Causes of the French Revolution

- Fiscal crisis: debt from long wars, including support to the American War of Independence.
- Subsistence crisis: population growth and bad harvests drove up bread prices.
- Enlightenment ideas: John Locke (against divine right), Rousseau (The Social Contract, popular sovereignty), Montesquieu (The Spirit of the Laws, separation of powers).

Ideas and achievements
Popular sovereignty, equality before law, rights of man, secularisation, abolition of feudal dues, the metric system, and, briefly, abolition of slavery in the colonies (1794; Napoleon restored it in 1802, and it was finally abolished in 1848). Women’s clubs demanded equal rights, but the 1791 Constitution gave the vote only to “active citizens”, men who paid a certain tax.
Impact on the world and on India
It spread nationalism and liberal ideas across Europe, especially through Napoleon’s conquests and his Civil Code (1804). NCERT notes that Tipu Sultan and Raja Rammohan Roy were among Indians inspired by its ideas. The Preamble’s “liberty, equality, fraternity” is the most direct echo for Indian students.
Why the French Revolution matters for UPSC
GS-I world history lists “events from 18th century such as industrial revolution, world wars… political philosophies”. The French Revolution is the root of several of these: democracy, nationalism, liberalism and the debate on revolution vs reform.
