Houthi–Saudi escalation: what happened?

India has a huge stake in the Gulf: millions of workers, most of its oil and key shipping lanes. So a war between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis is never a far-away story for us.

  • 21 Oct 2026: Houthi attack on King Fahd International Airport, Dammam: 2 killed, 8 injured; the Indian Embassy confirmed one Indian dead and two injured.
  • The Houthis also claimed strikes on the Saudi Defence Ministry in Riyadh, an Aramco facility in Yanbu and Abha airport; the MEA condemned attacks on Dammam airport and Aramco’s Shaybah field.
  • 22 Oct: the Houthis said Saudi forces hit a yacht with 14 Indians near Zuqar Island; on 23 Oct India said all 14 were safe around Hodeidah.
  • MEA: about 3,000 stranded Umrah pilgrims returned in a week; 24×7 control rooms are running in Riyadh and Jeddah.
Back Story

Who are the Houthis and why are they fighting Saudi Arabia?

  • The Houthis (Ansar Allah) are an Iran-aligned Zaidi Shia movement that captured Sana’a in 2014.
  • Saudi Arabia began bombing Yemen in 2015 to restore the government; a ceasefire was agreed in 2022 amid an Iran–Saudi thaw.
  • The ceasefire collapsed in July 2026 during the US–Iran war, after Saudi Arabia bombed Sana’a airport (The Hindu).
  • The Houthis say strikes will go on until Saudi Arabia lifts its blockade of Houthi-held areas; they have announced a blockade of Saudi Red Sea ports.

  • In India, the Emigration Act, 1983 and the MEA’s Indian Community Welfare Fund support Indians in distress abroad.
Fault Lines

What are the challenges for India?

  • Safety of the large Indian community in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf.
  • Oil supply and prices, as Aramco sites come under fire.
  • Shipping through Bab-el-Mandeb and the Red Sea gets costlier and riskier.
  • Limited reach in Houthi-held Yemen makes rescue hard.
Road Ahead

What should India do?

  • Keep evacuation plans and naval assets ready, as in Operation Raahat.
  • Back de-escalation and talks through Gulf partners and the UN.
  • Diversify crude sources and keep strategic reserves full.
  • Keep helplines and advisories updated for workers and pilgrims.
