INS Samarthak: what happened?
Think of Samarthak as the Navy’s Swiss army knife. Most warships are built for one main job; this one is built to do many smaller jobs well, so frontline ships are freed for combat duty.
- Commissioned on 16 October 2026 at Naval Base Karwar by Vice-President C. P. Radhakrishnan.
- PIB (13 Oct 2026): built by L&T under Make in India, first of two Multi-Purpose Vessels being inducted.
- Designed mainly for maritime surveillance and patrol, with an integrated combat suite of indigenous sensors, weapons and electronic systems.
- Crest: an Indian elephant rising from the waves. Motto: “Vijayartham Ekanishthata”, Victory is Our Sole Aim.
What is a Multi-Purpose Vessel?
A multi-purpose vessel is a mid-sized naval ship whose deck and systems can be reconfigured for different missions. PIB lists Samarthak’s roles:
- Maritime surveillance and patrol.
- Low Intensity Maritime Operations (LIMO), such as anti-piracy and anti-smuggling work.
- Target deployment and trials platform for new weapons and sensors.
- Mothership for unmanned and autonomous systems.
- Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR), conversion to a limited hospital ship, and salvage support.
How is Samarthak different from a frontline warship?
| Point | Frontline warship (destroyer/frigate) | INS Samarthak (MPV) |
|---|---|---|
| Main job | Sea control and combat | Utility, patrol, trials, support |
| Typical builder | Defence shipyards such as MDL, GRSE | Private yard: L&T |
| Value to fleet | Fighting power | Frees frontline ships; tests Indian systems at sea |
Which constitutional and policy provisions apply?
- Seventh Schedule, List I Entries 1 and 2: defence of India and the armed forces are Union subjects.
- Make in India (2014) and the Atmanirbhar Bharat push in defence aim to cut imports and build domestic capacity.
- Defence Acquisition Procedure 2020 gives priority to Indian-designed and Indian-made platforms, which opens space for private yards like L&T.
How does a trials platform help indigenisation?
From lab to fleet
- Indian firm or DRDO lab builds a new sensor or weapon
- Fitted on Samarthak for sea trials
- Tested in real maritime conditions
- Flaws fixed early, at lower cost
- Proven system inducted into frontline ships
Why does INS Samarthak matter?
| Angle | What to note |
|---|---|
| Security | More hulls for patrol and LIMO in a busy Indian Ocean. |
| Indigenisation | A private-yard platform with over 75% indigenous content (Indian Navy). |
| Technology | Unmanned mothership role fits the shift to drones at sea. |
| HADR | India’s ‘first responder’ role in the Indian Ocean gets one more ship. |
What are the challenges?
- Indigenous content still leaves key parts, such as some engines and electronics, dependent on imports.
- Private yards need steady orders to stay viable; one-off contracts raise costs.
- A ship that does many roles can be stretched thin if fleet numbers stay short.
- Testing new systems needs trained crews and quick feedback loops between Navy, DRDO and industry.
What should be done next?
- Deliver the second MPV on time and use both as regular trials ships.
- Give private and public yards a long-term order pipeline.
- Raise indigenous content further in propulsion and electronics.
- Build a clear doctrine for unmanned systems launched from such ships.
