Model answer
International aid rests on the moral idea that the well-off should help those in need. Today it also serves strategy, so its ethics are often questioned.
Ethical aid
- Need-based and timely: India's Vaccine Maitri sent COVID vaccines to many countries in 2021; Operation Dost helped Türkiye and Syria after the 2023 earthquake.
- Respect for dignity and sovereignty: demand-driven projects, such as India's lines of credit chosen by partners.
- Capacity-building: training under ITEC.
Ethical concerns
- Strategic and tied aid: help given for influence or on condition of buying from donors.
- Debt traps: Sri Lanka handed Hambantota port on lease to a Chinese firm in 2017.
- Harsh conditionalities that hurt the poor.
- Corruption and dependency in recipient states.
- Aid cuts: sharp reductions by major donors in 2025 hit health programmes.
Ethical aid follows humanity, impartiality and local ownership. It should be partnership, not charity or leverage.
