The National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems: what happened?
A cyber-physical system joins computing with physical machines through sensors, software and networks, so that machines can sense, decide and respond. Driverless cars, smart factories and patient monitors are examples. India wants its own capability here because such systems are becoming part of critical infrastructure.
- TIHs work on technology development, skills, start-ups and international collaboration.
- CHANAKYA Fellowship Programme has awarded 5,824 fellowships.
- More than 2.46 lakh professionals have been trained.
- Start-ups and spin-offs have created more than 24,000 jobs.
- The Mission has 200 international collaborations.
Where are the four Technology Translation Research Parks?
| Host | Domain |
|---|---|
| IIT Kanpur | Cybersecurity |
| IISc Bengaluru | Robotics and AI Systems |
| IIT (ISM) Dhanbad | Mining Technologies |
| IIT Indore | Digital Healthcare |
Selected in 2025 from high-performing TIHs (PIB Backgrounder, 31 Aug 2026).
What is BharatGen?
- A sovereign AI effort supported under NM-ICPS and led by IIT Bombay with a consortium.
- Its Param-2 foundation model has 17 billion parameters and supports all 22 Scheduled Indian languages.
- Shrutam (speech-to-text) and Sooktam (text-to-speech) support 12 Indian languages.
- Domain models include Ayur Param, Agri Param and Legal Param; Patram reads complex Indian documents.
What has the Mission delivered in different sectors?
| Sector | Example |
|---|---|
| Healthcare | CharakDT, a digital twin of the human body (Drishti CPS Foundation, IIT Indore) |
| Agriculture | Agri-IoT Farm Management System (IIT Bombay) |
| Mining | drones sending data up to 50 km (TEXMiN, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad) |
| Communication | 5G-Advanced ORAN Massive MIMO Radio Unit (IIIT Bengaluru) |
| Cybersecurity | IT-OT Security Operations Centre, crypto-forensic tools (IIT Kanpur) |
| Mobility | India’s first proving ground for autonomous navigation (TiHAN, IIT Hyderabad); iRASTE pilot in Nagpur |
How does NM-ICPS move an idea to market?
- Research at a Technology Innovation Hub
- Technology platform and prototype built
- Translation Research Park takes it towards deployment
- Start-up or licensing for commercial use
- Solutions offered to ministries for national challenges
Why does the National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems matter?
| Angle | What to note |
|---|---|
| Strategic tech | Indigenous CPS matters as it enters critical infrastructure. |
| Talent | CHANAKYA fellowships and 2.46 lakh trained professionals. |
| Start-ups | 1,136 start-ups and spin-offs with over 24,000 jobs. |
| Sovereign AI | BharatGen covers all 22 Scheduled languages. |
| Safety | Mining drones and road-risk alerts reduce danger to people. |
What are the challenges in the National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems?
- Moving from prototypes to large-scale commercial use is still the hard part.
- Connected systems widen the attack surface for cyber threats.
- Industry participation must grow for products to scale.
What should be done next on the National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems?
- Scale TTRP technologies into deployment.
- Expand iRASTE beyond Nagpur.
- Deepen academia-industry partnerships and global collaborations.
