On 8 August 2026 the Petroleum Ministry said oil marketing companies ran extra nationwide tests on E20 petrol after media reports of moisture and up to 500 ppm chloride. Refinery petrol showed 1 ppm or less, distillery ethanol under 3 ppm, and retail samples 0 to 3 ppm. Only four outlets showed high chloride; their supply was suspended.
- Released
- 8 Aug 2026, MoPNG
- Claim tested
- 500 ppm chloride and moisture in E20
- Refinery petrol
- over 100 samples, at or below 1 ppm
- Distillery ethanol
- 80 distilleries in 10 days, under 3 ppm
- Retail outlets
- 160 reports analysed, 0 to 3 ppm; 4 outliers suspended
- Water checks
- about 90,000 outlets, 8 to 12 times a day
E20 petrol quality testing: what happened?
India now blends 20 per cent ethanol into petrol (2025-26). Ethanol is a big part of the energy-security plan, because India imports close to 88.5 per cent of its crude oil. So when reports said E20 carried water and chloride that could harm engines, the oil companies tested the whole supply chain.
- Testing covered refineries, distilleries, depots and terminals, and retail outlets.
- Over 80 samples from depots and terminals showed chloride below 3 ppm.
- Mobile testing labs were deployed; results are validated by fuel laboratories.
- Underground tanks have shown no water ingress so far.
- Test summaries are on the website of the Centre for High Technology (CHT).
Why does fuel quality matter for ethanol blending?
- The Ethanol Blended Petrol Programme took blending from less than 1.5 per cent in 2013-14 to 20 per cent in 2025-26 (PIB backgrounder, July 2026).
- Public trust in fuel quality keeps the programme going.
- The government has a stringent chloride specification for blending ethanol and a high-frequency monitoring system.
Why does E20 petrol quality testing matter?
- Energy security: Ethanol cuts crude imports; doubts about quality could slow it.
- Consumer protection: Testing and quick suspension protect vehicle owners.
What can Prelims ask on E20 petrol quality testing?
- E20 chloride tests (Aug 2026): refinery petrol at or below 1 ppm; ethanol and retail samples under 3 ppm.
- Claim not validated: 500 ppm chloride.
- CHT: Centre for High Technology, publishes test summaries.
- Blending: 20 per cent in 2025-26.
How to use this in Mains
- As per PIB (2026-08-08): OMCs' nationwide testing found claims of 500 ppm chloride and moisture in E20 petrol not validated.
- The biofuel transition depends on public trust in fuel quality.
Quotable data pointOMCs' nationwide testing found claims of 500 ppm chloride and moisture in E20 petrol not validated.

Questions students ask about this
Did tests find high chloride in E20 petrol?
No. Retail samples were in the 0 to 3 ppm range, against claims of 500 ppm. Only four isolated outlets showed elevated levels, and their supply was suspended.
Was water found in fuel tanks?
No. About 90,000 outlets check underground tanks 8 to 12 times a day and found no water ingress so far.
Where are the test results published?
On the website of the Centre for High Technology (CHT).
