UP’s maize procurement policy: what happened?

Maize is a coarse grain. A rabi or spring maize crop is now grown in many UP districts, and farmers often sell below the support price when there is no government buyer nearby. Opening purchase centres gives them a floor.

How will the purchase work?

• The Marketing Wing of the Food Department will buy the maize.
• Centres open 9 am to 6 pm on working days, including local holidays and the second Saturday; DMs may change timings.
• Farmers need a computerised verified khatauni, a photo ID and Aadhaar.
• Land and sown area are verified online through the Revenue Department’s land records website.
• Payment goes to Aadhaar-linked, NPCI-mapped bank accounts through PFMS, as far as possible within 48 hours.

Which districts are covered?

• Firozabad, Agra, Mainpuri, Aligarh, Kasganj, Hathras, Etah, Budaun, Shahjahanpur, Rampur, Sambhal, Bulandshahr and Hapur.
• Kanpur Nagar, Auraiya, Etawah, Kannauj, Farrukhabad, Hardoi, Unnao, Bahraich, Ballia, Gonda, Fatehpur and Mirzapur.
• The Food Commissioner can allow purchase in other districts depending on arrivals.
