The IISCO Burnpur water reservoir: what happened?

Steel plants need steady water for coke ovens and blast furnaces. A closed-loop reservoir and pump houses cut losses. IISCO is one of SAIL’s older integrated plants; this visit also reviewed COB-12 and blast furnace modernisation.

  • The integrated system includes a new Booster Pump House, a dedicated Pump House for COB-10 and a Process Water Pump House under construction for closed-loop circulation.
  • COB-12 (Stamp Charge Coke Oven Battery) was inspected: Battery Proper, Coke Dry Cooling Plant (CDQ), By-Product Plant and environmental systems.
  • The Minister held a review with SAIL leadership and met labour unions and the West Bengal Urban Development Minister on Centre-State coordination.
Back Story

Why does water infrastructure matter here?

  • The reservoir is sized for COB-10 needs and for the future 4.08 MTPA expansion.
  • Closed-loop circulation is meant to conserve water and cut losses while keeping the plant running.
