Indian astronomers catch a blue straggler star forming

Astronomers from the Indian Institute of Astrophysics and collaborators have caught a Blue Straggler Star in the act of forming, the Science Ministry said on 27 July 2026. In the binary system TIC 327546480, in the old open cluster Collinder 261 about 9500 light-years away, the star is pulling mass from its companion. It supports the mass-transfer theory.

The forming blue straggler star: what happened?
Blue stragglers are stars in clusters that look hotter, brighter and more massive than their neighbours, as if younger. The leading idea is that they gain mass from a companion or by merging. Direct proof has been rare. This system shows the process happening now.
- The binary is semidetached: one star has overflowed its Roche lobe and passes matter to the blue straggler.
- Strong X-ray emission confirms ongoing accretion.
- The blue straggler has about 1.67 solar masses; the donor about 0.32.
- The orbit takes 2.11 days; the straggler spins at about 69.55 km/s.
- Mass transfer began about 5.46 billion years ago; the cluster is about 7 billion years old.
What is a Roche lobe?
- The gravitational boundary around a star in a binary; matter beyond it can flow to the other star.

What can Prelims ask on the forming blue straggler star?
- Blue Straggler Stars: hotter, brighter, more massive than cluster peers.
- System TIC 327546480 in Collinder 261; about 9500 light-years.

Questions students ask about this
What is a blue straggler star?
A star in a cluster that appears hotter, brighter and more massive than its peers, thought to gain mass from a companion or a merger.
What did the astronomers find?
A blue straggler in the binary TIC 327546480 that is actively pulling matter from its companion, caught in the act of formation.
Which telescopes were used?
NASA's TESS space mission for light curves and the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope in Chile for radial velocities.
