How to think it through
Positive attitude: optimistic, solution-oriented mindset. Contributors: self-awareness, emotional intelligence, purpose/meaning (Viktor Frankl), resilience, gratitude, healthy habits (sleep, exercise, meditation), supportive family, mentors, team culture, recognition, past success (self-efficacy, Bandura), spiritual values (Gita nishkama karma). Example: COVID officers, Odisha cyclone Fani 2019 evacuation 1.2 million+.
Model answer
In May 2019, as Cyclone Fani approached, Odisha's officers moved over a million people in about a day. Pressure was extreme, yet the mood in control rooms was focused, not frantic. That is positive attitude at work.
What a positive attitude is
- A solution-seeking mindset that sees difficulty as a problem to be solved, not a threat to be feared.
Internal factors
- Sense of purpose: Viktor Frankl argued that people survive hardship when they know why they are doing it.
- Self-efficacy: Bandura's idea that past success builds belief in future success.
- Emotional intelligence: knowing and managing one's stress.
- Detachment from results: the Gita's nishkama karma lets one work hard without being crushed by outcomes.
- Healthy habits: sleep, exercise and meditation.
External factors
- Supportive family and friends.
- Good leadership and team culture that share credit and absorb blame.
- Recognition and fair appraisal.
- Mentors who have survived similar storms.
For a civil servant
- Break crises into tasks, rely on the team, and look after one's health.
A positive attitude is not pretending all is well; it is believing that something can still be done.
Draw: A tree: roots (purpose, self-efficacy, habits), trunk (resilience), branches (calm, solutions, teamwork).
