UPSC Mains 2022 GS Paper 3 Q4: model answer

Elaborate the scope and significance of the food processing industry in India.

10 marks150 wordsDirective: Elaborate

What the question wants

Elaborate on the scope and significance of India's food processing industry.

How to structure it

Scope, then significance.

  1. Status
  2. Scope by segment
  3. Economic significance
  4. Social significance

How to think it through

Scope: huge raw base (milk, fruit, vegetables, grains, fish, meat), rising urban demand, exports, millets, ready-to-eat. Significance: farm income, less wastage, jobs (12.8% of organised employment), exports, nutrition and food safety, rural industrialisation.

Model answer

Food processing employs about 12.8% of India's organised-sector workforce, and in 2023–24 it contributed 7.9% of manufacturing GVA (MoFPI). It is the bridge between India's farms and its factories.

Scope

  • Dairy: the world's largest milk output; cheese, ghee, milk powder.
  • Fruit and vegetables: pulp, juice, dehydrated and frozen products.
  • Grains and millets: ready-to-eat and bakery.
  • Marine and meat: shrimp and buffalo-meat exports.
  • Spices and plantation crops: high-value exports.

Economic significance

  • Farm income through value addition.
  • Lower post-harvest loss (about ₹1.53 lakh crore a year).
  • Exports and foreign exchange.
  • Investment: strong links to packaging, logistics and retail.
  • Crop diversification: assured processors encourage high-value crops.

Social significance

  • Rural jobs, many for women; micro-units under PMFME in every district.
  • Nutrition and food safety through fortified and hygienic food.
  • Reducing migration through rural industry.
  • Price stability: storable products smooth seasonal gluts.
  • Millet and nutrition foods that bring back traditional grains.

A food processing unit in every district can do for rural India what textile mills once did for its towns.

Draw: A pie of food processing segments.

Keywords, cases and data to drop in

food processing, 12.8% organised employment, 7.9% manufacturing GVA (2023–24), value addition, PMFME, PLISFPI, exports, post-harvest loss.
