On 14 August 2026 the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting decided to remove the 12-minute advertisement duration cap for television channels. The cap came in 2006 under the Cable Television Networks Rules, 1994. The Ministry said 900-plus channels, fully digital platforms and uncapped digital media now give enough competition.

The removal of the TV ad cap: what happened?
In 2006 viewers had few channels and analog cable with little space. A cap on ads protected them. Today there are hundreds of channels and digital media has no such limit. The Ministry says the market can now decide.
- Channels rose from 62 in 2006 to more than 900 now.
- DTH, cable, HITS and IPTV are all digital, carrying 300 to 500 channels or more.
- TV in India depends heavily on ads, pay or free-to-air.
- Digital media has no ad cap, so TV faced an uneven field.
Why was the cap there?
- Analog cable had limited carriage capacity and little consumer choice.
- With digitisation, viewers can switch easily, which checks excessive ads.
Why does the removal of the TV ad cap matter?
- Ease of doing business: More ad revenue for broadcasters.
- Consumers: Choice and competition are expected to limit ad clutter.
