arikamedu, Muziris and Tamralipti linked India with Rome and Southeast Asia, spreading Buddhism and Indian culture.

Geography offered opportunities; the people who used them shaped ancient India's unity in diversity.
