In the news

India’s coconut sector: what happened?

The coconut palm is called Kalpavriksha, the tree that gives everything: food, oil, fibre, timber, fuel. Most growers are small and marginal farmers. Old palms, pests and disease have hurt yields, while exports of new products have grown fast. Policy now tries to fix the farm end and ride the export boom.

  • During 2025-26, about 2,175 hectares were added under coconut and 1,672 hectares rejuvenated.
  • The Coconut Development Board released ₹147.21 crore for its activities in 2025-26.
  • The Board produced 2.41 lakh quality seedlings in 11 demonstration-cum-seed production farms.
  • Budget 2026-27 announced the Coconut Promotion Scheme to tackle pests, root wilt disease and ageing plantations.
Back Story

What is copra and how is it supported?

  • Copra is the dried kernel of coconut and one of the 22 crops under MSP.
  • Milling copra is used for oil; ball copra is eaten as a dry fruit and used in rituals.
  • NAFED and NCCF are the central nodal agencies for copra procurement.
  • The 2026 MSP rose by ₹445 per quintal for milling copra and ₹400 for ball copra.
Back Story

How have exports changed?

  • Exports were just ₹25.3 crore in 2001-02, mostly shell charcoal, oil and desiccated coconut.
  • Now they include virgin coconut oil, coconut milk, coconut water and activated carbon; activated carbon leads in volume.
  • Markets have widened from the Middle East to Europe, the Americas and Australia.
