Semicon 2.0: what happened?
A chip plant alone does not make a chip industry. It needs designers, machines, gases, chemicals, packaging units and trained hands around it. Semicon 1.0 put the first plants in place. Semicon 2.0 is about filling in the rest of the chain.
- Investment commitments of about ₹1 lakh crore have been received under Semicon 2.0.
- They are expected to turn into investment over the next two to three years, as companies get board and shareholder approval.
- Close to 1 lakh new jobs are expected across the ecosystem.
- 11 MoU exchanges and announcements were made at SEMICON India 2026.
What are the six pillars of Semicon 2.0?
| Pillar | What it covers |
|---|---|
| 1. Design ecosystem | scale fabless firms; funding, venture capital, customer discovery, IP protection; target 200 design start-ups |
| 2. Machines and materials | bring global equipment makers to India for design and manufacturing |
| 3. Fabs | display, memory, silicon, compound and logic fabs |
| 4. Advanced packaging | capabilities that improve efficiency and system-level performance |
| 5. Research and Development | applied R&D proposed by industry, co-funded by industry and Government, with academia |
| 6. Talent | upgrade chip-design curriculum to systems design; train 1 lakh technicians in five years |
What did Semicon 1.0 achieve, as per the note?
- It laid the foundation of the industry.
- 20 of the 105 semiconductor start-ups backed in the first phase have raised venture capital.
- Around 400 universities and institutes are teaching chip design.
- Facilities that have started commercial production are selling in the global market.
Which agreements were signed at SEMICON India 2026?
| Parties | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Tata Electronics and Nexperia | wafer manufacturing, assembly and test |
| Tata Electronics and Ascendas First Space | 363-acre vendor park at Dholera, Gujarat |
| Tata Electronics and Fujifilm | localising critical semiconductor materials |
| Tata Electronics and JSR Corporation | photoresists and advanced chemicals for the Dholera fab |
| Tata Electronics and BESI Singapore | advanced packaging |
| Tata Electronics and Semiconductor Laboratory (SCL) | design services, process technology, talent |
| India Semiconductor Mission and Intel India | ‘Introduction to Semiconductors’ course |
| Six ChipIN Regional Centres | wider access to chip-design tools |
How does Semicon 2.0 build the chain?
- Design start-ups and fabless firms
- Equipment, materials, gases and chemicals made in India
- Fabs of many types
- Advanced packaging
- Applied R&D with industry and academia
- Trained engineers and technicians
Why does Semicon 2.0 matter?
| Angle | What to note |
|---|---|
| Economy | About ₹1 lakh crore of commitments and close to 1 lakh jobs. |
| Strategic | Chips run phones, cars, power grids and defence; local supply cuts risk. |
| Supply chains | Firms looking to spread supply chains are eyeing India, says the Minister. |
| Skills | 1 lakh technicians and an upgraded design curriculum. |
| Federal | 12 State booths at SEMICON India show States competing for units. |
What are the challenges in Semicon 2.0?
- Commitments are not yet investment; they depend on company board approvals over two to three years.
- The Minister lists equipment, materials, gases and chemicals as capabilities still to be built at home.
- Global firms judge India on cost and quality, which the Minister says is central from project selection to production.
What should be done next on Semicon 2.0?
- Track how much of the ₹1 lakh crore turns into actual projects.
- Fill the technician pipeline through ITI and university tie-ups, including with ITRI, Taiwan.
- Watch the 200 design start-up target and venture funding for them.
What can Prelims ask on Semicon 2.0?
- Semicon 2.0 has six pillars: design, machines and materials, fabs, advanced packaging, R&D, talent.
- Target: 200 semiconductor design start-ups; 1 lakh technicians in five years.
- SEMICON India 2026 was held at Yashobhoomi, New Delhi.
- Dholera, Gujarat: Tata Electronics fab; 363-acre vendor park MoU.
