Given below are two statements, one is labelled as Assertion (A) and the other as Reason (R).

Assertion (A): Poverty line differs across time and countries.

Reason (R): The basic needs of people vary across regions and overtime.

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (d) & explanation

Option (d), both true and R explains A, is correct. A poverty line is the money needed to meet basic needs such as food, clothing, shelter, health and education. What counts as 'basic' and what it costs differ from place to place and change over time. So India's poverty line differs from that of developed countries, and India itself revised its line through the Lakdawala, Tendulkar and Rangarajan committees. The World Bank's international line was raised from $2.15 to $3.00 a day (2021 PPP) in 2025. Concept: poverty can be absolute, measured against a fixed line, or relative, compared with others in society. The multidimensional poverty index also looks at health, education and living standards. Trap: R gives the reason, so (a) is wrong.

Trap

R explains A: basic needs vary by place and time.

Consider the following and arrange them in the correct chronological order.

  • 1. Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation
  • 2. Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission
  • 3. Jal Jeevan Mission
  • 4. National Urban Housing and Habitat Policy

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (a) & explanation

Option (a), 2, 4, 1, 3, is correct. The Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) was launched in December 2005 for urban infrastructure and basic services to the urban poor. The National Urban Housing and Habitat Policy came in 2007, aiming at affordable housing for all. AMRUT (Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation) began in June 2015 for water supply, sewerage and green spaces in 500 cities. The Jal Jeevan Mission began in August 2019 to give every rural household a tap connection, and was later extended to 2028. Options (b), (c) and (d) misorder these. Concept: AMRUT 2.0 (2021) aims at water security in all towns. The Smart Cities Mission and PMAY-Urban also began in 2015. Trap: the housing policy came after JNNURM.

Trap

The Urban Housing Policy (2007) came before AMRUT (2015); JNNURM (2005) is first.

Which among the following is/are NOT a social indicator of poverty?

  • 1. Illiteracy
  • 2. Safe drinking water
  • 3. Job opportunities
  • 4. Size of the house

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (c) & explanation

Option (c), only 4, is correct per the key. Social indicators of poverty measure deprivation in human development: illiteracy (1), lack of access to safe drinking water and sanitation (2), and lack of job opportunities or unemployment (3). Others include poor healthcare, child malnutrition and lack of social security. These come from the NCERT Class IX textbook's view of poverty as more than income. Size of the house (4) is not listed as a social indicator in that framework, though housing quality appears in multidimensional indices. Concept: the economic indicator is income or consumption below the poverty line. NITI Aayog's MPI uses 12 indicators, including housing, cooking fuel and assets. Note: housing does appear in modern measures, so the key rests on the textbook framing.

Trap

Illiteracy, water and jobs are social indicators; house size is not.

Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana comes under which of the following?

  • 1. Ministry of Corporate Affairs
  • 2. Ministry of Rural Development
  • 3. Ministry of Finance

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (c) & explanation

Option (c), only 3, is correct. Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana was launched in April 2015 and is run by the Department of Financial Services in the Ministry of Finance (3). It is not under the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (1) or the Ministry of Rural Development (2), so options (a), (b) and (d) are wrong. It provides collateral-free loans to non-corporate, non-farm micro enterprises through banks, NBFCs and MFIs. The loan categories are Shishu (up to ₹50,000), Kishore (up to ₹5 lakh) and Tarun (up to ₹10 lakh), plus a new Tarun Plus category (up to ₹20 lakh) added in the 2024 Budget. Concept: MUDRA Ltd is a refinancing body set up under SIDBI. Stand-Up India (2016) is a related scheme for SC/ST and women entrepreneurs. Trap: it is a finance ministry scheme, not an MSME one.

Trap

Mudra lends to small businesses but is run by the Finance Ministry (Financial Services), not MSME.

Consider the following and arrange them in correct chronological order.

  • 1. Jawahar Rojgar Yojana
  • 2. Development of women and children in Rural Areas
  • 3. Integrated Rural Development Programme
  • 4. National Rural Employment Programme

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (d) & explanation

Option (d), 3, 4, 2, 1, is correct. The Integrated Rural Development Programme was started in 1978-79 and extended across the country on 2 October 1980, to give the rural poor assets through subsidy and credit. The National Rural Employment Programme also began in 1980, replacing the Food for Work Programme. Development of Women and Children in Rural Areas (DWCRA) began in 1982 as a sub-scheme of IRDP for women's groups. Jawahar Rozgar Yojana came in April 1989, merging NREP and RLEGP. Options (a), (b) and (c) misorder them. Concept: IRDP and its sub-schemes merged into Swarnjayanti Gram Swarozgar Yojana (1999), then NRLM, or Aajeevika (2011). MGNREGA came in 2005-06. Trap: IRDP is placed just before NREP.

Trap

DWCRA (1982) came before Jawahar Rozgar Yojana (1989).

UPPCS Prelims 2025 · GS Paper I

Given below are two statements, one is labelled as Assertion (A) and the other as Reason (R).

Assertion (A): Food security is necessary even in surplus food production years.

Reason (R): Starvation can still occur due to unequal distribution and lack of accessibility.

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (d) & explanation

Option (d), both true and R explains A, is correct. Food security means that all people at all times have enough nutritious food, which needs availability, access and absorption. Even in years of surplus production, people can starve if food is unequally distributed, if they lack income to buy it, or if markets and transport fail. That is why food security matters even in surplus years. Amartya Sen's study of the 1943 Bengal famine showed that starvation can result from failure of entitlements, not just shortage of food. Concept: India runs the Public Distribution System, the National Food Security Act 2013 (free grain under PM Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana since 2023), the PM POSHAN mid-day meal and ICDS. Buffer stocks are held by the FCI. Trap: R gives the reason for A.

Trap

Starvation comes from lack of access, so R explains A.

With reference to 'Human Development Index', which of the following statements is/are correct?

  • 1. The UNDP published its first Human Development Report in 1990, which had a Human Development Index.
  • 2. The first team that developed the Human Development Index was led by Mahbub-ul-Haq and S. Priesner.

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (d) & explanation

Option (d), only 1, is correct. UNDP published its first Human Development Report in 1990, which introduced the Human Development Index (statement 1). Statement 2 is wrong: the HDI was developed by a team led by Pakistani economist Mahbub ul Haq, with Amartya Sen as a key contributor. 'S. Priesner' is a distractor, not a co-founder of the index. Concept: the HDI combines three dimensions: a long and healthy life (life expectancy), knowledge (expected and mean years of schooling) and a decent standard of living (GNI per capita at PPP), using a geometric mean since 2010. Other UNDP indices include the Gender Inequality Index, the Multidimensional Poverty Index and the inequality-adjusted HDI. India ranked 130 of 193 in HDR 2025. Trap: Sen, not Priesner, worked with Mahbub ul Haq.

Trap

HDI was led by Mahbub ul Haq with Amartya Sen.

Which of the following is/are NOT a dimension of food security?

  • 1. Availability
  • 2. Accessibility
  • 3. Affordability
  • 4. Accountability

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (c) & explanation

Option (c), only 4, is correct. Food security is usually described through availability (enough food produced, imported and stored), accessibility (food within reach of everyone, physically and economically) and affordability (enough money to buy safe and nutritious food). These are the three dimensions in the NCERT Class IX textbook. Accountability (4) is a governance principle, not a dimension of food security, so options (a), (b) and (d) are wrong. Concept: the FAO definition from the 1996 World Food Summit uses four pillars, availability, access, utilisation and stability. Absorption, or utilisation, means the body can use the food, which depends on health and sanitation. India's food security rests on buffer stocks and the PDS. Trap: affordability is part of access, so it is a dimension.

Trap

Availability, access and absorption are the dimensions; accountability only sounds like one.

Given below are two statements, one is labelled as Assertion (A) and the other as Reason (R).

Assertion (A): Investment in human capital yields returns in the future.

Reason (R): Education and health make people more productive.

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (d) & explanation

Option (d), both true and R explains A, is correct. Human capital is the stock of skill, knowledge and health in people. Spending on education, training and health is an investment because it raises future productivity and earnings for the individual and for the economy. R explains A, because education and health make people more productive, and that productivity is the future return. Concept: from the NCERT Class IX chapter People as Resource, physical capital needs human capital to work. Japan is a classic example of growth driven by human capital despite few natural resources. Schemes such as Skill India, Samagra Shiksha, Ayushman Bharat and POSHAN Abhiyan build human capital. The World Bank publishes a Human Capital Index. Trap: R explains A, so (a) is wrong.

Trap

Productivity is the future return, so R explains A.

Which of the following pairs is/are correctly matched?

(Railway Zone – Headquarter)

  • 1. Northern Railway – New Delhi
  • 2. North Eastern Railway – Gorakhpur
  • 3. South Eastern Railway – Cuttack

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (a) & explanation

Option (a), only 1 and 2, is correct. Northern Railway has its headquarters at Baroda House, New Delhi. North Eastern Railway has its headquarters at Gorakhpur, which also has one of the world's longest railway platforms. Pair 3 is wrong: South Eastern Railway is headquartered at Garden Reach, Kolkata, not Cuttack, so options (b), (c) and (d) are wrong. Concept: East Coast Railway is at Bhubaneswar, Northeast Frontier at Maligaon (Guwahati), North Central at Prayagraj and East Central at Hajipur. The South Coast Railway zone, with headquarters at Visakhapatnam, was announced in 2019 and is being set up. Trap: Cuttack sounds right for an eastern zone, but Odisha's zone is in Bhubaneswar.

Trap

South Eastern Railway is at Garden Reach, Kolkata, not Bhubaneswar.

Consider the following Committees relating to poverty and arrange their formation in correct chronological order.

  • 1. Lakdawala Committee
  • 2. Rangarajan Committee
  • 3. Tendulkar Committee
  • 4. Dandekar and Rath Committee

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (d) & explanation

Option (d), 4, 1, 3, 2, is correct. V.M. Dandekar and N. Rath published their study of poverty in India in 1971, setting a calorie-based poverty line of 2,250 calories per day. The Lakdawala Expert Group (1989, report 1993) introduced state-specific poverty lines. The Tendulkar Committee (set up 2005, report 2009) used a broader basket including health and education and estimated poverty at 21.9% in 2011-12. The Rangarajan Committee (set up 2012, report 2014) put it at 29.5%. Options (a), (b) and (c) misorder them. Concept: earlier, the Alagh Task Force (1979) set calorie norms of 2,400 (rural) and 2,100 (urban). Today, NITI Aayog uses the multidimensional poverty index. Trap: Tendulkar came before Rangarajan.

Trap

Tendulkar (2009) came before Rangarajan (2014).

Global Wage Report 2024-25 was released by which of the following organisation?

  • 1. International Labour Organisation
  • 2. World Bank
  • 3. International Bank for Reconstruction and Development

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (d) & explanation

Option (d), only 1, is correct. The Global Wage Report is a flagship publication of the International Labour Organization, which is based in Geneva. The 2024-25 edition, released in November 2024, found that real wages grew again worldwide but that wage inequality remained high, though it had fallen in many countries since 2000. The World Bank (2) and the IBRD (3), which is part of the World Bank Group, do not publish it, so options (a), (b) and (c) are wrong. Concept: other ILO reports include the World Employment and Social Outlook and the World Social Protection Report. The World Bank publishes the World Development Report and B-READY. The ILO, founded in 1919, is the only tripartite UN agency, bringing together governments, employers and workers. Trap: wages = ILO.

Trap

The Global Wage Report is the ILO's, not the World Bank's.

Consider the following and arrange them in correct chronological order.

  • 1. Food for work programme
  • 2. Community Development Programme
  • 3. Training for Rural Youth for Self Employment (TRYSEM)
  • 4. Drought Prone Area Programme

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (c) & explanation

Option (c), 2, 4, 1, 3, is correct. The Community Development Programme began on 2 October 1952 to improve rural life through block-level development. The Drought Prone Areas Programme started in 1973-74, after the Rural Works Programme, to reduce the effects of drought through watershed work. The Food for Work Programme was launched in 1977, paying wages in food grains. TRYSEM (Training of Rural Youth for Self-Employment) began on 15 August 1979 to train rural youth aged 18-35. Options (a), (b) and (d) misorder them. Concept: the failure of the CDP led to the Balwant Rai Mehta Committee (1957). TRYSEM later merged into SGSY (1999), and the Desert Development Programme began in 1977-78. Trap: Food for Work came before TRYSEM.

Trap

Food for Work (1977) came before TRYSEM (1979).

Match List-I with List-II and choose the correct answer using the code given below the lists.

List-I (Finance Commission): A. Eleventh B. Twelfth C. Thirteenth D. Fourteenth

List-II (Chairman): 1. Dr. C. Rangarajan 2. Dr. Y. V. Reddy 3. Prof. A. M. Khusro 4. Dr. Vijay L. Kelkar

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (a) & explanation

Option (a), A-3, B-1, C-4, D-2, is correct. The 11th Finance Commission (2000-05) was chaired by Prof. A.M. Khusro. The 12th (2005-10) was chaired by Dr C. Rangarajan. The 13th (2010-15) was chaired by Dr Vijay Kelkar. The 14th (2015-20) was chaired by Dr Y.V. Reddy, and it raised the States' share of central taxes from 32% to 42%. Options (b), (c) and (d) swap these. Concept: the 15th Finance Commission (2020-26), under N.K. Singh, set the share at 41%, and the 16th, under Arvind Panagariya, kept it at 41% for 2026-31. The first Finance Commission (1952) was chaired by K.C. Neogy. The Commission is set up under Article 280 every five years. Trap: Reddy chaired the 14th, which made the big jump to 42%.

Trap

The 12th was Rangarajan and the 14th Y.V. Reddy; Kelkar was the 13th.

With reference to 'Multi-Dimensional Poverty Index', which of the following statements is/are correct?

  • 1. It was developed and introduced in 2010.
  • 2. It measures extreme poverty and includes those living on less than one dollar per day.

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (d) & explanation

Option (d), only 1, is correct. The global Multidimensional Poverty Index was developed by the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI) and UNDP and introduced in the 2010 Human Development Report (statement 1). Statement 2 is wrong: the MPI does not use income. It measures overlapping deprivations in health, education and living standards through 10 indicators, such as nutrition, child mortality, years of schooling, cooking fuel, sanitation and assets. A person deprived in a third or more of the weighted indicators is multidimensionally poor. The one-dollar-a-day line is the World Bank's income-based measure. Concept: India's national MPI by NITI Aayog uses 12 indicators, adding maternal health and bank accounts. Trap: MPI and the dollar-a-day line are different methods.

Trap

MPI measures deprivations, not dollar-a-day income.

Who among the following introduced the concept of entitlements in food security?

  • 1. M. S. Swaminathan
  • 2. Atul Pranay
  • 3. Samali Srikant
  • 4. Amartya Sen

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (c) & explanation

Option (c), only 4, is correct. The entitlement approach to famine and food security was introduced by Amartya Sen in his book Poverty and Famines: An Essay on Entitlement and Deprivation (1981). He argued that famines, such as the Bengal famine of 1943, happen not just because food is short but because some groups lose their entitlement, meaning their ability to command food through production, trade, work or transfers. M.S. Swaminathan (1), the father of the Green Revolution, is linked to food production, not this concept. Atul Pranay and Samali Srikant are distractors, so options (a), (b) and (d) are wrong. Concept: Sen won the 1998 Nobel in economics. He also developed the capability approach behind the HDI. Trap: Swaminathan is a food security name but not the entitlements one.

Trap

M.S. Swaminathan is linked to food security, but entitlements are Amartya Sen's.

With reference to World Bank and International Monetary Fund, which of the following statements is/are correct?

  • 1. The World Bank and International Monetary Fund were set up together and are popularly known as Bretton Wood Twins.
  • 2. Headquarters of International Monetary Fund and World Bank are located at Washington D.C. and New York respectively.

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (d) & explanation

Option (d), only 1, is correct. The World Bank (formally the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development) and the International Monetary Fund were created together at the Bretton Woods Conference in New Hampshire, USA, in July 1944, and are called the Bretton Woods twins (statement 1). Statement 2 is wrong: both have their headquarters in Washington, DC, not New York. The United Nations headquarters is in New York, which is the source of the confusion. Concept: by convention, the IMF is headed by a European (Kristalina Georgieva, in her second term since October 2024) and the World Bank by an American (Ajay Banga, since 2023). India was a founding member of both. The IMF manages SDRs, and the World Bank funds development. Trap: New York is the UN, not the World Bank.

Trap

Both twins are headquartered in Washington DC; the World Bank is not in New York.

Given below are two statements, one is labelled as Assertion (A) and the other as Reason (R).

Assertion (A): Consumers can bargain below Maximum Retail Price (MRP).

Reason (R): MRP is a price a seller must charge from the buyer.

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (b) & explanation

Option (b), A true and R false, is correct. Maximum Retail Price is the highest price at which a packaged product can be sold, including all taxes. It is a ceiling, not a fixed price, so a seller can sell below it and a buyer can bargain for a lower price. So A is true. R is false because the seller is not required to charge exactly the MRP; the seller only must not charge more. Concept: MRP labelling is required under the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011. Charging more than MRP is an unfair trade practice under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, and complaints can be made to the National Consumer Helpline (1915) or consumer commissions. National Consumer Day is 24 December. Trap: MRP is a maximum, not a mandated price.

Trap

MRP is a ceiling, not a fixed price, so bargaining below it is allowed.

The Global Financial Stability Report is released by which among the following?

  • 1. International Monetary Fund
  • 2. World Economic Forum
  • 3. World Bank

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (d) & explanation

Option (d), only 1, is correct. The Global Financial Stability Report is published twice a year, in April and October, by the International Monetary Fund. It assesses risks to the world financial system, such as asset prices, bank stress and non-bank finance. The World Economic Forum (2) and the World Bank (3) do not publish it, so options (a), (b) and (c) are wrong. Concept: the IMF's other flagship reports are the World Economic Outlook and the Fiscal Monitor. The World Bank publishes the Global Economic Prospects and the World Development Report. The WEF publishes the Global Gender Gap Report, the Global Risks Report and the Travel and Tourism Development Index. The RBI's own Financial Stability Report comes out twice a year. Trap: financial stability = IMF.

With reference to Global Environment Facility, which of the following statements is/are correct?

  • 1. It was established in 1991.
  • 2. Only the developed countries are donors to it.

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (d) & explanation

Option (d), only 1, is correct. The Global Environment Facility was set up in 1991 as a World Bank pilot before the 1992 Rio Earth Summit, and was restructured in 1994 (statement 1). Statement 2 is wrong: donors include several developing countries, India and China among them, along with developed nations. India is both a donor and a recipient. Concept: the GEF is the financial mechanism for five conventions, namely the CBD, UNFCCC, UNCCD, Stockholm (POPs) and Minamata (mercury). It is run with agencies such as UNDP, UNEP and the World Bank, which acts as trustee. It also manages the Least Developed Countries Fund and the Special Climate Change Fund. Trap: 'only developed countries' is the absolute word that makes statement 2 wrong.

List-I (National Park/Wildlife Sanctuary): A. Dachingam B. Keoladeo C. Kanha D. Periyar

List-II (State/Union Territory): 1. Madhya Pradesh 2. Rajasthan 3. Kerala 4. Jammu and Kashmir

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (d) & explanation

Option (d), A-4, B-2, C-1, D-3, is correct. Dachigam National Park lies near Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir and is the last major home of the hangul, the Kashmir stag. Keoladeo National Park at Bharatpur, Rajasthan, is a UNESCO World Heritage wetland once famous for the Siberian crane. Kanha in Madhya Pradesh is a tiger reserve known for the hard-ground barasingha, the state animal. Periyar in Kerala is a tiger reserve around a reservoir in the Western Ghats. Options (a), (b) and (c) swap these. Concept: Keoladeo is also a Ramsar site, and Kanha is said to have inspired Kipling's The Jungle Book. Trap: Dachigam, not Dudhwa, is the hangul habitat.

With reference to Lifestyle for the Environment (LiFE), which of the following statements is/are correct?

  • 1. It was launched in June 2022.
  • 2. Its idea was proposed at the COP 25 in Madrid, Spain.

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (d) & explanation

Option (d), only 1, is correct. Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment) was launched globally on 5 June 2022, World Environment Day, with a 'LiFE Global Call for Papers'. Its India launch with the UN Secretary-General came at Kevadia, Gujarat, in October 2022. Statement 2 is wrong: Prime Minister Modi proposed the idea at COP26 in Glasgow in November 2021, not at COP25 in Madrid (2019). Concept: LiFE promotes mindful use instead of wasteful consumption, through Pro-Planet People. It encourages actions such as saving water and energy, cutting single-use plastic and eating millets. The Green Credit Programme (2023) and Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam (2024) are related campaigns. Trap: Glasgow COP26 is also where India announced Panchamrit and net zero by 2070.

Trap

LiFE was proposed at COP26, Glasgow, not COP25.

With reference to 'Operation Olivia', which of the following statements is/are correct?

  • 1. It is an initiative of Indian coast Guards to protect Olive Ridley turtles along the coast of Odisha.
  • 2. Operation Olivia is carried out during the month of August which is the nesting time of Olive Ridley turtles.

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (d) & explanation

Option (d), only 1, is correct. Operation Olivia is run every year by the Indian Coast Guard to protect Olive Ridley sea turtles along the Odisha coast (statement 1). It covers Gahirmatha, Rushikulya and the Devi river mouth, where the turtles come ashore in large numbers for mass nesting, called arribada. Statement 2 is wrong: the operation runs roughly from November to May, the nesting season, not August. Concept: Olive Ridleys are listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List and are protected under Schedule I of the Wildlife (Protection) Act. Main threats are trawler fishing nets, which is why Turtle Excluder Devices are promoted. Gahirmatha Marine Sanctuary is among the world's largest Olive Ridley rookeries. Trap: August is the wrong month.

Trap

Operation Olivia runs November to May, not August.

With reference to lichens, which of the following statements is/are correct?

  • 1. Lichens are very good indicators of pollution.
  • 2. Lichens grow well in polluted areas.

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (d) & explanation

Option (d), only 1, is correct. Lichens are a symbiotic partnership between a fungus and an alga or cyanobacterium. They absorb water and nutrients directly from air and rain, so they take in pollutants too. They are very sensitive to sulphur dioxide, which makes them good indicators of air pollution (statement 1). Statement 2 is wrong: lichens decline or disappear in polluted areas instead of growing well, and areas without lichens near industrial cities are called lichen deserts. Concept: lichens are pioneer species in primary succession on bare rock, and they help form soil. Usnea and Parmelia are examples. Other indicators include mosses for acid rain and E. coli in water for faecal contamination. Trap: indicators show pollution by disappearing.

Trap

Lichens disappear in polluted air, they do not flourish.

With reference to 'ozone layer', which of the following statements is/are correct?

  • 1. Ozone layer shields the surface of the earth from the ultra-violet radiations from the sun.
  • 2. Ozone depletion has been linked to the chlorofluorocarbons.

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (b) & explanation

Option (b), both 1 and 2, is correct. The ozone layer in the stratosphere, about 15-35 km up, absorbs most of the sun's harmful ultraviolet radiation, especially UV-B, shielding life from skin cancer, cataracts and crop damage (statement 1). Its thinning, including the Antarctic ozone hole, has been traced to chlorofluorocarbons and other ozone-depleting substances such as halons and carbon tetrachloride (statement 2). UV light breaks CFCs and releases chlorine, which destroys ozone. Concept: the Vienna Convention (1985) and the Montreal Protocol (1987) phased out CFCs. The Kigali Amendment (2016) phases down HFCs, which do not harm ozone but warm the planet. Ozone is measured in Dobson units. Trap: ground-level ozone is a pollutant, while stratospheric ozone protects us.

Trap

Stratospheric ozone absorbs UV-B; CFCs deplete it.

With reference to Mangrove Initiative for Shoreline Habitats and Tangible Income (MISHTI), which of the following statements is/are correct?

  • 1. It was initiated in 2019.
  • 2. It aims to restore Mangrove forests.

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (a) & explanation

Option (a), only 2, is correct. MISHTI (Mangrove Initiative for Shoreline Habitats and Tangible Incomes) was announced in the Union Budget 2023-24 and launched on 5 June 2023, World Environment Day. So statement 1, which says 2019, is wrong. Statement 2 is right: it aims to restore and plant mangroves over about 540 sq km across nine States and four UTs, through convergence with MGNREGS, CAMPA funds and other sources. Concept: India's mangrove cover is about 4,990 sq km. The Sundarbans in West Bengal is the largest, followed by Gujarat and the Andamans. India joined the Mangrove Alliance for Climate (MAC), launched at COP27 in 2022. The Amrit Dharohar scheme (2023) promotes wetlands. Trap: 2019 is wrong, as MISHTI is from 2023.

Trap

MISHTI was launched in 2023, not 2019.

With reference to 'Ecosystem', which of the following statements is/are correct?

  • 1. Green plants in terrestrial ecosystem capture about 1% of energy of the sunlight that falls on their leaves.
  • 2. Around 10% of organic matter reaches to the next higher level of consumers.

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (b) & explanation

Option (b), both 1 and 2, is correct per the key. Green plants capture only about 1-2% of the sunlight that falls on their leaves and store it as chemical energy through photosynthesis (statement 1). This is the figure given in the NCERT Class XII ecology chapter. At each step of a food chain, only about 10% of the energy, carried in organic matter, passes to the next trophic level. The rest is lost as heat in respiration. This is Lindeman's ten per cent law (1942) (statement 2). Concept: this is why food chains usually have only 4-5 levels and why the pyramid of energy is always upright. Pyramids of biomass can be inverted in the sea. Note: statement 2 says organic matter, though the law is about energy, so the key reads them as the same.

Trap

Plants fix about 1% of sunlight; 10% passes up each level.

The Appiko Movement is associated with which of the following Indian States?

  • 1. Uttarakhand
  • 2. Uttar Pradesh
  • 3. Kerala
  • 4. Karnataka

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (c) & explanation

Option (c), only 4, is correct. The Appiko movement began in September 1983 in the Uttara Kannada (Sirsi) region of Karnataka, led by Panduranga Hegde. Villagers hugged trees to stop felling in the Western Ghats, and 'appiko' means 'to hug' in Kannada. It was inspired by the Chipko movement of the Garhwal Himalaya (Uttarakhand, then part of UP), which is why Uttarakhand (1) and Uttar Pradesh (2) are tempting. Kerala (3) is linked to the Silent Valley movement. So options (a), (b) and (d) are wrong. Concept: the movement had three aims: protect existing forests, regrow degraded land and use forest resources rationally. Other movements include Narmada Bachao, Jungle Bachao (Jharkhand) and the Bishnois of Khejarli (Rajasthan, 1730). Trap: Appiko is the southern Chipko.

Trap

Appiko means 'hug' in Kannada: Karnataka's Chipko, not Uttarakhand's.

Given below are two statements, one is labelled as Assertion (A) and the other as Reason (R).

Assertion (A): Sustainable development should take place without damaging the environment and development in the present time should not compromise with the needs of the future generations.

Reason (R): Agenda 21 was signed by world leaders in 1995.

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (b) & explanation

Option (b), A true and R false, is correct. A gives the classic definition of sustainable development from the Brundtland Report, Our Common Future (1987): development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. So A is true. R is false: Agenda 21, a non-binding action plan for sustainable development in the 21st century, was adopted at the UN Conference on Environment and Development, the Rio Earth Summit, in June 1992, not in 1995. Concept: Rio 1992 also produced the UNFCCC, the CBD, the Rio Declaration and the Forest Principles, and led to the UNCCD in 1994. Rio+20 (2012) launched the process that became the SDGs. Trap: 1992, not 1995.

Trap

Agenda 21 was adopted at Rio in 1992, so R is false.

Which of the following prepared the Annual Groundwater Quality Report 2024?

  • 1. Central Pollution Control Board
  • 2. Central Water Commission
  • 3. Central Groundwater Board

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (c) & explanation

Option (c), only 3, is correct. The Annual Groundwater Quality Report 2024 was released by the Central Ground Water Board (CGWB) under the Ministry of Jal Shakti, based on samples from wells across the country. It found nitrate above safe limits in about 20% of samples, especially in Rajasthan, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, along with fluoride, arsenic and uranium problems in some areas. The Central Pollution Control Board (1) monitors pollution generally, and the Central Water Commission (2) deals with surface water, so options (a), (b) and (d) are wrong. Concept: the CGWB also prepares the Dynamic Groundwater Resource Assessment with the States. Atal Bhujal Yojana (2019) promotes community groundwater management in seven States. Trap: groundwater reports come from CGWB, not CWC.

Trap

The CPCB tests surface pollution; the groundwater report is by the Central Ground Water Board.

With reference to 'Carrying Capacity of Environment', which of the following statements is/are correct?

  • 1. The rate of resource extraction should remain above the rate of resource generation.
  • 2. Generation of waste should remain within the absorption capacity of environment.

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (a) & explanation

Option (a), only 2, is correct. Statement 1 is wrong because it reverses the rule. To stay within carrying capacity, the rate at which resources are extracted must stay below the rate at which they regenerate, not above it. Otherwise resources run out, as with overfishing or falling groundwater. Statement 2 is right: waste generated must stay within the environment's capacity to absorb it, or pollution follows. Concept: these two conditions come from the NCERT Class XI economics chapter on sustainable development. Carrying capacity is the largest population an environment can support without degrading. Earth Overshoot Day marks the date when humanity's demand exceeds what the planet can renew in a year; it fell in late July in 2025. Trap: 'above' should be 'below'.

Trap

Sustainable use needs extraction below regeneration, not above it.

Which of the following pairs is/are NOT correctly matched?

(Biosphere Reserve – State)

  • 1. Nokrek – Manipur
  • 2. Manas – Assam
  • 3. Agasthyamalai – Kerala

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (d) & explanation

Option (d), only 1, is correct. Pair 1 is wrong: Nokrek Biosphere Reserve is in the Garo Hills of Meghalaya, not Manipur. Nokrek is the highest peak of the Garo Hills and known for wild citrus, including the memang narang. The other pairs are correct: Manas in Assam is a biosphere reserve, tiger reserve and World Heritage Site on the Bhutan border. Agasthyamalai lies in Kerala and Tamil Nadu, and the key accepts Kerala. Concept: India has 18 biosphere reserves, of which 13 are in UNESCO's World Network, including Nilgiri (the first, 1986), Sundarbans, Gulf of Mannar, Nanda Devi, Nokrek, Pachmarhi, Similipal, Great Nicobar, Achanakmar-Amarkantak, Agasthyamalai, Khangchendzonga, Panna and Cold Desert. Trap: Nokrek is Meghalaya.

With reference to 'Delhi Government's Bio-decomposer and Spray Programme', which of the following statements is/are correct?

  • 1. The Bio-decomposer solution is provided free of cost to farmers to help convert stubble into manure.
  • 2. The Bio-decomposer solution is prepared using a mix of several fungi.

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (b) & explanation

Option (b), both 1 and 2, is correct. Under its bio-decomposer programme, the Delhi government sprayed the PUSA bio-decomposer solution free of cost on farmers' fields, so paddy stubble would rot into manure in a few weeks instead of being burnt (statement 1). The solution, developed by the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI, Pusa), is made from a mix of several fungi that break down cellulose and lignin (statement 2). Concept: stubble burning in Punjab, Haryana and western UP adds to Delhi's winter smog. Other measures include the Happy Seeder, in-situ crop residue management subsidies, ex-situ use in biomass power and CBG plants, and the Commission for Air Quality Management (2021). The Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) acts by AQI levels. Trap: the decomposer is fungal, not bacterial.

Trap

The PUSA decomposer is a mix of fungi.

Which of the following pairs is/are correctly matched?

(Coal Producing Area – State)

  • 1. Maolong – Arunachal Pradesh
  • 2. Raniganj – West Bengal
  • 3. Ramgarh – Jharkhand
  • 4. Talcher – Odisha

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (c) & explanation

Option (c), only 2, 3 and 4, is correct. Raniganj in West Bengal is India's oldest coalfield, where mining began in 1774. Ramgarh is a Damodar valley coalfield in Jharkhand. Talcher in Odisha holds some of India's largest coal reserves and feeds the Talcher thermal and fertiliser plants. Pair 1 is wrong: Maolong is a coal area of Meghalaya, not Arunachal Pradesh, which rules out options (a), (b) and (d). Concept: India's coal is mostly Gondwana coal (about 98%), found in the Damodar, Mahanadi, Godavari and Son valleys. Tertiary coal occurs in the North-East: Meghalaya, Assam (Makum) and Arunachal (Namchik-Namphuk). Jharkhand, Odisha and Chhattisgarh lead in coal reserves. Trap: Maolong sounds like an Arunachal place name.

Trap

Maolong sounds like an Arunachal name, but it is a coal area of Meghalaya.

With reference to 'Atal Tunnel' which of the following statements is/are correct?

  • 1. This tunnel is the world's longest highway tunnel.
  • 2. This tunnel is built in the Pir Panjal range of Himalayas.

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (a) & explanation

Option (a), only 2, is correct. The Atal Tunnel, 9.02 km long, runs beneath the Rohtang Pass and links Manali to Lahaul-Spiti. It was opened in October 2020. It is the world's longest highway tunnel above 10,000 feet, and the qualifier matters: Norway's Laerdal tunnel (24.5 km) is far longer overall, so statement 1 is wrong. Statement 2 is right because the tunnel cuts through the Pir Panjal range. Concept: it was built by the Border Roads Organisation and cuts the Manali-Leh distance by about 46 km. Other Himalayan tunnels include Chenani-Nashri (Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee tunnel), Sela Tunnel in Arunachal (2024) and Z-Morh (Sonamarg, 2025). Trap: 'world's longest' without 'above 10,000 ft' makes statement 1 false.

Trap

Atal Tunnel is longest only above 10,000 feet; without that qualifier the claim is false.

Which of the following pairs is/are NOT correctly matched?

(Tribe – Habitat)

  • 1. Bushman – Kalahari Desert
  • 2. Eskimo – Northern Canada
  • 3. Pygmy – Congo Basin
  • 4. Masai – West Africa

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (c) & explanation

Option (c), only 4, is correct. Pair 4 is wrong because the Masai (Maasai) are semi-nomadic cattle herders of East Africa, in Kenya and Tanzania, around the Rift Valley and the Serengeti. They are not from West Africa. The other pairs are correct: the Bushmen (San) are hunter-gatherers of the Kalahari Desert. The Eskimos (Inuit) live in Arctic northern Canada, Alaska and Greenland, using igloos and kayaks. The Pygmies live in the Congo Basin rainforests. Concept: other groups often tested are the Bedouin (Arabian desert), Kirghiz (Central Asian steppes), Tuareg (Sahara), Semang (Malaysia), Lapps or Sami (Scandinavia) and Yakuts (Siberia). Trap: Masai = East Africa, not West.

Trap

Which of the following rivers fall into the Arabian Sea?

  • 1. Periyar
  • 2. Pennar
  • 3. Palar

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (a) & explanation

Option (a), only 1, is correct. The Periyar, Kerala's longest river, rises in the Western Ghats and flows west into the Arabian Sea near Kochi. The Idukki arch dam and the Mullaperiyar dam stand on it. The Pennar (Penna) rises in Karnataka and flows east through Andhra Pradesh to the Bay of Bengal. The Palar also rises in Karnataka and flows east through Tamil Nadu to the Bay of Bengal. So options (b), (c) and (d) are wrong. Concept: major west-flowing rivers are the Narmada and Tapi (rift valleys), Sabarmati, Mahi, Mandovi, Zuari, Sharavati (Jog Falls), Netravati and Bharathapuzha. Most peninsular rivers flow east because the plateau tilts eastward. Trap: Pennar and Palar sound southern but flow east.

Trap

The Pennar and Palar flow east to the Bay of Bengal; only the Periyar flows west.

With reference to hydroelectricity in North India, which of the following statements is/are correct?

  • 1. There are huge possibilities of hydroelectricity in the Himalayan region.
  • 2. Eastern Uttar Pradesh and Bihar cannot utilise this potential because the Himalayas situated to their North lies in boundary of Nepal.

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (b) & explanation

Option (b), both 1 and 2, is the official key. Statement 1 is clearly right: the Himalaya has India's largest hydropower potential because of steep slopes and snow-fed perennial rivers. Statement 2 is accepted because the plains of eastern UP and Bihar lie south of Nepal, and the best dam sites on the Kosi, Gandak, Ghaghara (Karnali) and Sharda (Mahakali) are inside Nepal, so these States cannot tap the potential on their own. They depend on India-Nepal projects such as Pancheshwar, Kosi and Gandak. Concept: UP and Bihar do buy hydropower through the grid. Note: statement 2 is reasoning from a textbook rather than strict fact, so 'cannot utilise' is debatable and (d) is arguable; check the final key.

Trap

Statement 2 is textbook reasoning; key accepts both.

Arrange the following States of India in the ascending order on the basis of their area and select the correct answer from the code given below.

  • 1. Haryana
  • 2. Himachal Pradesh
  • 3. Punjab
  • 4. Uttarakhand

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (d) & explanation

Option (d), 1, 3, 4, 2, is correct. By area, Haryana is about 44,212 sq km, Punjab about 50,362 sq km, Uttarakhand about 53,483 sq km and Himachal Pradesh about 55,673 sq km. So the ascending order is Haryana, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh. Options (a), (b) and (c) misplace the close figures of Punjab, Uttarakhand and Himachal. Concept: Rajasthan is the largest State (about 3.42 lakh sq km), followed by Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra, while Goa is the smallest. Uttar Pradesh is fourth by area but first by population. Among UTs, Ladakh is the largest. Trap: Uttarakhand and Himachal look alike as hill States, but Himachal is slightly bigger, and Punjab is bigger than Haryana.

Suez canal connects which of the following?

  • 1. Atlantic Ocean
  • 2. Red Sea
  • 3. Mediterranean Sea
  • 4. Indian Ocean

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (b) & explanation

Option (b), 2 and 3, is correct. The Suez Canal, about 193 km long and with no locks, links the Mediterranean Sea at Port Said with the Red Sea at Suez, through Egypt. It opened in 1869. It does not directly link the Atlantic Ocean (1) or the Indian Ocean (4), though it shortens the route between them via the Red Sea and Bab-el-Mandeb, so options (a), (c) and (d) are wrong. Concept: Egypt's Nasser nationalised the canal in 1956, which led to the Suez Crisis. The Ever Given blocked it in 2021. Houthi attacks in the Red Sea from late 2023 forced ships to go round the Cape of Good Hope. The Panama Canal links the Atlantic and Pacific. Trap: Suez joins seas, not oceans directly.

List-I (State): A. Tamil Nadu B. Rajasthan C. Nagaland D. Madhya Pradesh

List-II (Highest Peak): 1. Dhupgarh 2. Doddabetta 3. Guru Shikhar 4. Saramati

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (d) & explanation

Option (d), A-2, B-3, C-4, D-1, is correct. Doddabetta (2,637 m) in the Nilgiris is the highest peak of Tamil Nadu. Guru Shikhar (1,722 m) at Mount Abu in the Aravallis is the highest in Rajasthan. Saramati (3,841 m), on the Myanmar border, is the highest in Nagaland. Dhupgarh (1,350 m) in the Mahadeo hills near Pachmarhi is the highest in Madhya Pradesh and the Satpura range. Options (a), (b) and (c) swap these. Concept: Anamudi (2,695 m) in Kerala is the highest peak of peninsular India. Other state highs include Kangchenjunga (Sikkim), Mahendragiri (Odisha), Parasnath (Jharkhand), Kalsubai (Maharashtra) and Mullayanagiri (Karnataka). The Gobi Desert is spread across which of the following countries?

  • 1. Mongolia
  • 2. China
  • 3. Russia
  • 4. Kazakhstan

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (a) & explanation

Option (a), only 1 and 2, is correct. The Gobi Desert lies in southern Mongolia and northern China, including Inner Mongolia. It is a cold desert in the rain shadow of the Tibetan plateau and Himalaya, with very cold winters, and much of it is bare rock rather than sand. It does not extend into Russia (3) or Kazakhstan (4), so options (b), (c) and (d) are wrong. Concept: dinosaur eggs were first found at Flaming Cliffs in the Gobi. Other cold deserts include the Taklamakan (China), Patagonia (Argentina) and Ladakh. Kazakhstan has the Kyzylkum, which it shares with Uzbekistan. China's Great Green Wall project aims to stop the Gobi spreading. Trap: neighbouring Russia does not share the Gobi.

Consider the following sources of world water supply and arrange them in descending order.

  • 1. Oceans
  • 2. Rivers
  • 3. Polar ice and Glaciers
  • 4. Ground water

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (a) & explanation

Option (a), 1, 3, 4, 2, is correct. Oceans hold about 97% of Earth's water. Of the remaining 2.5-3% that is fresh, about 68-69% is locked in ice caps and glaciers (mostly Antarctica and Greenland), about 30% is groundwater, and surface water such as lakes and rivers is less than 1%. Rivers hold a tiny fraction. So the descending order is oceans, polar ice and glaciers, groundwater, rivers, and options (b), (c) and (d) are wrong. Concept: lakes hold more water than rivers, and the atmosphere and living things hold even less. India has about 18% of the world's people but only about 4% of its fresh water, which makes groundwater a key source. Trap: groundwater is far larger than rivers.

Trap

Rivers hold very little water: after oceans and ice comes groundwater, and rivers come last.

Match List-I with List-II and choose the correct answer by using the code given below the lists.

List-I (Coal Field): A. Appalachian B. Lancashire C. Ruhr D. Kuzbass

List-II (Country): 1. England 2. Germany 3. Russia 4. United States of America

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (a) & explanation

Option (a), A-4, B-1, C-2, D-3, is correct. The Appalachian coalfield in the eastern United States, covering Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Kentucky, is among the world's richest bituminous coal regions. Lancashire in north-west England fuelled the cotton textile boom of the Industrial Revolution. The Ruhr in Germany became Europe's chief coal and steel area, with cities such as Essen and Dortmund. The Kuzbass (Kuznetsk Basin) in Siberia, Russia, is one of the largest coalfields in the world. Options (b), (c) and (d) swap these. Concept: other major coalfields are the Donbas (Ukraine), Shanxi (China), Silesia (Poland) and the Bowen Basin (Australia). China is the largest coal producer, followed by India. Trap: Kuzbass is Russian, not German.

Trap

Kuzbass is in Russia; Ruhr is Germany.

Given below are two statements, one is labelled as Assertion (A) and the other as Reason (R).

Assertion (A): The interior part of Australia is desert and semi-desert.

Reason (R): Northern Australia is situated in the temperate zone.

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (b) & explanation

Option (b), A true and R false, is correct. Australia's interior, the Outback, is desert and semi-desert, including the Great Victoria, Great Sandy, Gibson and Simpson deserts. It lies in the subtropical high-pressure belt and in the rain shadow of the Great Dividing Range, so it is very dry. So A is true. R is false: northern Australia lies in the tropics, north of the Tropic of Capricorn, and has a hot, tropical monsoon-type climate with wet summers, not a temperate one. Concept: southern Australia, such as Melbourne and Perth, has temperate and Mediterranean climates. Australia is the driest inhabited continent. Uluru (Ayers Rock) lies in the interior. Trap: northern Australia is closer to the equator, so it is tropical.

Trap

Northern Australia is tropical, not temperate, so R is false.

List-I (Refinery): A. Nayara B. Manali C. Numaligarh D. Tatipaka

List-II (State): 1. Assam 2. Gujarat 3. Andhra Pradesh 4. Tamil Nadu

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (c) & explanation

Option (c), A-2, B-4, C-1, D-3, is correct. The Nayara Energy refinery is at Vadinar near Jamnagar, Gujarat; it is India's second-largest single-site refinery and is backed by Rosneft. The Manali refinery of Chennai Petroleum Corporation is in Tamil Nadu. Numaligarh refinery in Assam came out of the Assam Accord (1985), and its capacity is being raised to 9 MMTPA. Tatipaka in Andhra Pradesh is a small ONGC refinery in the Krishna-Godavari basin. Options (a), (b) and (d) swap these. Concept: Reliance's Jamnagar is the world's largest refining complex. Assam has four refineries, Digboi (1901, the oldest), Guwahati, Bongaigaon and Numaligarh. Barmer (Rajasthan) is being built. Trap: Tatipaka is in Andhra, and Manali here is in Tamil Nadu, not Himachal.

Trap

Tatipaka is in Andhra; Manali refinery is in Tamil Nadu.

List-I (Port): A. Paradeep B. Tuticorin C. Kakinada D. Alappuzha

List-II (State): 1. Tamil Nadu 2. Kerala 3. Odisha 4. Andhra Pradesh

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (c) & explanation

Option (c), A-3, B-1, C-4, D-2, is correct. Paradip port in Odisha, at the mouth of the Mahanadi, handles iron ore and coal and is a deep-water port. Tuticorin, renamed V.O. Chidambaranar port, is in Tamil Nadu on the Gulf of Mannar. Kakinada is in Andhra Pradesh, in the Godavari delta, and handles oil and gas from the Krishna-Godavari basin. Alappuzha (Alleppey) is in Kerala and is known for backwaters and coir. Options (a), (b) and (d) swap these. Concept: India has 12 major ports plus the new Vadhavan (Maharashtra, being built). Vizhinjam in Kerala opened in 2025 as India's first deep-water container transshipment port. Paradip and Deendayal (Kandla) top cargo volumes. Trap: Tuticorin is Tamil Nadu, not Kerala.

Trap

Tuticorin = Tamil Nadu; Alappuzha = Kerala.

Match List-I with List-II and choose the correct answer using the code given below the lists.

List-I (Iron-ore Mines): A. Gurumahisani B. Bailadila C. Noamundi D. Kudremukh

List-II (State): 1. Jharkhand 2. Karnataka 3. Odisha 4. Chhattisgarh

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (d) & explanation

Option (d), A-3, B-4, C-1, D-2, is correct. Gurumahisani is an iron ore mine in Mayurbhanj, Odisha, which once fed Tata Steel. Bailadila, in Dantewada, Chhattisgarh, has high-grade haematite worked by NMDC, and much of its ore is exported via Visakhapatnam. Noamundi in West Singhbhum, Jharkhand, is a Tata Steel mine. Kudremukh in Karnataka's Western Ghats was mined by KIOCL until 2005, when mining stopped to protect the national park. Options (a), (b) and (c) swap these. Concept: Odisha is India's top iron ore producer, followed by Chhattisgarh, Karnataka and Jharkhand. Haematite and magnetite are the main ores, and India is among the top five producers in the world. Trap: Noamundi is Jharkhand, not Odisha.

Trap

Noamundi is in Jharkhand; Bailadila is in Chhattisgarh.

Given below are two statements, one is labelled as Assertion (A) and the other as Reason (R).

Assertion (A): In the Himalayan mountains different types of vegetation are found.

Reason (R): In Himalayas, there are variations in climate with change in altitude.

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (d) & explanation

Option (d), both true and R explains A, is correct. The Himalaya rises from about 300 m in the foothills to over 8,000 m, and temperature falls by about 6.5°C for every 1,000 m. This altitudinal change produces belts of vegetation, from tropical moist deciduous forests (sal) in the Terai and Shiwaliks, to subtropical pine, temperate oak and deodar, then alpine forests of fir, spruce and birch, and finally alpine meadows (bugyals) and tundra-like scrub near the snowline. So R explains A. Concept: the eastern Himalaya, being wetter, has denser forests than the west. Aspect matters too: south-facing slopes get more sunlight and rain. Valleys like Spiti and Ladakh are cold deserts. Trap: R gives the cause of A.

Trap

Climate changes with altitude, so R explains A.

With reference to 'Brazil' which of the following statements is/are correct?

  • 1. The equatorial rainforests of Brazil are called 'Selvas'.
  • 2. The dark black colour fertile land here is called 'Terra Roxa'.

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (b) & explanation

Option (b), both 1 and 2, is correct per the key. The dense equatorial rainforests of the Amazon basin in Brazil are called selvas (statement 1). The fertile soil of the Brazilian plateau, formed from weathered basalt and ideal for coffee, is called terra roxa (statement 2). Note: terra roxa literally means purple or red earth and is usually described as dark reddish-purple, so 'dark black' is loose, and the key accepts it. Concept: Brazil is the world's largest coffee producer, with plantations called fazendas in São Paulo and Minas Gerais. The Amazon is the world's largest river by volume. COP30 was held at Belém, at the mouth of the Amazon, in November 2025. Other grasslands of South America are the llanos, campos and pampas.

Trap

Terra roxa is really dark reddish-purple, not black.

Given below are two statements, one is labelled as Assertion (A) and the other as Reason (R).

Assertion (A): The Himalayas form source of several large perennial rivers.

Reason (R): The higher ranges of Himalayas are snow covered throughout the year.

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (d) & explanation

Option (d), both true and R explains A, is correct. The higher Himalaya carries permanent snowfields and glaciers, such as Gangotri, Yamunotri, Siachen and Zemu. Their meltwater keeps the Indus, Ganga and Brahmaputra and their tributaries flowing all year, even in the dry season, while the monsoon adds more water in summer. So R explains A. Concept: peninsular rivers depend only on rain, so many are seasonal. The Himalaya and Tibet are called the Third Pole or the water tower of Asia, with the largest store of ice outside the polar regions. Glacier retreat from warming threatens these rivers in the long run, and glacial lake outbursts caused floods in Sikkim (South Lhonak, 2023). Trap: R directly explains A.

Trap

Permanent snow feeds rivers, so R explains A.

With reference to the 'Indian Ocean', which of the following statements is/are correct?

  • 1. It was called by the Ancient Greeks as Erythraean Sea.
  • 2. It is spread on the either side of equator.

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (b) & explanation

Option (b), both 1 and 2, is correct. Ancient Greek geographers called the Indian Ocean, together with the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf, the Erythraean Sea, meaning the Red Sea. The Periplus of the Erythraean Sea, a 1st-century CE Greek guide, describes trade between Roman Egypt and Indian ports like Barygaza (Bharuch) and Muziris (statement 1). The Indian Ocean spreads across both sides of the equator, though most of it lies in the Southern Hemisphere (statement 2). Concept: it is the third-largest ocean and the only one named after a country. It is bounded on the north by Asia, so it has no Arctic link. Its monsoon wind reversal shaped ancient trade, and Hippalus is credited with explaining it to the Greeks. Trap: Erythraean is the Greek name, not the Roman one.

Trap

Greeks called the Indian Ocean the Erythraean Sea.

Which of the following is/are NOT a cold ocean current?

  • 1. Agulhas current
  • 2. Brazil current
  • 3. Humboldt current
  • 4. California current

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (d) & explanation

Option (d), 1 and 2, is correct. The Agulhas current flows south along Africa's east coast and is warm, and the Brazil current flows south along South America's east coast and is also warm. So these two are not cold currents. The Humboldt (Peru) current flows north along the west coast of South America, and the California current flows south along the west coast of North America. Both are cold. So options (a), (b) and (c) are wrong. Concept: as a rule, currents on the western sides of continents in low latitudes are cold, and those on the eastern sides are warm. Cold currents help form coastal deserts, such as the Atacama (Humboldt), Namib (Benguela) and Sonoran-Mojave (California). The Humboldt also supports rich fisheries, which fail in El Niño years. Trap: the Brazil current is warm.

Trap

Agulhas and Brazil are warm; Humboldt and California are cold.

Which of the following pairs is/are NOT correctly matched?

(Pass – State/Union Territory)

  • 1. Lipulekh – Ladakh
  • 2. Nathu La – Sikkim
  • 3. Bomdila – Arunachal Pradesh
  • 4. Shipki La – Himachal Pradesh

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (d) & explanation

Option (d), only 1, is correct. Pair 1 is wrong: Lipulekh Pass is in Pithoragarh district, Uttarakhand, near the tri-junction of India, Nepal and China, not in Ladakh. It is used for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra and for India-China border trade, though Nepal disputes the area. The other pairs are correct: Nathu La is in Sikkim, on the old Silk Route to Tibet's Chumbi valley. Bomdila is in Arunachal Pradesh, on the road to Tawang. Shipki La is in Kinnaur, Himachal Pradesh, where the Sutlej enters India. Concept: Ladakh's passes include Khardung La, Chang La, Zoji La (which links it to Kashmir) and the Karakoram Pass. India and China agreed in 2025 to resume trade through Lipulekh, Shipki La and Nathu La. Trap: Lipulekh is in Uttarakhand.

Trap

Lipulekh is in Uttarakhand (Pithoragarh), not Ladakh.

Which of the following pairs is/are NOT correctly matched?

(City – River)

  • 1. Budapest – Danube
  • 2. Cologne – Rhine
  • 3. New Orleans – Missouri
  • 4. Hyderabad (India) – Paleru

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (c) & explanation

Option (c), only 3 and 4, is correct. Pair 3 is wrong: New Orleans lies on the Mississippi River near its delta on the Gulf of Mexico, not on the Missouri. The Missouri is a tributary that joins the Mississippi near St. Louis. Pair 4 is wrong: Hyderabad (India) lies on the Musi River, a tributary of the Krishna, not the Paleru. The other pairs are correct: Budapest lies on the Danube, which divides Buda and Pest, and Cologne lies on the Rhine. Concept: other city-river pairs include Vienna and Belgrade (Danube), Paris (Seine), London (Thames), Baghdad (Tigris), Cairo (Nile) and Lahore (Ravi). The Danube flows through ten countries. Trap: the Missouri is the longest US river, but New Orleans is on the Mississippi.

Trap

New Orleans is on the Mississippi and Hyderabad on the Musi.

Which of the following pair is/are NOT correctly matched?

(Dam – River)

  • 1. Baglihar Dam – Chenab
  • 2. Pandoh Dam – Ravi
  • 3. Srisailam Dam – Tungabhadra

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (b) & explanation

Option (b), 2 and 3, is correct. Pair 2 is wrong: the Pandoh dam in Mandi district, Himachal Pradesh, is on the Beas River, not the Ravi. It diverts Beas water through tunnels to the Sutlej for the Dehar power project. Pair 3 is wrong: the Srisailam dam is on the Krishna River, on the border of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, not the Tungabhadra. Pair 1 is correct: the Baglihar dam in Ramban, Jammu and Kashmir, is on the Chenab, and was cleared by a neutral expert under the Indus Waters Treaty in 2007. Concept: the Tungabhadra dam is at Hosapete, Karnataka. The Ranjit Sagar (Thein) dam is on the Ravi, and Pong is on the Beas. India put the Indus Waters Treaty in abeyance in April 2025. Trap: Pandoh = Beas.

Which of the following sites were obtained by the British East India Company under the Treaty of Sugauli in 1816?

  • 1. Kathmandu
  • 2. Shimla
  • 3. Ranikhet
  • 4. Nainital

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (b) & explanation

Option (b), 2, 3 and 4, is correct. The Anglo-Nepal War (1814-16) ended with the Treaty of Sugauli, signed in December 1815 and ratified in March 1816. Nepal gave up Kumaon and Garhwal, the Shimla hill tracts and much of the Terai. That is how Nainital and Ranikhet (in Kumaon) and Shimla came under British control, later growing into hill stations and cantonments. Kathmandu (1) remained Nepal's capital, so options (a) and (d) are wrong, and (c) leaves out Shimla. Concept: the treaty fixed the Kali (Mahakali) river as Nepal's western border and placed a British Resident in Kathmandu. Gorkha regiments date from this war. The Kalapani-Lipulekh dispute today arises from differing readings of the Kali's source.

Trap

Kathmandu stayed with Nepal; Sugauli gave the Company Kumaon and Garhwal and nearby hill tracts.

  • 1. Bajirao I
  • 2. Balaji Bajirao
  • 3. Balaji Vishwanath
  • 4. Madhav Rao I

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (b) & explanation

Option (b), 3, 1, 2, 4, is correct. Balaji Vishwanath (1713-20) was the first major Peshwa and secured the 1719 Mughal grant of chauth and sardeshmukhi. His son Bajirao I (1720-40) expanded Maratha power north and won at Palkhed (1728). Balaji Bajirao, or Nana Saheb (1740-61), was Peshwa at the Third Battle of Panipat in 1761. Madhav Rao I (1761-72) revived Maratha strength after Panipat. Options (a), (c) and (d) misorder them. Concept: under Nana Saheb the Peshwa became the real head after the Sangola agreement (1750). After Madhav Rao I came Narayan Rao, Raghunath Rao and Madhav Rao II (with Nana Fadnavis), and finally Bajirao II, who signed the Treaty of Bassein (1802). Trap: Balaji Vishwanath came before Bajirao I.

Consider the following events and arrange them in correct chronological order.

  • 1. Poona Pact
  • 2. End of Civil Disobedience Movement
  • 3. Gandhi-Irwin Pact
  • 4. Second Round Table Conference

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (d) & explanation

Option (d), 3, 4, 1, 2, is correct. The Gandhi-Irwin Pact was signed in March 1931 and suspended the Civil Disobedience Movement. Gandhi then attended the Second Round Table Conference in London (September-December 1931) as the Congress's sole representative, which ended without agreement. After Ramsay MacDonald's Communal Award (August 1932), Gandhi fasted in Yerwada jail, leading to the Poona Pact (September 1932) with Ambedkar, which reserved seats for depressed classes within joint electorates. The Civil Disobedience Movement was formally withdrawn in April-May 1934. Options (a), (b) and (c) misorder these. Concept: the movement resumed in January 1932 after the conference failed. The Karachi session (March 1931) endorsed the pact. Trap: the formal end came in 1934.

Trap

Given below are two statements one is labelled as Assertion (A) and the other as Reason (R).

Assertion (A): The territories of the Sultanate could be broadly divided into two parts – the Khalsa and the Jagirs.

Reason (R): The Jagirs comprised of the land under the control of the State.

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (b) & explanation

Option (b), A true and R false, is correct. Land in the Delhi Sultanate was broadly divided into khalisa (khalsa), whose revenue went straight to the royal treasury, and iqtas (later loosely called jagirs), assigned to nobles and officers in place of salary. So A is true. R is false because it reverses the meaning: land directly under the control of the State was the khalisa, not the jagirs. Concept: Iltutmish institutionalised the iqta system. Alauddin Khalji brought more land into khalisa and measured revenue directly. Firoz Tughlaq made iqtas hereditary. Under the Mughals, land was again divided into khalisa and jagir, run through the mansabdari system. Trap: R swaps khalisa and jagir.

Trap

State-controlled land was khalisa, not jagir.

  • 1. Pabna
  • 2. Indigo
  • 3. Kuka
  • 4. Sanyasi

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (d) & explanation

Option (d), 4, 2, 3, 1, is correct. The Sanyasi and Fakir revolt in Bengal began around 1770, after the famine of 1770, and is the backdrop of Bankim Chandra's Anandamath. The Indigo revolt broke out in Bengal in 1859-60, made famous by Dinabandhu Mitra's play Neel Darpan. The Kuka (Namdhari) movement in Punjab, founded by Baba Ram Singh, turned militant in 1871-72, and many Kukas were blown from cannon at Malerkotla. The Pabna agrarian league against zamindars formed in 1873. Options (a), (b) and (c) misorder them. Concept: the Indigo revolt led to the Indigo Commission (1860), and Pabna led to the Bengal Tenancy Act (1885). Trap: Kuka (1871-72) came just before Pabna (1873).

List-I (Writer): A. Trivikram Bhatta B. Somdev C. Jaidev D. Kshemendra

List-II (Book): 1. Gita Govinda 2. Brihatkathamanjari 3. Nal Champu 4. Katha Sarit Sagar

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (a) & explanation

Option (a), A-3, B-4, C-1, D-2, is correct. Trivikrama Bhatta, a 10th-century poet at the Rashtrakuta court, wrote Nala Champu, the earliest known Sanskrit champu (mixed prose and verse). Somadeva, an 11th-century Kashmiri poet, wrote Kathasaritsagara (Ocean of the Streams of Stories) for Queen Suryamati. Jayadeva, a 12th-century poet at the court of Lakshmana Sena of Bengal, wrote Gita Govinda, about Radha and Krishna. Kshemendra, another 11th-century Kashmiri poet, wrote Brihatkathamanjari. Options (b), (c) and (d) swap these. Concept: both Kashmiri works retell Gunadhya's lost Brihatkatha in Paishachi Prakrit. Kalhana wrote Rajatarangini, and Bilhana wrote Vikramankadevacharita. Trap: Somadeva and Kshemendra both retold Brihatkatha, so they are easy to swap.

Trap

Somadeva wrote the Kathasaritsagara, and Kshemendra the Brihatkathamanjari; the Kashmiri pair is easy to swap.

Consider the following events and arrange them in correct chronological order.

  • 1. Cripps Mission
  • 2. Cabinet Mission
  • 3. Shimla Conference
  • 4. Wavell Plan

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (a) & explanation

Option (a), 1, 4, 3, 2, is correct. The Cripps Mission came in March 1942 and offered dominion status after the war, with a right for provinces to opt out; Congress rejected it. The Wavell Plan was announced in June 1945, proposing a reconstituted Executive Council with all members Indian except the Viceroy and the Commander-in-Chief. The Shimla Conference (June-July 1945) was called to discuss that plan and failed over Jinnah's demand to nominate all Muslim members. The Cabinet Mission arrived in March 1946 and proposed a three-tier federation and a Constituent Assembly. Options (b), (c) and (d) misorder them. Concept: the August Offer (1940) came before Cripps, and the Mountbatten Plan (3 June 1947) came after the Cabinet Mission. Trap: the Wavell Plan came first, then the conference to discuss it.

Trap

The Wavell Plan came before the Shimla Conference, which was called to discuss it.

Arrange the following saints in correct chronological order and select the correct answer from the code given below.

  • 1. Nanak
  • 2. Chaitanya Mahaprabhu
  • 3. Namdev
  • 4. Kabir

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (b) & explanation

Option (b), 3, 4, 1, 2, is correct. Namdev (c. 1270-1350) was a Varkari saint of Maharashtra, and some of his verses are in the Guru Granth Sahib. Kabir lived in the 15th century (traditionally c. 1440-1518) and was a weaver of Varanasi who attacked ritual and caste. Guru Nanak was born in 1469 at Talwandi (Nankana Sahib) and founded Sikhism. Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was born in 1486 at Nadia (Navadwip) and spread Gaudiya Vaishnavism and kirtan in Bengal and Odisha. Options (a), (c) and (d) misorder them. Concept: Bhakti in the north drew on the Alvars and Nayanars of the south and on Ramananda, said to be Kabir's guru. Tulsidas and Mirabai came in the 16th century. Trap: Namdev was earlier than Kabir.

Trap

Guru Nanak (born 1469) was older than Chaitanya (born 1486).

UPPCS Prelims 2025 · GS Paper I

Given below are two statements, one is labelled as Assertion (A) and the other as Reason (R).

Assertion (A): Buland Darwaja was constructed at Fatehpur Sikri by the Mughal emperor Akbar.

Reason (R): Akbar built this monument to commemorate the birth of his son Jahangir.

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (b) & explanation

Option (b), A true and R false, is correct. Akbar built the Buland Darwaza at Fatehpur Sikri around 1575-76, as the southern gateway of the Jama Masjid. At about 54 m it is among the highest gateways in the world. So A is true. R is false: it commemorates Akbar's victory over Gujarat (1573), not Jahangir's birth. Akbar's link to Salim's birth is the founding of Fatehpur Sikri itself, in honour of Sheikh Salim Chishti, whose blessing he credited for the birth in 1569. Concept: other buildings at Fatehpur Sikri include the Panch Mahal, Diwan-i-Khas, Ibadat Khana and the tomb of Salim Chishti. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Trap: the city honours the birth, but the gate honours Gujarat.

Trap

Buland Darwaza marks the Gujarat victory (1573); linking it to Jahangir's birth is the common slip.

With reference to the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle, 1748, which of the following statements is/are correct?

  • 1. The first Carnatic war ended.
  • 2. Madras was returned to the British.

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (b) & explanation

Option (b), both 1 and 2, is correct. The Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle (1748) ended the War of the Austrian Succession in Europe, and with it the First Carnatic War (1746-48) between the English and French companies in India (statement 1). Madras, captured by the French under La Bourdonnais in 1746, was returned to the British in exchange for Louisbourg in North America (statement 2). Concept: the war showed the power of small, disciplined European forces, as at the Battle of St. Thome (Adyar, 1746). The Second Carnatic War (1749-54) ended with the Treaty of Pondicherry. The Third (1756-63) was decided at Wandiwash (1760) and ended with the Treaty of Paris. Trap: Madras was given back, not kept by the French.

Trap

Madras was returned to the British in 1748.

Match List-I with List-II and select the correct answer using the code given below the lists.

List-I (Emperor): A. Babur B. Humayun C. Jahangir D. Shah Jahan

List-II (City where Tomb is located): 1. Agra 2. Lahore 3. Delhi 4. Kabul

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (a) & explanation

Option (a), A-4, B-3, C-2, D-1, is correct. Babur died at Agra in 1530, but at his wish he was reburied in Kabul, in the garden known as Bagh-e-Babur. Humayun's tomb in Delhi, built by his widow Bega Begum and designed by Mirak Mirza Ghiyas, was the first garden tomb in India and is a World Heritage Site. Jahangir is buried at Shahdara near Lahore, now in Pakistan. Shah Jahan lies beside Mumtaz Mahal in the Taj Mahal at Agra. Options (b), (c) and (d) swap these. Concept: Akbar's tomb is at Sikandra (Agra), and Aurangzeb's simple grave is at Khuldabad near Aurangabad (now Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar). Trap: Babur died in Agra but is buried in Kabul.

Trap

Jahangir is buried at Shahdara, Lahore; Babur is buried in Kabul.

  • 1. Battle of Kannauj
  • 2. Battle of Daurah
  • 3. Battle of Samugarh
  • 4. Battle of Chausa

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (d) & explanation

Option (d), 2, 4, 1, 3, is correct. The Battle of Dadrah (Daurah), in 1532, was Humayun's victory over the Afghans under Mahmud Lodi near Lucknow. At the Battle of Chausa (1539) Sher Shah defeated Humayun, after which Sher Khan took the title Sher Shah. The Battle of Kannauj or Bilgram (1540) drove Humayun out of India until 1555. The Battle of Samugarh (1658) saw Aurangzeb and Murad defeat Dara Shikoh in the war of succession. Options (a), (b) and (c) misorder them. Concept: Humayun regained the throne by defeating Sikandar Sur at Sirhind in 1555. Aurangzeb had earlier won at Dharmat (1658), and later defeated Dara at Deorai (1659). Trap: Chausa came before Kannauj.

Trap

Chausa (1539) came before Kannauj (1540).

Which one of the following books is NOT written by Kalidas?

  • 1. Meghaduta
  • 2. Raghuvamsam
  • 3. Shringar Shatak

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (c) & explanation

Option (c), only 3, is correct. Shringara Shataka is not by Kalidasa. It is one of the three Shatakas (Shatakatraya) of Bhartrihari, with Niti Shataka and Vairagya Shataka, each of about a hundred verses on love, conduct and renunciation. Meghaduta (1), a lyric poem in which an exiled yaksha sends a message through a cloud, and Raghuvamsha (2), an epic on the dynasty of Raghu, are both by Kalidasa, so options (a), (b) and (d) are wrong. Concept: Kalidasa, linked to the Gupta court and traditionally to Chandragupta II's navratnas, also wrote Kumarasambhava, Ritusamhara, and the plays Abhijnanashakuntalam, Vikramorvashiyam and Malavikagnimitram. Bhartrihari also wrote the grammatical work Vakyapadiya. Trap: Shataka works belong to Bhartrihari.

Trap

Shringara Shataka is Bhartrihari's; Kalidasa wrote Meghaduta and Raghuvamsha.

Which of the following archaeological sites related to Indus Valley civilization are situated in present day Uttar Pradesh?

  • 1. Mandi
  • 2. Rakhigarhi
  • 3. Hulas

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (b) & explanation

Option (b), 1 and 3, is correct. Mandi in Muzaffarnagar district and Hulas in Saharanpur district are Harappan sites in western Uttar Pradesh, in the Ganga-Yamuna doab. Mandi is known for a hoard of Late Harappan gold and silver ornaments found in 2000, and Hulas yielded Late Harappan pottery and evidence of crops including rice. Rakhigarhi (2) is in Hisar district, Haryana, so options (a), (c) and (d) are wrong. Concept: Alamgirpur in Meerut is the easternmost Harappan site, and Sanauli in Baghpat has chariot burials of about 2000 BCE. Rakhigarhi is the largest Harappan site in India and one of the five iconic sites in the 2020 Budget. Trap: Rakhigarhi is in Haryana, not UP.

Trap

Rakhigarhi is the big name, but it is in Haryana.

List-II (Important contribution/work): 1. Permanent settlement of Bengal 2. Prohibition of Practice of Sati 3. Partition of Bengal 4. Doctrine of Lapse

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (d) & explanation

Option (d), A-4, B-3, C-2, D-1, is correct. Lord Dalhousie (1848-56) used the Doctrine of Lapse to annex Satara, Jhansi, Nagpur and other states. Lord Curzon (1899-1905) carried out the Partition of Bengal in 1905, which set off the Swadeshi movement. Lord William Bentinck banned sati by Regulation XVII of 1829, with support from Raja Ram Mohan Roy. Lord Cornwallis introduced the Permanent Settlement of Bengal in 1793 with zamindars. Options (a), (b) and (c) swap these. Concept: Dalhousie also brought the first railway (1853), telegraph and the Post Office Act. Curzon set up the Archaeological Survey's revival and the Indian Universities Act (1904). Hardinge II reversed the partition in 1911. Trap: Curzon partitioned Bengal, while Dalhousie used lapse.

Trap

Partition of Bengal = Curzon; lapse = Dalhousie.

List-II (Dynasty): 1. Rashtrakuta 2. Pallava 3. Chola 4. Pandya

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (c) & explanation

Option (c), A-2, B-4, C-1, D-3, is correct. Mahendravarman I (c. 600-630) was a Pallava king of Kanchi who began rock-cut temples at Mamallapuram and Mandagapattu and wrote the play Mattavilasa Prahasana. Kadungon (late 6th century) revived the Pandya dynasty of Madurai by ending the Kalabhra interregnum. Amoghavarsha I (c. 814-878) was a Rashtrakuta king who wrote Kavirajamarga in Kannada and was praised by the Arab traveller Sulaiman. Rajaraja I (985-1014) was a Chola king who built the Brihadeeswara temple at Thanjavur. Options (a), (b) and (d) swap these. Concept: the Pallavas fought the Chalukyas of Badami, as when Narasimhavarman I killed Pulakeshin II in 642. Rajendra I took the Cholas to the Ganga and Southeast Asia. Trap: Kadungon is Pandya, not Pallava.

Trap

Kadungon revived the Pandyas, not the Pallavas.

Arrange the following conquests of Alauddin Khalji in correct chronological order and select the correct answer from the code given below.

  • 1. Ranthambore
  • 2. Jaisalmer
  • 3. Warangal
  • 4. Chittor

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (c) & explanation

Option (c), 2, 1, 4, 3, is correct. Alauddin Khalji's forces took Jaisalmer around 1299. Ranthambore, under Hammir Dev Chauhan, fell in 1301 after a long siege. Chittor fell in 1303; Rani Padmini's jauhar is a later legend from Jayasi's Padmavat (1540). Warangal, the Kakatiya capital, submitted in 1309-10 to Malik Kafur, who took the Koh-i-Noor according to tradition. Options (a), (b) and (d) misorder them. Concept: Malik Kafur's southern campaigns went on to Devagiri (Yadavas), Dwarasamudra (Hoysalas) and Madurai (Pandyas) by 1311. Alauddin brought market control, branding of horses (dagh) and measurement of land. Amir Khusrau's Khazainul Futuh records these campaigns. Trap: Jaisalmer is the earliest, and Warangal the latest.

Trap

Jaisalmer (about 1299) came before Ranthambhor; Warangal under Malik Kafur was last.

Consider the following events and arrange them in correct chronological order.

  • 1. Acquisition of Awadh by the British
  • 2. Ilbert Bill Controversy
  • 3. Indigo Revolt
  • 4. Second Anglo-Afghan War

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (a) & explanation

Option (a), 1, 3, 4, 2, is correct. Awadh was annexed by Lord Dalhousie in February 1856, on grounds of misgovernance, not the Doctrine of Lapse; Nawab Wajid Ali Shah was exiled to Calcutta. The Indigo revolt broke out in Bengal in 1859-60 against European planters, led by Digambar and Bishnu Biswas. The Second Anglo-Afghan War (1878-80) was fought under Lord Lytton and ended with the Treaty of Gandamak. The Ilbert Bill controversy (1883) under Lord Ripon arose over allowing Indian judges to try Europeans, and the white backlash forced a compromise. Options (b), (c) and (d) misorder them. Concept: the annexation of Awadh was a major cause of the 1857 revolt. The Ilbert Bill showed racial bias and helped spur the founding of the Congress in 1885. Trap: Awadh came before the Indigo revolt.

Trap

Awadh annexation (1856) came first.

Match List-I with List-II and select the correct answer using the code given below the lists.

List-I (Disciple): A. Kabir B. Amir Khusrau C. Surdas D. Mardana

List-II (Guru): 1. Guru Nanak Dev 2. Swami Ramananda 3. Nizamuddin Auliya 4. Vallabhacharya

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (b) & explanation

Option (b), A-2, B-3, C-4, D-1, is correct. Kabir, the 15th-century weaver-saint of Varanasi, is traditionally called a disciple of Swami Ramananda, who welcomed people of all castes. Amir Khusrau, the poet and musician, was a disciple of the Chishti saint Nizamuddin Auliya of Delhi, and the two are buried near each other. Surdas, the blind poet of Sursagar, was a disciple of Vallabhacharya, founder of the Pushtimarg sect. Bhai Mardana, a Muslim rabab player, travelled with Guru Nanak on his journeys (udasis) as companion and musician. Options (a), (c) and (d) swap these. Concept: Ramananda's other disciples are said to include Raidas (Ravidas), Sena and Dhanna. Khusrau is credited with qawwali and the Hindustani style. Trap: Surdas = Vallabhacharya, not Ramananda.

Trap

Surdas was a disciple of Vallabhacharya, and Kabir of Ramananda.

Which of the following events took place in the year 1911?

  • 1. Partition of Bengal revoked
  • 2. Transfer of capital from Calcutta to Delhi
  • 3. Lucknow pact between Congress and Muslim League

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (a) & explanation

Option (a), 1 and 2, is correct. At the Delhi Durbar of 12 December 1911, King George V announced the annulment of the 1905 Partition of Bengal and the transfer of the capital from Calcutta to Delhi. The Lucknow Pact (3) between the Congress and the Muslim League was signed in December 1916, so options (b), (c) and (d) are wrong. Concept: the 1911 Durbar was the only one attended by a reigning British monarch, and Lord Hardinge II was Viceroy. Bihar and Orissa were separated from Bengal, and Assam was made a chief commissioner's province again. New Delhi, designed by Lutyens and Baker, was inaugurated in 1931. The Lucknow Pact accepted separate electorates, and Tilak and Jinnah were its architects. Trap: the Lucknow Pact was 1916.

Trap

The Lucknow Pact sounds close in time, but it came in 1916; 1911 saw the partition annulled and the capital shift announced.

  • 1. Chettur Sankaran Nair
  • 2. Ishwari Prasad
  • 3. Muhammad Shafi
  • 4. Iqbal Narain Gurtu

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (d) & explanation

Option (d), only 1, is correct. Sir Chettur Sankaran Nair, the only Indian member of the Viceroy's Executive Council at the time, resigned in July 1919 in protest against the Jallianwala Bagh massacre of 13 April 1919 and martial law in Punjab. He later wrote Gandhi and Anarchy (1922), and Michael O'Dwyer sued him for libel in London. Ishwari Prasad (2), Muhammad Shafi (3) and Iqbal Narain Gurtu (4) did not resign over it, so options (a), (b) and (c) are wrong. Concept: Rabindranath Tagore gave up his knighthood, and Gandhi returned his Kaiser-i-Hind medal. The Hunter Committee inquired into the massacre. Sankaran Nair was Congress President in 1897 at Amraoti. Trap: Muhammad Shafi stayed on the Council.

Trap

Tagore returned his knighthood; it was Sankaran Nair who resigned from the Council.

Given below are two statements, one is labelled as Assertion (A) and the other as Reason (R).

Assertion (A): Babur wrote Tuzk-e-Babri in Chagatai Turki.

Reason (R): Turki was the official language of the Mughal Court.

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (b) & explanation

Option (b), A true and R false, is correct. Babur wrote his memoirs, the Tuzuk-i-Baburi or Baburnama, in Chagatai Turki, his mother tongue, so A is true. They give a frank account of his life and of Hindustan's plants, animals and people. R is false: the official language of the Mughal court was Persian, not Turki. Persian remained the court language until the British replaced it with English in 1835. Concept: the Baburnama was translated into Persian by Abdur Rahim Khan-i-Khanan under Akbar in 1589. Humayun's life is described in Gulbadan Begum's Humayun-nama, Akbar's in Abul Fazl's Akbarnama, and Jahangir wrote his memoir, the Tuzuk-i-Jahangiri, in Persian. Trap: the memoir was in Turki, but the court used Persian.

Trap

Babur wrote in Chagatai Turki, but the court language was Persian, so R is false.

With reference to the New Pamban Bridge which of the following statements is/are correct?

  • 1. It was constructed by Rail Vikas Nigam Limited, which is a 'Navratna' public sector unit under the Ministry of Railways.
  • 2. It is India's first vertical lift railway sea bridge.

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (b) & explanation

Option (b), both 1 and 2, is correct. The New Pamban Bridge, about 2.08 km long, links Rameswaram on Pamban Island to Mandapam on the mainland across the Palk Strait. It was built by Rail Vikas Nigam Limited, a Navratna PSU under the Ministry of Railways (statement 1). It is India's first vertical-lift railway sea bridge, with a 72.5 m span that rises about 17 m to let ships pass (statement 2). Prime Minister Modi opened it on 6 April 2025, Ram Navami. Concept: it replaced the 1914 Scherzer rolling-lift bridge, which was closed in 2022 because of corrosion. Concept: the Chenab rail bridge (2025) is the world's highest railway arch bridge, and Anji Khad is India's first cable-stayed rail bridge.

Trap

RVNL is a Navratna PSU under the Railways, not a private builder.

Given below are two statements, one is labelled as Assertion (A) and the other as Reason (R).

Assertion (A): India is the second largest mobile gaming market in the world.

Reason (R): There are more than 950 million internet users in India.

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (d) & explanation

Option (d), both true and R explains A, is the official key. India is described as one of the world's largest mobile gaming markets by number of gamers and downloads, often ranked second after China. A huge base of internet users, about 950 million or more, mostly on cheap mobile data and affordable smartphones, is what drives that scale. Concept: by revenue, India still ranks far lower than the US, China or Japan. The Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025 banned real-money online games while promoting e-sports and social games. Online gaming is also under the IT Rules and attracts 28% GST on real-money platforms. Note: rankings differ by source and measure, so A holds by players, not by revenue.

India ranks high by number of gamers, not by revenue.

Iron dome missile defence system belongs to which of the following countries?

  • 1. France
  • 2. United States of America
  • 3. Israel

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (c) & explanation

Option (c), only 3, is correct. Iron Dome is a short-range air defence system developed by Israel's Rafael Advanced Defense Systems with Israel Aerospace Industries. It became operational in 2011 and intercepts rockets and artillery shells fired from about 4 to 70 km away, firing Tamir interceptors only at threats heading for populated areas. The United States (2) co-funded it and helps produce parts, but it is not an American system, and France (1) has no role, so options (a), (b) and (d) are wrong. Concept: Israel's layered defence also includes David's Sling (medium range), Arrow 2 and 3 (ballistic missiles) and the Iron Beam laser. India uses the Russian S-400 (Sudarshan Chakra) and its own Akash and BMD systems. Trap: US funding does not make it American.

Trap

Which of the following Programmes/Schemes is/are NOT included in meeting the objectives of National Education Policy 2020?

  • 1. ULLAS
  • 2. DIKSHA
  • 3. Bharat Nirman Programme

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (c) & explanation

Option (c), only 3, is correct. ULLAS (Understanding Lifelong Learning for All in Society), the New India Literacy Programme for 2022-27, supports NEP 2020's goal of adult education and full literacy. DIKSHA (Digital Infrastructure for Knowledge Sharing) is the national digital platform for school teachers and students and supports NEP's digital learning goals. Bharat Nirman (3), launched in 2005, was a rural infrastructure programme covering irrigation, roads, housing, water, electricity and telephony. It has nothing to do with NEP 2020, so it is the one not included. Concept: other NEP-linked schemes include PM SHRI schools, NIPUN Bharat (foundational literacy), PM eVidya, the Academic Bank of Credits and NCERT's new textbooks. Trap: Bharat Nirman predates NEP by 15 years.

Trap

Bharat Nirman was a 2005 rural infrastructure plan, not part of NEP 2020.

List-II (Area of Goal): 1. Clean water and sanitation 2. Quality education 3. To end poverty in all forms 4. Good health and well-being

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (c) & explanation

Option (c), A-3, B-4, C-2, D-1, is correct. SDG 1 is to end poverty in all its forms everywhere. SDG 3 is good health and well-being. SDG 4 is quality education. SDG 6 is clean water and sanitation. Options (a), (b) and (d) mismatch these. Concept: the 17 Sustainable Development Goals with 169 targets were adopted by the UN in September 2015 as Agenda 2030, replacing the eight Millennium Development Goals. Others include SDG 2 zero hunger, SDG 5 gender equality, SDG 7 clean energy, SDG 13 climate action, SDG 14 life below water and SDG 15 life on land. NITI Aayog publishes the SDG India Index, and Kerala and Uttarakhand topped the 2023-24 edition. Trap: SDG 6 is water, not education.

Trap

SDG 6 is clean water and sanitation.

Which of the following pairs is/are NOT correctly matched?

(Day – Date)

  • 1. International Ozone Day – 16 September
  • 2. World Environment Day – 5 June
  • 3. World Wildlife Day – 22 March

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (c) & explanation

Option (c), only 3, is correct. Pair 3 is wrong: World Wildlife Day is 3 March, marking the signing of CITES in 1973. 22 March is World Water Day. The other pairs are correct: International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer is 16 September, marking the Montreal Protocol (1987), and World Environment Day is 5 June, marking the 1972 Stockholm Conference. Concept: other environment days include World Wetlands Day (2 February, Ramsar), International Day of Forests (21 March), Earth Day (22 April), Biodiversity Day (22 May), World Oceans Day (8 June) and Desertification and Drought Day (17 June). Saudi Arabia hosted World Environment Day 2024, and South Korea hosted it in 2025. Trap: 22 March is water, not wildlife.

Trap

22 March is World Water Day; World Wildlife Day is 3 March.

"Swavalambini", a women entrepreneurship programme for the North-East is launched by which of the following ministries?

  • 1. Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship
  • 2. Ministry of Women and Child Development
  • 3. Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (d) & explanation

Option (d), only 1, is correct. Swavalambini, a women entrepreneurship programme for the North-East, was launched in 2024 by the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, together with NITI Aayog. It is run through the National Institute for Entrepreneurship and Small Business Development (NIESBUD) and the Indian Institute of Entrepreneurship (IIE), Guwahati. It began with women students in higher education institutions in Assam, Meghalaya and Mizoram, with awareness programmes, entrepreneurship development training and mentorship. The Ministries of Women and Child Development (2) and MSME (3) did not launch it, so options (a), (b) and (c) are wrong. Concept: related schemes include NITI Aayog's Women Entrepreneurship Platform, Stand-Up India and Lakhpati Didi. Trap: it is a skilling ministry scheme.

Trap

Swavalambini = Skill Development ministry with NITI Aayog.

With reference to Jnanpith Award, which of the following statements is/are correct?

  • 1. The 58th Jnanpith Award was conferred upon Sanskrit Scholar Jagadguru Rambhadracharya Ji.
  • 2. The 1st Jnanpith Award was given in 1965.

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (b) & explanation

Option (b), both 1 and 2, is correct. The 58th Jnanpith Award, for 2023, was shared by Jagadguru Rambhadracharya, the Sanskrit scholar and founder of the Tulsi Peeth at Chitrakoot, and Gulzar, the Urdu poet and lyricist. It was announced in February 2024 and presented in May 2025 (statement 1). The first Jnanpith Award was given in 1965 to the Malayalam poet G. Sankara Kurup for Odakkuzhal (statement 2). Concept: the award is given by the Bharatiya Jnanpith trust (founded by the Sahu Jain family) for outstanding contribution to literature in Eighth Schedule languages and English. The 59th Jnanpith (2024) went to Hindi writer Vinod Kumar Shukla. Ashapurna Devi (1976) was the first woman to win it.

Trap

58th Jnanpith shared by Rambhadracharya and Gulzar.

Who among the following had won the International Booker Prize in 2025?

  • 1. Banu Mushtaq
  • 2. Deepa Bhasthi
  • 3. Sanjay Chauhan

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (a) & explanation

Option (a), 1 and 2, is correct. The International Booker Prize 2025 went to Heart Lamp, a collection of Kannada short stories by Banu Mushtaq, translated into English by Deepa Bhasthi. The prize money of £50,000 is shared equally between author and translator, so both count as winners. It was the first Kannada book and the first short-story collection to win. Sanjay Chauhan (3) is unrelated, so options (b), (c) and (d) are wrong. Concept: Geetanjali Shree's Tomb of Sand, translated from Hindi by Daisy Rockwell, won in 2022 as the first Indian-language book. The Booker Prize itself is for fiction written in English, and in 2025 it went to David Szalay for Flesh. Trap: the translator shares the International Booker.

Trap

The prize is shared by the author and the translator, so pick both Banu Mushtaq and Deepa Bhasthi.

'BHARATPOL', an online portal for International Police Co-operation has been developed by which of the following?

  • 1. Central Bureau of Investigation
  • 2. Research and Analysis Wing
  • 3. Intelligence Bureau
  • 4. Enforcement Directorate

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (d) & explanation

Option (d), only 1, is correct. BHARATPOL is an online portal developed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), launched by Home Minister Amit Shah on 7 January 2025. The CBI is India's National Central Bureau for Interpol, and the portal lets State and UT police and central agencies send requests for international help, such as Red Corner Notices, directly and in real time. RAW (2), the Intelligence Bureau (3) and the Enforcement Directorate (4) did not develop it, so options (a), (b) and (c) are wrong. Concept: Interpol notices are colour-coded: Red (arrest), Blue (information), Yellow (missing person), Black (unidentified body), Green (warning) and Purple (methods). India received Interpol's first Silver Notice, for tracing assets, in 2025. Trap: the CBI, not IB, is Interpol's link in India.

Trap

BHARATPOL is run by the CBI, India's Interpol nodal agency, not the IB or NIA.

Pushkar Kumbh Mela 2025 was held in May 2025 in which of the following State(s)?

  • 1. Rajasthan
  • 2. Uttar Pradesh
  • 3. Uttarakhand

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (c) & explanation

Option (c), only 3, is correct. The Pushkar Kumbh of May 2025 was held at Mana village in Chamoli district, Uttarakhand, near Badrinath, at the meeting of the Alaknanda and the Saraswati at Keshav Prayag. It takes place every 12 years when Jupiter enters Gemini (Mithun). It draws many devotees from South India, especially Vaishnavas linked to Ramanujacharya and Madhvacharya traditions. It was not held in Rajasthan (1), despite Pushkar town there, or in Uttar Pradesh (2), so options (a), (b) and (d) are wrong. Concept: Mana is described as India's first village (formerly the last village) on the Tibet border, covered by the Vibrant Villages Programme. The Maha Kumbh at Prayagraj ran from January to February 2025. Trap: the name Pushkar points falsely to Rajasthan.

Trap

The name sounds like Pushkar in Rajasthan, but this Kumbh was at Mana in Uttarakhand.

Joint special forces exercise 'KHANJAR-XII' was held in March 2025 between India and which of the following Countries?

  • 1. Russia
  • 2. Turkmenistan
  • 3. Kyrgyzstan
  • 4. Mongolia

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (b) & explanation

Option (b), only 3, is correct. KHANJAR is the annual joint special forces exercise between India and Kyrgyzstan. The 12th edition was held at Tokmok, Kyrgyzstan, in March 2025. It focuses on counter-terrorism and special operations in mountainous terrain. It is not held with Russia (1), Turkmenistan (2) or Mongolia (4), so options (a), (c) and (d) are wrong. Concept: other India exercises include INDRA (Russia), Nomadic Elephant (Mongolia), Dustlik (Uzbekistan), Prabal Dostyk (Kazakhstan), Yudh Abhyas (USA), Shakti (France), Mitra Shakti (Sri Lanka), Surya Kiran (Nepal) and Garuda (France, air force). Trap: Nomadic Elephant is Mongolia, so do not confuse it with KHANJAR.

Trap

KHANJAR is with Kyrgyzstan, not Kazakhstan.

Given below are two statements, one is labelled as Assertion (A) and the other as Reason (R).

Assertion (A): The concept of National Integration involves political, economic, social, cultural and psychological dimensions and inter-relation between them.

Reason (R): The National Integration Council was constituted in 1961 on the principle of 'Unity in Diversity'.

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (a) & explanation

Option (a), both true but R not the explanation, is correct. National integration is a broad idea that includes political unity, economic linkages, social harmony, cultural exchange and the psychological feeling of belonging, and these dimensions are linked. So A is true. R is also true: the National Integration Council was set up in 1961, after a national integration conference called by Nehru, to tackle communalism, casteism, regionalism and linguism under the idea of unity in diversity. But the founding of a council does not explain why integration has many dimensions, so R does not explain A. Concept: the NIC was revived several times and last met in 2013. The National Foundation for Communal Harmony and Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat also promote integration. Trap: both are true but unrelated.

Trap

Both statements are true, but a true R need not explain A. Check the link, not just the facts.

UPPCS Prelims 2025 · GS Paper I

Given below are two statements, one is labelled as Assertion (A) and the other as Reason (R).

Assertion (A): India's success is critical for the global success of Sustainable Development Goals.

Reason (R): India accounts for nearly one-sixth of the total world population.

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (d) & explanation

Option (d), both true and R explains A, is correct. India has about one-sixth of the world's population and is now the most populous country, ahead of China since 2023. Because of that, progress on poverty, hunger, health, education, sanitation and clean energy in India moves the global SDG numbers. So India's success is critical for the world, and R gives the reason. Concept: NITI Aayog tracks progress through the SDG India Index, and its MPI study showed about 24.8 crore people left multidimensional poverty between 2013-14 and 2022-23. India's localisation of SDGs, through State and district indices, is often cited as a model. The 2030 Agenda has 17 goals and 169 targets. Trap: R directly explains A, so (a) is wrong.

Trap

India has about one-sixth of humanity, so R explains A.

Which of the following countries is/are NOT a member of the 'Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Co-operation (BIMSTEC)'?

  • 1. Thailand
  • 2. Nepal
  • 3. Bhutan
  • 4. Indonesia

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (c) & explanation

Option (c), only 4, is correct. BIMSTEC has seven members: Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Thailand. Indonesia (4) is not a member, though it borders the Bay of Bengal region through the Andaman Sea. Thailand (1), Nepal (2) and Bhutan (3) are members, so options (a), (b) and (d) are wrong. Concept: BIMSTEC was formed in 1997 by the Bangkok Declaration, with its secretariat in Dhaka. Its charter came into force in 2024. The 6th summit, held in Bangkok in April 2025, adopted the Bangkok Vision 2030 and a maritime transport agreement. Bangladesh holds the current chair. With SAARC stalled, India sees BIMSTEC as a link between its Neighbourhood First and Act East policies. Trap: Indonesia is in ASEAN, not BIMSTEC.

Trap

Indonesia lies on the Bay of Bengal rim but is not a BIMSTEC member; Myanmar and Thailand are.

With reference to 'International Solar Alliance', which of the following statements is/are correct?

  • 1. It is the first treaty based Inter-governmental organisation headquartered in India with 38 member countries.
  • 2. World Solar Bank and One Sun One World One Grid Initiative were initiated under it.

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (a) & explanation

Option (a), only 2, is correct. The International Solar Alliance is indeed the first treaty-based intergovernmental organisation headquartered in India, at Gurugram (Gwal Pahari), launched by India and France at COP21 in 2015. But statement 1 is wrong because it has far more than 38 members: about 112 full members and 125 member and signatory countries. Statement 2 is right: the One Sun One World One Grid initiative (launched at COP26) and the proposed World Solar Bank are ISA initiatives. Concept: the ISA was first meant for sunbelt countries between the tropics, but its membership was opened to all UN members in 2020. Its targets include $1 trillion of solar investment by 2030. Other India-led alliances are CDRI and the Global Biofuels Alliance (2023). Trap: 38 is far too low.

Trap

The ISA is the first treaty body based in India, but it has 100+ members, not 38.

  • 1. Yuva Puraskar was announced in 23 Indian languages.
  • 2. There is no Yuva Puraskar in Dogri this year.

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (b) & explanation

Option (b), both 1 and 2, is correct. On 18 June 2025, the Sahitya Akademi's Executive Board, chaired by its president Madhav Kaushik, announced the Yuva Puraskar 2025 for 23 young writers in 23 languages (statement 1). It said there was no award in Dogri that year (statement 2). Winners included Advait Kottary (English) and Parvati Tirkey (Hindi). Concept: the Yuva Puraskar, started in 2011, is for writers aged 35 or below and carries ₹50,000. The Akademi recognises 24 languages, the 22 Eighth Schedule languages plus English and Rajasthani. The Bal Sahitya Puraskar 2025 went to 24 authors, including a Dogri author. The main Sahitya Akademi Award carries ₹1 lakh. Trap: 23 out of 24 languages, with Dogri left out.

Trap

Yuva Puraskar 2025: 23 languages, no Dogri award.

List-II (Awardee 2025): 1. Shri Lakshminarayana Subramaniam 2. Shri Osamu Suzuki 3. Shri M. T. Vasudevan Nair 4. Shri D. Nageshwar Reddy

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (c) & explanation

Option (c), A-2, B-3, C-4, D-1, is correct. The Padma Vibhushan awards announced for 2025 included Osamu Suzuki, the late Suzuki Motor chairman behind Maruti, posthumously for trade and industry. M.T. Vasudevan Nair, the Malayalam writer and screenwriter, received it posthumously for literature and education. Dr D. Nageshwar Reddy, the gastroenterologist of AIG Hospitals, Hyderabad, received it for medicine. Violinist L. Subramaniam received it for art. Options (a), (b) and (d) swap these. Concept: seven Padma Vibhushans were given in 2025, also to Justice J.S. Khehar, Kumudini Lakhia, Sharda Sinha (posthumous) and others. The Padma awards are announced on Republic Day eve. Trap: Suzuki is the Japanese industrialist, and MT is the writer.

  • 1. Natasha Brown
  • 2. Kiran Desai
  • 3. Nilanjana S. Roy
  • 4. Rajni Chauhan

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (b) & explanation

Option (b), only 3, is correct. The International Booker Prize 2026 jury was chaired by British novelist Natasha Brown and included mathematician Marcus du Sautoy, translator Sophie Hughes, Kenyan writer Troy Onyango and Indian novelist and columnist Nilanjana S. Roy, based in Delhi. The question asks for the Indian novelists and journalists, so only Nilanjana Roy fits. Natasha Brown (1) is on the panel but is English, not Indian. Kiran Desai (2), the Booker-winning novelist, and Rajni Chauhan (4) were not judges, so options (a), (c) and (d) are wrong. Concept: the 2026 prize, the tenth in its current form, went to Taiwan Travelogue, announced in May 2026. Banu Mushtaq's Heart Lamp won in 2025. Trap: Natasha Brown chaired the jury but is not Indian.

Trap

'Adi Karmyogi Beta Version – A Responsive Governance Initiative' was launched by which of the following ministry in June 2025?

  • 1. Ministry of AYUSH
  • 2. Ministry of Women and Child Development
  • 3. Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment
  • 4. Ministry of Tribal Affairs

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (c) & explanation

Option (c), only 4, is correct. Adi Karmayogi, described as a responsive governance initiative, was launched by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs in June 2025, with a beta version first. It aims to build a cadre of about 20 lakh trained change-makers, including officials, volunteers and community members, to improve service delivery in tribal villages. It works through 'process labs' at State, district and block levels and Adi Sewa Kendras in villages. The Ministries of AYUSH (1), Women and Child Development (2) and Social Justice (3) did not launch it, so options (a), (b) and (d) are wrong. Concept: related schemes include PM-JANMAN (2023) for PVTGs and Dharti Aaba Janjatiya Gram Utkarsh Abhiyan (2024). Janjatiya Gauray Divas is on 15 November. Trap: 'Karmayogi' recalls Mission Karmayogi for civil servants.

Adi Karmayogi = Ministry of Tribal Affairs.

Operation Brahma was launched by India in March 2025 to provide humanitarian aid to which of the following countries?

  • 1. Bangladesh
  • 2. Myanmar
  • 3. Sri Lanka
  • 4. Malaysia

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (a) & explanation

Option (a), only 2, is correct. Operation Brahma was India's humanitarian and disaster relief mission to Myanmar after the magnitude 7.7 earthquake of 28 March 2025, centred near Sagaing and Mandalay. India sent relief by air and sea, including tents, food, medicines, an NDRF search and rescue team and an Army field hospital, as the first responder. It was not for Bangladesh (1), Sri Lanka (3) or Malaysia (4), so options (b), (c) and (d) are wrong. Concept: earlier missions include Operation Dost (Turkey and Syria earthquake, 2023), Operation Kaveri (Sudan evacuation, 2023), Operation Ajay (Israel, 2023), Operation Ganga (Ukraine, 2022) and Operation Sindhu (Iran and Israel, 2025). Brahma, the Hindu god of creation, symbolised rebuilding. Trap: Myanmar is the only answer.

  • 2. Constitution Day (India) – 27 January
  • 3. Human Rights Day (World) – 29 January

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (b) & explanation

Option (b), 2 and 3, is correct. Pair 2 is wrong: Constitution Day (Samvidhan Divas) is 26 November, marking the adoption of the Constitution in 1949; it has been observed since 2015. Pair 3 is wrong: Human Rights Day is 10 December, marking the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948. Pair 1 is correct: National Voters' Day is 25 January, the founding day of the Election Commission in 1950, observed since 2011. Concept: other January days include National Girl Child Day (24 January), Republic Day (26 January) and Martyrs' Day (30 January). Republic Day marks the Constitution coming into force on 26 January 1950. The NHRC was set up in 1993. Trap: 26 January is Republic Day, while 26 November is Constitution Day.

Answer (a) & explanation

Option (a), 2 and 3, is correct. The Gulf Cooperation Council, formed in 1981 with its headquarters in Riyadh, has six members: Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman. Iran (2) and Iraq (3) border the Persian Gulf but are not members. Bahrain (1) and Qatar (4) are members, so options (b), (c) and (d) are wrong. Concept: the GCC was formed partly in response to Iran's 1979 revolution and the Iran-Iraq war. The Saudi-led blockade of Qatar (2017-21) was ended by the Al-Ula Declaration. GCC countries host about 9 million Indians and are a major source of remittances, and India is negotiating an FTA with the GCC. Trap: Iran and Iraq are Gulf states but not GCC members.

With reference to creation of new All India Service, which of the following statements is/are correct?

  • 1. In the national interest, the Rajya Sabha can pass a resolution for creation of new All India Service.
  • 2. The resolution for creation of new All India Service must be passed by the Rajya Sabha by two-third majority of the total members of the house.

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (d) & explanation

Option (d), only 1, is correct. Under Article 312, Parliament can create a new All India Service, common to the Union and the States, if the Rajya Sabha first passes a resolution declaring it necessary in the national interest (statement 1). Statement 2 is wrong because the resolution needs two-thirds of members present and voting, not two-thirds of the total membership. Concept: the Rajya Sabha has this special power because it represents the States, and a new service affects their administration. Other special powers include Article 249, which lets Parliament legislate on a State subject. Existing All India Services are the IAS, IPS and IFoS (1966). Trap: 'total members' versus 'present and voting' is a classic swap.

Match List-I with List-II and choose the correct answer using the code given below the lists.

List-I (State): A. Maharashtra B. Karnataka C. Bihar D. Tamil Nadu

List-II (Number of seats in Rajya Sabha): 1. 16 2. 18 3. 19 4. 12

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (d) & explanation

Option (d), A-3, B-4, C-1, D-2, is correct. The Fourth Schedule allots Rajya Sabha seats to States roughly by population. Maharashtra has 19 seats, Karnataka 12, Bihar 16 and Tamil Nadu 18. Options (a), (b) and (c) swap these figures. Concept: Uttar Pradesh has the most seats (31), followed by Maharashtra (19), Tamil Nadu (18), West Bengal and Bihar (16 each). The Rajya Sabha can have at most 250 members: 238 elected by State and UT legislatures and 12 nominated by the President. It currently has 245. Members are elected by proportional representation through the single transferable vote. The House is permanent, with one-third retiring every two years. Trap: Tamil Nadu (18) has more seats than Bihar (16).

Trap

Rajya Sabha: Tamil Nadu 18, Bihar 16.

Given below are two statements, one is labelled as Assertion (A) and the other as Reason (R).

Assertion (A): India has a Parliamentary system of Government.

Reason (R): In India, the executive is responsible to the legislature.

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (d) & explanation

Option (d), both true and R explains A, is correct. India adopted the parliamentary (Westminster) system, in which the real executive, the Council of Ministers headed by the Prime Minister, comes from the legislature. Its defining feature is that the Council is collectively responsible to the Lok Sabha under Article 75(3) and stays in office only while it has the House's confidence. The same applies to States under Article 164(2). Concept: other features include a nominal head (the President), majority party rule, membership of ministers in Parliament and dissolution of the Lower House. In a presidential system, as in the USA, the executive is separate and not removable by the legislature except by impeachment. Trap: R is the core feature of A, so (a) is wrong.

Trap

Collective responsibility to the Lok Sabha is the defining feature, so R explains A.

With reference to Public Accounts Committee, which of the following statements is/are correct?

  • 1. Public Accounts Committee submits its report to the Lok Sabha.
  • 2. Public Accounts Committee consists of 15 members from Rajya Sabha.

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (d) & explanation

Option (d), only 1, is correct. The Public Accounts Committee examines the CAG's audit reports on government spending and submits its findings to the Lok Sabha (statement 1). Statement 2 is wrong: the PAC has 22 members, 15 from the Lok Sabha and 7 from the Rajya Sabha, elected each year by proportional representation through the single transferable vote. It does not have 15 Rajya Sabha members. Concept: since 1967 the chairperson has traditionally come from the opposition, and ministers cannot be members. The CAG acts as its friend, philosopher and guide. The Estimates Committee (30 members, all Lok Sabha) and the Committee on Public Undertakings (22 members) are the other financial committees. Trap: 15 is the Lok Sabha share, not the Rajya Sabha share.

Trap

The PAC has members from both Houses (15 + 7), but it reports to the Lok Sabha.

Which of the following pairs of Part of Indian Constitution and its subject is/are NOT correctly matched?

  • 1. Part IV A – Fundamental Duties
  • 2. Part VI – The States
  • 3. Part XI – The Municipalities

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (c) & explanation

Option (c), only 3, is correct. Pair 3 is wrong because Part XI (Articles 245-263) deals with relations between the Union and the States, covering legislative and administrative relations. The Municipalities are in Part IXA, added by the 74th Amendment (1992). The other pairs are correct: Part IVA (Article 51A) contains Fundamental Duties, added by the 42nd Amendment (1976), and Part VI (Articles 152-237) deals with the States. Concept: Part IX covers Panchayats, Part IXB Co-operative Societies (97th Amendment, 2011), Part XII finance, Part XIV services, Part XV elections, Part XVIII emergency provisions and Part XX amendment. The Constitution now has 22 numbered parts, plus inserted parts. Trap: Part XI is Centre-State relations, not municipalities.

Trap

Municipalities are in Part IXA; Part XI is Union-State relations.

Match List-I with List-II and choose the correct answer using the code given below the lists.

List-I (Lok Sabha): A. 11th Lok Sabha B. 12th Lok Sabha C. 14th Lok Sabha D. 17th Lok Sabha

List-II (Lok Sabha Speaker): 1. Om Birla 2. P.A. Sangma 3. Somnath Chatterjee 4. G.M.C. Balyogi

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (a) & explanation

Option (a), A-2, B-4, C-3, D-1, is correct. P.A. Sangma was Speaker of the 11th Lok Sabha (1996-98), the first tribal Speaker. G.M.C. Balayogi was Speaker of the 12th (1998-99) and was re-elected for the 13th Lok Sabha; he died in a helicopter crash in 2002. Somnath Chatterjee, of the CPI(M), was Speaker of the 14th (2004-09). Om Birla was Speaker of the 17th (2019-24) and was re-elected for the 18th in 2024. Options (b), (c) and (d) misplace these. Concept: Meira Kumar (15th) was the first woman Speaker, and Sumitra Mahajan held the post in the 16th. The Speaker is elected under Article 93. Trap: Sangma (11th) came before Balayogi (12th).

Trap

Sangma (11th) came before Balayogi (12th).

Which among the following words were inserted in the Preamble of the Indian Constitution by the 42nd Constitution Amendment?

  • 1. Socialist
  • 2. Secular
  • 3. Sovereign
  • 4. Republic

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (d) & explanation

Option (d), 1 and 2, is correct. The 42nd Amendment (1976), passed during the Emergency, added 'Socialist' and 'Secular' to the Preamble, so India became a 'Sovereign Socialist Secular Democratic Republic'. It also changed 'unity of the Nation' to 'unity and integrity of the Nation'. 'Sovereign' (3) and 'Republic' (4) were part of the original Preamble from 26 January 1950, so options (a), (b) and (c) are wrong. Concept: in Berubari (1960) the Court said the Preamble was not part of the Constitution, but Kesavananda (1973) held that it is and can be amended, though not in its basic structure. In 2024, the Supreme Court dismissed petitions challenging these words. The Preamble is based on Nehru's Objectives Resolution.

Trap

'Sovereign' and 'Republic' were there from 1950; 1976 added socialist, secular and integrity.

Which of the following is/are a Financial Committee of Parliament in India?

  • 1. Public Accounts Committee
  • 2. Estimate Committee
  • 3. Committee on Public Undertakings

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (c) & explanation

Option (c), all 1, 2 and 3, is correct. Parliament's three financial committees are the Public Accounts Committee (22 members: 15 Lok Sabha and 7 Rajya Sabha), the Estimates Committee (30 members, all from the Lok Sabha) and the Committee on Public Undertakings (22 members: 15 Lok Sabha and 7 Rajya Sabha). Options (a), (b) and (d) leave out one or more. Concept: the PAC dates from 1921 and examines CAG reports. The Estimates Committee, described as a continuous economy committee, suggests economies in spending and is the largest committee. COPU (1964) examines public sector undertakings. Ministers cannot be members. Departmentally related standing committees (24 since 1993) also examine Demands for Grants. Trap: the Estimates Committee has no Rajya Sabha members.

Trap

There are three financial committees, including the Committee on Public Undertakings.

Consider the formation of the following States of India and arrange them in correct chronological order starting from the earliest to the last.

  • 1. Punjab
  • 2. Arunachal Pradesh
  • 3. Nagaland
  • 4. Sikkim

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (b) & explanation

Option (b), 3, 1, 4, 2, is correct. Nagaland became a State on 1 December 1963, carved out of Assam. Punjab was reorganised on 1 November 1966 under the Punjab Reorganisation Act, creating Haryana and transferring hill areas to Himachal. Sikkim became the 22nd State in 1975 by the 36th Amendment, after a referendum ended the monarchy. Arunachal Pradesh became a State on 20 February 1987, along with Mizoram, while Goa followed in May 1987. Options (a), (c) and (d) misorder these. Concept: Andhra (1953) was the first linguistic state. Later States include Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand and Jharkhand (2000) and Telangana (2014). Article 371A protects Nagaland's customary law. Note: Punjab existed from 1950, so 'formation' here means the 1966 reorganisation.

Trap

Punjab was reorganised in 1966 but Nagaland became a state earlier, in 1963.

Who among the following were the members of the Fazal Ali Commission?

  • 1. K. T. Shah
  • 2. K. M. Panikkar
  • 3. P. Sitaramaiah
  • 4. H. N. Kunjaru

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (c) & explanation

Option (c), 2 and 4, is correct. The States Reorganisation Commission, set up in December 1953, was chaired by Justice Fazl Ali, and its two members were K.M. Panikkar, a historian and diplomat, and Hriday Nath Kunzru, a public figure. K.T. Shah (1) was a Constituent Assembly member and economist, and Pattabhi Sitaramayya (3) sat on the JVP Committee, so options (a), (b) and (d) are wrong. Concept: the commission reported in 1955. It accepted language as a basis for reorganisation but rejected 'one language, one state'. The States Reorganisation Act, 1956 created 14 States and 6 UTs. Before it, the Dhar Commission (1948) and the JVP Committee (Nehru, Patel, Sitaramayya, 1948-49) had opposed linguistic states. Trap: Sitaramayya was in the JVP Committee, not the Fazl Ali Commission.

Trap

K.T. Shah and Pattabhi Sitaramayya were not members; the SRC was Fazl Ali, Panikkar and Kunzru.

  • 1. Neelam Sanjiva Reddy
  • 2. K.R. Narayanan
  • 3. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam
  • 4. R. Venkataraman

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (a) & explanation

Option (a), 1, 4, 2, 3, is correct. Neelam Sanjiva Reddy was President from 1977 to 1982 and was the only President elected unopposed. R. Venkataraman served from 1987 to 1992. K.R. Narayanan, the first Dalit President, served from 1997 to 2002. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, the missile scientist known as the People's President, served from 2002 to 2007. Options (b), (c) and (d) misorder them. Concept: Giani Zail Singh (1982-87) came between Reddy and Venkataraman, and Shankar Dayal Sharma (1992-97) between Venkataraman and Narayanan. Later Presidents were Pratibha Patil (first woman), Pranab Mukherjee, Ram Nath Kovind and Droupadi Murmu (since 2022, first tribal President). Trap: Narayanan came before Kalam.

List-I (Committees of Constituent Assembly): A. Union Constitution Committee B. Rules of Procedure Committee C. Drafting Committee D. Fundamental Rights Sub-committee

List-II (Chairman of Committees): 1. Dr. Rajendra Prasad 2. J. B. Kripalani 3. Dr. B. R. Ambedkar 4. Jawaharlal Nehru

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (b) & explanation

Option (b), A-4, B-1, C-3, D-2, is correct. Jawaharlal Nehru chaired the Union Constitution Committee, as well as the Union Powers Committee and the States Committee. Dr Rajendra Prasad chaired the Rules of Procedure Committee and the Steering Committee. Dr B.R. Ambedkar chaired the Drafting Committee, set up on 29 August 1947. J.B. Kripalani chaired the Fundamental Rights Sub-committee under the Advisory Committee, which Sardar Patel headed. Options (a), (c) and (d) misplace these. Concept: Sardar Patel also chaired the Provincial Constitution Committee. H.C. Mukherjee headed the Minorities Sub-committee, and Gopinath Bardoloi the North-East sub-committee. B.N. Rau was the constitutional adviser. Trap: Patel chaired the Advisory Committee, but Kripalani chaired the Fundamental Rights sub-committee.

With reference to Panchayati Raj Institutions in India which of the following statements is/are correct?

  • 1. Tenure of Panchayati Raj Institutions shall be of 5 years.
  • 2. In Panchayati Raj Institutions, out of the seats reserved, 1/4 of the seats shall be reserved for women belonging to Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe.

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (d) & explanation

Option (d), only 1, is correct. Article 243E gives every panchayat a five-year term from the date of its first meeting, and elections must be held before it ends or within six months of dissolution (statement 1). Statement 2 is wrong: Article 243D reserves not less than one-third, not one-fourth, of the seats reserved for SCs and STs for women of those groups. It also reserves at least one-third of all seats and chairperson posts for women. Concept: over 20 States, including Bihar (2006, the first), have raised women's reservation to 50%. The State Election Commission (Article 243K) runs the elections, and the State Finance Commission (Article 243I) is set up every five years. The minimum age to contest is 21. Trap: one-third, not one-fourth.

With reference to 'Vice-President of India', which of the following statements is/are correct?

  • 1. The Vice-President is the ex-officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha.
  • 2. Vice-President is a member of the Rajya Sabha.

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (d) & explanation

Option (d), only 1, is correct. Under Article 64, the Vice-President is the ex-officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha (statement 1). Statement 2 is wrong: the Vice-President is not a member of the Rajya Sabha or of any House. Article 66 says that if a member of a legislature is elected Vice-President, the seat is vacated. So, as Chairman, the Vice-President has no ordinary vote and casts only a deciding vote in a tie. Concept: the Vice-President is elected by members of both Houses of Parliament, including nominated members but not State legislators, and can be removed by a Rajya Sabha resolution passed by an effective majority and agreed to by the Lok Sabha. After Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned in July 2025, C.P. Radhakrishnan was elected in September 2025. Trap: presiding over a House is not membership of it.

Trap

The Vice-President chairs the Rajya Sabha but is not a member of it, so he votes only to break a tie.

Which of the following languages is/are NOT included in the Eighth Schedule of Indian Constitution?

  • 1. Nepali
  • 2. Dogri
  • 3. Bodo
  • 4. Bhojpuri

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (c) & explanation

Option (c), only 4, is correct. Bhojpuri is not in the Eighth Schedule, though there has been a long demand to add it. Nepali (1), along with Konkani and Manipuri, was added by the 71st Amendment in 1992. Dogri (2) and Bodo (3), along with Maithili and Santali, were added by the 92nd Amendment in 2003. So options (a), (b) and (d) are wrong. Concept: the Eighth Schedule now lists 22 languages. Sindhi was added by the 21st Amendment in 1967. Pending demands include Bhojpuri, Rajasthani, Bhoti and Tulu. In 2024 the Centre gave classical status to Marathi, Pali, Prakrit, Assamese and Bengali, raising the classical languages to 11. Trap: Bhojpuri is widely spoken in UP and Bihar but is still not scheduled.

Trap

Bhojpuri is widely spoken, yet it is not in the Eighth Schedule; Nepali, Bodo and Dogri are.

Given below are two statements, one is labelled as Assertion (A) and the other as Reason (R).

Assertion (A): Directive Principles are important for economic, social and political functions in a Modern Democratic State.

Reason (R): The core objectives of Directive Principles is to establish economic and social democracy.

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (d) & explanation

Option (d), both true and R explains A, is correct. The Directive Principles of State Policy (Part IV, Articles 36-51) guide the State on social, economic and political matters, so they are important in a modern democratic state. Their main aim is a welfare state with economic and social democracy, as Ambedkar said, while the Fundamental Rights secure political democracy. So R explains A. Concept: DPSPs are not enforceable in court (Article 37) but are fundamental in governing the country. Examples include equal pay for equal work (Article 39(d)), village panchayats (Article 40), a uniform civil code (Article 44) and protection of the environment (Article 48A). In Minerva Mills (1980), the Court said the balance between Fundamental Rights and DPSPs is part of the basic structure. Trap: R gives the reason for A.

With reference to the 'Joint Sitting of Parliament', which of the following statements is/are correct?

  • 1. Article 109 of the Constitution of India provides for the Joint Sitting of Parliament.
  • 2. A Joint Sitting of Parliament may be called to pass a Constitution Amendment Bill.

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (c) & explanation

Option (c), neither 1 nor 2, is correct. Statement 1 is wrong: the joint sitting of Parliament is under Article 108, not Article 109. Article 109 lays down the special procedure for Money Bills. The President calls a joint sitting to resolve a deadlock on an ordinary bill when one House rejects it, the Houses disagree on amendments, or more than six months pass without it being passed. The Speaker presides. Statement 2 is wrong: no joint sitting can be held for a Constitution Amendment Bill (each House must pass it separately by a special majority) or for a Money Bill. Concept: only three joint sittings have been held, for the Dowry Prohibition Act (1961), the Banking Service Commission Repeal Bill (1978) and POTA (2002). Trap: Article 108, not 109.

Trap

Article 109 is about Money Bills; joint sittings are Article 108, and never for amendments.

Consider the following Election Reforms in India and arrange them in correct chronological order starting from earliest to the last.

  • 1. Voters photo identity card
  • 2. Electronic voting machine
  • 3. Voter verifiable paper audit trail
  • 4. NOTA

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (d) & explanation

Option (d), 2, 1, 4, 3, is the official key. Electronic voting machines were first used in 1982 in the Paravur by-election in Kerala and then used across the country from 2004. Electoral Photo Identity Cards were introduced in 1993 under T.N. Seshan. NOTA was added after the Supreme Court's PUCL judgment in September 2013 and first used in assembly polls in November 2013. VVPAT was first tried in the Noksen by-election in Nagaland on 4 September 2013 and used in all Lok Sabha seats from 2019. Concept: in 2024, the Supreme Court refused to order a return to paper ballots or full VVPAT counting. Note: VVPAT's first use (September 2013) actually predates NOTA's (November 2013), which would give 2, 1, 3, 4 (option a); the key's order is doubtful, so check the final key.

Trap

VVPAT (Sep 2013) actually predates NOTA (Nov 2013).

Note: VVPAT (Noksen, 4 Sep 2013) predates NOTA's first use (Nov 2013); key's order 2,1,4,3 treats NOTA as earlier. Check final key.

Given below are two statements, one is labelled as Assertion (A) and the other as Reason (R).

Assertion (A): Public Interest Litigation in India is essential for the rule of law.

Reason (R): Public Interest Litigation provides effective access of Justice to socially and economically weaker sections.

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (d) & explanation

Option (d), both true and R explains A, is correct. Public Interest Litigation, developed in the late 1970s and 1980s by Justices P.N. Bhagwati and V.R. Krishna Iyer, relaxed the rule of locus standi so that any public-spirited person could approach the courts on behalf of those who cannot. This gives the poor, bonded labourers, prisoners and other weaker sections effective access to justice, which supports the rule of law. So R explains A. Concept: landmark PILs include Hussainara Khatoon (1979, undertrial prisoners), S.P. Gupta (1981), Bandhua Mukti Morcha (1984), M.C. Mehta (environment) and Vishaka (1997, sexual harassment). Even a letter can be treated as a writ petition, called epistolary jurisdiction. Courts have also warned against misuse of PIL. Trap: R gives the reason for A.

Trap

PIL relaxed locus standi, so R explains A.

Match List-I with List-II and choose the correct answer using the code given below the lists.

List-I (Schedule): A. 7th Schedule B. 8th Schedule C. 9th Schedule D. 10th Schedule

List-II (Subject): 1. Languages 2. Disqualification on ground of defection 3. Union, State and Concurrent lists 4. Validation of certain Acts/Regulations

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (c) & explanation

Option (c), A-3, B-1, C-4, D-2, is correct. The Seventh Schedule contains the Union, State and Concurrent Lists dividing legislative powers. The Eighth Schedule lists the 22 recognised languages. The Ninth Schedule, added by the First Amendment (1951), protects certain Acts and regulations, mostly land reform laws, from challenge. The Tenth Schedule, added by the 52nd Amendment (1985), deals with disqualification on grounds of defection. Options (a), (b) and (d) swap these. Concept: in I.R. Coelho (2007), the Supreme Court held that laws added to the Ninth Schedule after 24 April 1973 can be reviewed for basic structure violations. The Eleventh and Twelfth Schedules list panchayat and municipal subjects. The Fifth and Sixth Schedules deal with Scheduled and tribal areas. Trap: the Ninth validates laws, while the Tenth covers defection.

Trap

Ninth Schedule = validation of Acts; Tenth = defection.

With reference to Municipalities, which of the following statements is/are correct?

  • 1. The eligible age to be a member of municipality is 25 years.
  • 2. One-third of the total number of seats to be filled by direct election in the municipalities is reserved for women.

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (b) & explanation

Option (b), only 2, is correct. Statement 1 is wrong: under Article 243V, a person qualified to be a member of the State legislature can be a municipal member, but a person who is 21 years old is eligible. So the minimum age is 21, not 25. Statement 2 is right: Article 243T reserves at least one-third of the seats filled by direct election in every municipality for women, including within seats reserved for SCs and STs. Concept: the 74th Amendment (1992) set up three types of urban bodies: nagar panchayats for transitional areas, municipal councils for smaller cities and municipal corporations for larger ones. The term is five years (Article 243U), and the Twelfth Schedule lists 18 functions. Many States reserve 50% of seats for women. Trap: 25 is the age for the Lok Sabha.

Trap

The age to be a municipal member is 21, the legislature age, not 25.

With reference to 'Baking Soda', which of the following statements is/are correct?

  • 1. It is Sodium hydrogen carbonate.
  • 2. It is used in fire extinguishers.

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (b) & explanation

Option (b), both 1 and 2, is correct. Baking soda is sodium hydrogen carbonate, also called sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO₃) (statement 1). It is made by the Solvay process. In a soda-acid fire extinguisher, sodium bicarbonate solution reacts with sulphuric acid to release carbon dioxide, which smothers the fire (statement 2). Dry chemical powder extinguishers also use it. Concept: on heating, NaHCO₃ breaks down into sodium carbonate, water and CO₂, which is why it makes cakes rise. Baking powder is baking soda plus a mild acid such as tartaric acid. It is also an antacid. Washing soda is Na₂CO₃·10H₂O, and bleaching powder is CaOCl₂. Trap: do not confuse baking soda (NaHCO₃) with washing soda (Na₂CO₃).

Trap

Baking soda is NaHCO₃; washing soda is Na₂CO₃.

Which of the following two are the major constituent of Bio-gas?

  • 1. Methane
  • 2. Butane
  • 3. Carbon dioxide
  • 4. Carbon monoxide

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (a) & explanation

Option (a), 1 and 3, is correct. Biogas is made by anaerobic digestion of cattle dung, kitchen waste and crop residue. It is mainly methane (about 50-75%) and carbon dioxide (about 25-45%), with small amounts of hydrogen sulphide, hydrogen and nitrogen. Butane (2) is the main component of LPG, not biogas. Carbon monoxide (4) is not a significant constituent, so options (b), (c) and (d) are wrong. Concept: the leftover slurry is good manure. Government schemes include GOBARdhan and SATAT, which promotes compressed biogas for transport, while the CBG blending mandate starts at 1% from 2025-26. CNG is mainly methane, and LPG is propane and butane. Trap: butane belongs to LPG, not biogas.

Trap

Butane is the gas in LPG; biogas is mainly methane plus carbon dioxide.

Match List-I with List-II and choose the correct answer using the code given below the lists.

List-I (Nuclear Power Plant): A. Kudankulam B. Kakrapar C. Kaiga D. Rawatbhata

List-II (State): 1. Karnataka 2. Tamil Nadu 3. Rajasthan 4. Gujarat

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (b) & explanation

Option (b), A-2, B-4, C-1, D-3, is correct. Kudankulam in Tamil Nadu has India's largest nuclear plant, built with Russian VVER reactors of 1,000 MW each. Kakrapar in Gujarat has India's first indigenous 700 MW pressurised heavy water reactors, with unit 3 going critical in 2021. Kaiga in Karnataka is on the Kali river. Rawatbhata in Rajasthan, near Kota, was set up with Canadian help, and units 7 and 8 there are 700 MW reactors. Options (a), (c) and (d) mix these up. Concept: Tarapur in Maharashtra (1969) was India's first nuclear plant. Other plants are Narora (UP), Kalpakkam (Tamil Nadu, with the fast breeder reactor) and Gorakhpur (Haryana, upcoming). India's nuclear target is 100 GW by 2047.

Trap

Kakrapar = Gujarat; Kaiga = Karnataka.

Which of the following gasses is/are lighter than air?

  • 1. Hydrogen chloride
  • 2. Sulfur dioxide
  • 3. Helium

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (c) & explanation

Option (c), only 3, is correct. Whether a gas is lighter than air depends on its molar mass compared with air's average of about 29 g/mol. Helium has a molar mass of 4, so it is much lighter and is used in weather balloons and airships. It is also non-flammable, unlike hydrogen. Hydrogen chloride (36.5 g/mol) and sulphur dioxide (64 g/mol) are heavier than air, so options (a), (b) and (d) are wrong. Concept: other gases lighter than air include hydrogen (2), methane (16), ammonia (17), neon (20) and nitrogen (28). Carbon dioxide (44), chlorine (71) and LPG are heavier, which is why leaking LPG collects near the floor. Trap: HCl has hydrogen in it but is heavier than air.

Trap

HCl sounds light because of the hydrogen, but at 36.5 g/mol it is heavier than air (29).

With reference to 'earthworms', which of the following statements is/are correct?

  • 1. Earthworms improves soil fertility and are known as farmer's friends.
  • 2. Earthworm has two pair of hearts.

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (d) & explanation

Option (d), only 1, is correct. Earthworms burrow, aerate and loosen the soil, help water soak in and mix organic matter into it. Their castings are rich in nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, so they are called the farmer's friend (statement 1). Vermicomposting uses species such as Eisenia fetida. Statement 2 is wrong: an earthworm has no true heart. It has five pairs of aortic arches, or lateral hearts, in segments 7 to 11, not two pairs. Concept: earthworms belong to the phylum Annelida. They breathe through moist skin, are hermaphrodites but need a mate, and Darwin wrote a book on them. Other count facts: a cockroach has a 13-chambered heart, and an octopus has three hearts. Trap: 'two pairs' should be five pairs.

Trap

Earthworms have no true heart: they have five pairs of aortic arches.

Which of the following enzymes is/are released in stomach for protein digestion?

  • 1. Chymotrypsin
  • 2. Trypsin
  • 3. Pepsin

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (c) & explanation

Option (c), only 3, is correct. Pepsin is made in the stomach. Chief cells secrete it as inactive pepsinogen, and hydrochloric acid from the parietal cells turns it into active pepsin, which works best in strong acid (pH about 1.5-2). It breaks proteins into smaller peptides. Trypsin and chymotrypsin are secreted by the pancreas, also as inactive forms (trypsinogen and chymotrypsinogen), and act in the small intestine, where the medium is alkaline. So options (a), (b) and (d) are wrong. Concept: enterokinase from the intestine activates trypsinogen. Rennin, found in infants, curdles milk, and gastric lipase acts on fats. Digestion of starch starts in the mouth with salivary amylase (ptyalin). Trap: trypsin acts on protein but not in the stomach.

Trap

Trypsin and chymotrypsin are pancreatic enzymes; only pepsin works in the stomach.

Which of the following statements with reference to 'blood' is/are correct?

  • 1. Blood is composed of plasma and different types of cells.
  • 2. The presence of haemoglobin makes blood appear red.

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (b) & explanation

Option (b), both 1 and 2, is correct. Blood is a fluid connective tissue made of plasma, the liquid part (about 55%, mostly water with proteins, salts and nutrients), and formed elements: red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets (statement 1). Haemoglobin, an iron-containing protein in red cells, carries oxygen and gives blood its red colour (statement 2). Concept: red cells live about 120 days, are made in red bone marrow and lack a nucleus in mammals. White cells fight infection, and platelets help clotting. Blood groups (ABO) were discovered by Karl Landsteiner, and O negative is the universal donor. A normal adult has about 5-6 litres of blood. Trap: plasma is pale yellow, and the red colour comes only from haemoglobin.

Trap

Red colour comes from haemoglobin; plasma is pale yellow.

Which of the following pairs is/are NOT correctly matched?

(Acid – Acid found in)

  • 1. Lactic acid – Curd
  • 2. Tartaric acid – Grapes
  • 3. Acetic acid – Potato

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (c) & explanation

Option (c), only 3, is correct. Pair 3 is wrong: acetic acid (ethanoic acid) is found in vinegar, not potato. The other pairs are correct: lactic acid is found in curd and sour milk, formed when bacteria (Lactobacillus) ferment milk sugar, and also builds up in tired muscles. Tartaric acid is found in grapes and tamarind and is used in baking powder. Concept: other natural acids include citric acid (lemon, orange), oxalic acid (tomato, spinach), malic acid (apple), formic acid (ant and nettle sting), uric acid (urine) and butyric acid (rancid butter). Hydrochloric acid is in the stomach. Potatoes mainly contain starch. Trap: acetic acid = vinegar.

Trap

Acetic acid is in vinegar, not potato.

Which of the following statements is/are correct?

  • 1. Dolphins and Whales breathe through blowholes.
  • 2. Earthworm breathe through their skin.

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (b) & explanation

Option (b), both 1 and 2, is correct. Whales and dolphins are marine mammals, so they breathe air with lungs. They come to the surface and breathe through a blowhole on top of the head, which is really their nostril (statement 1). Toothed whales and dolphins have one blowhole, while baleen whales have two. Earthworms have no lungs or gills and exchange gases through their moist skin, which is why they come out of soil flooded by rain (statement 2). Concept: frogs breathe through skin and lungs. Fish use gills, insects use spiracles and tracheae, and spiders use book lungs. The Ganges river dolphin is India's national aquatic animal, and Project Dolphin began in 2020. Trap: dolphins are mammals, not fish.

Trap

Dolphins are mammals and breathe through a blowhole.

With reference to 'Silver articles', which of the following statements is/are correct?

  • 1. Silver articles turn black after some time when exposed to air.
  • 2. It happens due to coating of silver sulphide.

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (b) & explanation

Option (b), both 1 and 2, is correct. Silver articles turn black over time when exposed to air (statement 1). This tarnish happens because silver reacts with sulphur compounds, mainly hydrogen sulphide in the air, to form a thin black layer of silver sulphide, Ag₂S (statement 2). Concept: this is a type of corrosion. Other examples are the rusting of iron (hydrated iron oxide, reddish brown) and the green coating on copper (basic copper carbonate). Tarnish can be removed by placing silver in aluminium foil with baking soda and hot water, which reverses the reaction. Gold and platinum hardly corrode, so they are called noble metals. Trap: the black layer is silver sulphide, not silver oxide.

Trap

Tarnish on silver is silver sulphide, not oxide.

With reference to 'acid and bases', which of the following statements is/are correct?

  • 1. Acidic solutions have pH more than 7.
  • 2. Basic solutions have pH less than 7.

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (c) & explanation

Option (c), neither 1 nor 2, is correct. Both statements reverse the pH scale. On the scale of 0 to 14, a pH of 7 is neutral, as in pure water at 25°C. Acidic solutions have a pH below 7, and basic (alkaline) solutions have a pH above 7. So statement 1 (acids above 7) and statement 2 (bases below 7) are both wrong. Concept: pH is the negative logarithm of hydrogen ion concentration, so each unit is a tenfold change. Stomach acid is about pH 1.5-2, lemon juice about 2, blood about 7.4 (slightly basic), and milk of magnesia about 10. Rain with pH below 5.6 is called acid rain. Tooth enamel starts to decay below pH 5.5. Trap: the numbers are simply swapped.

Trap

The pH rule is reversed: acids are below 7 and bases above 7.

Consider the following elements found in a typical 70 kg man and arrange them in correct increasing order.

  • 1. Sodium
  • 2. Potassium
  • 3. Copper
  • 4. Iron

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (b) & explanation

Option (b), 3, 4, 1, 2, is correct. In a typical 70 kg adult, copper is a trace element of only about 0.07-0.1 g, iron about 4 g, mostly in haemoglobin, sodium about 100 g and potassium about 140 g. So the increasing order is copper, iron, sodium, potassium. Options (a), (c) and (d) misorder them. Concept: oxygen, carbon, hydrogen and nitrogen form about 96% of body mass. Calcium (about 1 kg) is the most abundant mineral, followed by phosphorus. Potassium is mainly inside cells, and sodium mainly outside. Copper and iron are both needed for making blood, and zinc and iodine are other trace elements. Trap: potassium, not sodium, is the larger amount.

Trap

Potassium (about 140 g) exceeds sodium (about 100 g) in the body.

With reference to 'Isotopes', which of the following statements is/are correct?

  • 1. Atoms with identical atomic numbers but different atomic mass numbers are known as isotopes.
  • 2. Protium, Deuterium and Tritium are isotopes of carbon.

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (d) & explanation

Option (d), only 1, is correct. Statement 1 is the right definition: isotopes are atoms of the same element with the same atomic number (same number of protons) but different mass numbers, because they have different numbers of neutrons. Statement 2 is wrong: protium (¹H), deuterium (²H) and tritium (³H) are isotopes of hydrogen, not carbon. Carbon's isotopes are carbon-12, carbon-13 and carbon-14. Concept: carbon-14 is used in radiocarbon dating, uranium-235 as nuclear fuel, cobalt-60 against cancer, and iodine-131 for thyroid disease. Heavy water (D₂O) slows neutrons in reactors, and tritium is radioactive. Isobars have the same mass number but different atomic numbers, as with argon-40 and calcium-40. Trap: protium, deuterium and tritium belong to hydrogen.

Trap

Protium, deuterium and tritium are isotopes of hydrogen, not carbon.

Arrange the following electromagnetic radiations in decreasing order of their frequencies.

  • 1. Gamma rays
  • 2. Ultraviolet rays
  • 3. Radio waves
  • 4. X-rays

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (b) & explanation

Option (b), 1, 4, 2, 3, is correct. In the electromagnetic spectrum, frequency rises as wavelength falls. Gamma rays have the highest frequency and shortest wavelength, followed by X-rays, then ultraviolet rays, and radio waves have the lowest frequency of the four. So the decreasing order is gamma, X-rays, ultraviolet, radio. Options (a), (c) and (d) misorder them. Concept: the full sequence, from high to low frequency, is gamma rays, X-rays, ultraviolet, visible light (violet to red), infrared, microwaves and radio waves. All travel at the speed of light in a vacuum. Gamma rays come from nuclear decay, X-rays are used in imaging, UV causes sunburn, and microwaves heat food. Energy of radiation goes up with frequency. Trap: X-rays come below gamma rays.

Trap

X-rays rank between gamma and ultraviolet; radio waves are lowest.

UPPCS Prelims 2025 · GS Paper I

Given below are two statements, one is labelled as Assertion (A) and the other as Reason (R).

Assertion (A): Generally an alloy of lead and tin is used as a material of the fuse wire.

Reason (R): Alloy of lead and tin has a higher melting point than copper and aluminium.

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (b) & explanation

Option (b), A true and R false, is correct. A fuse wire is a safety device that must melt quickly and break the circuit when the current gets too high. So it is usually made of a lead-tin alloy, about 63% tin and 37% lead, chosen for its low melting point and suitable resistance. So A is true. R is false because the alloy has a lower melting point than copper (about 1,085°C) and aluminium (about 660°C), not a higher one. That low point is exactly why it is used. Concept: the fuse is connected in series with the live wire, and modern homes use MCBs (miniature circuit breakers) instead. Solder is also a lead-tin alloy. Heating elements use nichrome for its high melting point and resistance. Trap: the fuse needs a low, not high, melting point.

Trap

A fuse needs a low melting point, so R's 'high melting point' is false.

UPPCS Prelims 2025 · GS Paper I

Given below are two statements, one is labelled as Assertion (A) and the other as Reason (R).

Assertion (A): Evaporation of sweat from human skin dissipates body heat.

Reason (R): High humidity on a hot day increases discomfort.

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (a) & explanation

Option (a), both true but R not the explanation, is correct. Sweat cools the body because, as it evaporates, it takes latent heat of vaporisation from the skin, so A is true. On a hot and humid day, the air is already nearly saturated with water vapour, so sweat evaporates slowly, and we feel sticky and uncomfortable, so R is also true. But R describes a separate effect, the discomfort caused by humidity, and does not explain why evaporation removes heat. Concept: this is why desert coolers work well in dry heat but poorly in humid weather. The heat index and wet-bulb temperature measure combined heat and humidity, and a wet-bulb temperature near 35°C is dangerous to humans. Note: R is a consequence of A's mechanism, so (d) is arguable, but the key treats R as not explaining A.

Trap

Humidity is a separate effect; R does not explain A.

UPPCS Prelims 2025 · GS Paper I

Given below are two statements, one is labelled as Assertion (A) and the other as Reason (R).

Assertion (A): Voices of men and women are different.

Reason (R): Length and thickness of vocal cord is different in men and women.

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (d) & explanation

Option (d), both true and R explains A, is correct. Voice is produced when air from the lungs makes the vocal cords in the larynx vibrate. The pitch of the voice depends on how often the cords vibrate. Men usually have longer and thicker vocal cords, about 17-25 mm, which vibrate more slowly, at roughly 85-180 Hz, giving a deeper voice. Women have shorter and thinner cords, about 12-17 mm, which vibrate faster, at about 165-255 Hz, giving a higher pitch. So R explains A. Concept: at puberty, testosterone enlarges the male larynx, which shows as the Adam's apple and causes the voice to 'break'. Pitch depends on frequency, loudness on amplitude, and quality (timbre) on overtones. Trap: R gives the physical cause of A.

Trap

Longer, thicker vocal cords give a lower pitch, so R explains A.

As per the One District One Product (ODOP) scheme of Uttar Pradesh, Moonj products are associated with which of the following districts?

  • 1. Amethi
  • 2. Sultanpur
  • 3. Sant Kabir Nagar

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (d) & explanation

Option (d), 1 and 2, is correct. Under Uttar Pradesh's One District One Product scheme, launched in January 2018, moonj (munj grass) products are listed for Sultanpur and Amethi. Moonj grass is woven into baskets, mats and decorative items. Sant Kabir Nagar (3) is listed for brassware (Magahar), so options (a), (b) and (c) are wrong. Concept: other well-known UP ODOP products include Varanasi silk, Moradabad brassware, Firozabad glass, Bhadohi carpets, Agra leather, Kannauj perfume, Aligarh locks, Lucknow chikankari and Meerut sports goods. The Union government adopted ODOP nationally, and the Unity Mall scheme showcases these products. Trap: Sant Kabir Nagar is a nearby eastern UP district, but its ODOP product is brassware, not moonj.

Trap

Sant Kabir Nagar is brassware; moonj belongs to Sultanpur and Amethi.

Which of the following districts is/are part of the Devipatan Division in Uttar Pradesh?

  • 1. Basti
  • 2. Bahraich
  • 3. Balrampur

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (b) & explanation

Option (b), only 2 and 3, is correct. Devipatan division, with its headquarters at Gonda, includes Gonda, Bahraich, Shravasti and Balrampur districts. Basti (1) is the headquarters of a separate Basti division, which also includes Siddharthnagar and Sant Kabir Nagar, so options (a), (c) and (d) are wrong. Concept: the division takes its name from the Devipatan Shaktipeeth temple at Tulsipur, Balrampur. The Indo-Nepal border runs along Bahraich, Shravasti and Balrampur, and Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary is in Bahraich. Shravasti is an ancient Buddhist site where the Buddha spent many rainy seasons. Uttar Pradesh has 18 divisions and 75 districts. Trap: Basti is next door but is its own division.

  • 1. Sarsai Nawar Jheel
  • 2. Samaspur Bird Sanctuary
  • 3. Rudrasagar Lake
  • 4. Sultanpur National Park

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (c) & explanation

Option (c), 3 and 4, is correct. Rudrasagar Lake (3) is a Ramsar site in Tripura, and Sultanpur National Park (4) is a Ramsar site in Haryana, near Gurugram. So these two are not in Uttar Pradesh. The others are UP Ramsar sites: Sarsai Nawar Jheel in Etawah, known for sarus cranes, and Samaspur Bird Sanctuary in Raebareli. So options (a), (b) and (d) are wrong. Concept: Uttar Pradesh has 10 Ramsar sites, including Nawabganj (Unnao), Parvati Arga (Gonda), Saman (Mainpuri), Sandi (Hardoi), Sur Sarovar (Agra), Upper Ganga (Brijghat-Narora), Bakhira (Sant Kabir Nagar) and Haiderpur (Muzaffarnagar). India passed 90 Ramsar sites in 2025. Trap: the name Sultanpur sounds like UP, but the park is in Haryana.

Answer (b) & explanation

Option (b), 2 and 3, is correct. In the India State of Forest Report 2023, Chandauli has about 21.6% of its area under forest, and Shravasti about 21% using the Forest Survey's own district area. Both clear the 20% mark. Bahraich (1) is only about 10%, despite the Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary, so options (a), (c) and (d) are wrong. Concept: Sonbhadra is UP's most forested district, at about 35%, and Kheri has the second largest forest area. UP has about 15,000 sq km of forest cover, only about 6.2% of its area, among the lowest of large States. The ISFR is published every two years by the Forest Survey of India, Dehradun. Note: Shravasti falls below 20% if a larger district area figure is used, so the key rests on the FSI figure.

Trap

Bahraich has only about 10% forest, despite Katarniaghat.

Which of the following districts of Uttar Pradesh shares its boundary with only one other district of Uttar Pradesh?

  • 1. Lalitpur
  • 2. Saharanpur
  • 3. Sonbhadra

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (d) & explanation

Option (d), only 1, is correct. Lalitpur, in Bundelkhand, shares a boundary with only one Uttar Pradesh district, Jhansi; the rest of its boundary is with Madhya Pradesh, which nearly surrounds it. Saharanpur (2) borders Muzaffarnagar and Shamli in UP, as well as Uttarakhand and Haryana. Sonbhadra (3) borders Mirzapur and Chandauli in UP, and touches four other States. So options (a), (b) and (c) are wrong. Concept: Sonbhadra is the only UP district that borders four States: Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Bihar. Lalitpur has the Rani Laxmi Bai (Mata Tila) dam and the Jain temples at Deogarh. UP borders eight States and two UTs, plus Nepal. Trap: Saharanpur sits at the corner of UP but still touches two UP districts.

Trap

Lalitpur's other neighbours are in MP; within UP it borders only Jhansi.

UPPCS Prelims 2025 · GS Paper I

With reference to 'Uttar Pradesh', which of the following statements is/are correct?

  • 1. Uttar Pradesh is the leading producer of potato in the country.
  • 2. Government of India has approved for establishment of South Asia Regional Centre of International Potato Centre at Aligarh.

Select the correct answer from the code given below:

Answer (d) & explanation

Option (d), only 1, is correct. Uttar Pradesh is India's leading producer of potatoes, with about 30-35% of national output, followed by West Bengal and Bihar. Agra, Farrukhabad, Kannauj and Firozabad are leading districts (statement 1). Statement 2 is wrong: in June 2025 the Union Cabinet approved the South Asia Regional Centre of the International Potato Centre (CIP-SARC) at Singna in Agra district, not Aligarh. Concept: the International Potato Centre (CIP) is a CGIAR institute headquartered in Lima, Peru. The Central Potato Research Institute is at Shimla. India is the world's second-largest potato producer after China. The Kufri varieties come from CPRI. Trap: Agra, not Aligarh, is the CIP-SARC site.

Trap

CIP-SARC is at Singna, Agra, not Aligarh.
