India’s installed wind power capacity: what happened?
Wind is one of the three large renewable pillars with solar and hydro. Policy tools listed include Green Energy Corridor funding, ISTS charge waivers, 100% FDI under the automatic route, RPO/RCO trajectories to 2029-30, offshore wind VGF and lease rules, and the 2023 repowering policy.
- Top State capacities (MW): Gujarat 16,086; Tamil Nadu 12,273; Karnataka 8,896; Maharashtra 6,318; Rajasthan 5,516.
- ISTS charges were waived for inter-state solar and wind projects commissioned by 30 June 2025, with graded charges thereafter.
- A transmission plan runs to 2030; offshore wind lease rules were notified on 19 December 2023.
Which demand-side rules support wind?
- RPO followed by RCO trajectories notified till 2029-30, with penalties for designated consumers under the Energy Conservation Act, 2001.
- Green Energy Open Access Rules, 2022, for consumers of 100 kW or more.
- Green Term Ahead Market for exchange-based RE sale.
How fast has wind capacity and generation grown?
| Year | Addition (MW) | Generation (billion units) |
|---|---|---|
| 2023-24 | 3,253 | 83 |
| 2024-25 | 4,151 | 83 |
| 2025-26 | 6,057 | 106 |
Why does India’s installed wind power capacity matter?
| Angle | What to note |
|---|---|
| Energy | Wind at 57,443 MW supports non-fossil targets. |
| States | Gujarat and Tamil Nadu lead installed capacity. |
| Policy | ISTS waiver, RCO, offshore rules and repowering. |
| Investment | 100% FDI automatic route for RE including wind. |
What are the challenges in India’s installed wind power capacity?
- Generation stayed flat at 83 BU in 2023-24 and 2024-25 before jumping to 106 BU.
- Evacuation and night-time demand still constrain plant load factors.
- Offshore wind is policy-ready but still early in delivery.
What should be done next on India’s installed wind power capacity?
- Execute the transmission plan to 2030.
- Commission offshore VGF projects.
- Repower old turbines under the 2023 policy.
What can Prelims ask on India’s installed wind power capacity?
- Wind capacity 57,443 MW (30 Jun 2026); 106 BU in FY 2025-26.
- Additions: 3,253 / 4,151 / 6,057 MW over three years.
- Global rank 4th (GWEC, Dec 2025).
- Top States: Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Rajasthan.
