NESAC: what happened?
The Northeast has an international border with Myanmar and several long-running boundary disputes between States. Accurate satellite-based maps help both. NESAC also takes space technology to farms, forests and flood-prone villages in the region.
- The Minister asked NESAC to work with the North East Cane and Bamboo Development Council (NECBDC) on bamboo mapping.
- He sought more precise, location-specific flood early warnings.
- He asked for wider use of water harvesting models such as the one at Ramakrishna Mission, Cherrapunjee.
- Private tourism firms are to be drawn into the ManzilNE GeoTourism dashboard.
Why do maps matter here?
- Precise geospatial mapping supports border management in strategically important areas, in coordination with the agencies concerned.
- State Governments use NESAC data for planning, resource management and service delivery.
Why does NESAC matter?
- Security: Supports border management on the India-Myanmar frontier.
- Development: Space data for farms, floods, water and bamboo in the Northeast.
