The TRAI voice-and-SMS voucher rule: what happened?

Many phone users, often poor or elderly, only make calls and send SMS. After the 12th Amendment of 2024, operators offered only a few voice-and-SMS packs, mostly with long validity, so these users had to pay for long packs or for data they did not use.

  • Voice-and-SMS-only STVs must match each validity of thirty days and less offered for voice, SMS and data packs, at a lower tariff.
  • A monthly pack must renew on the same date every month; if that date does not exist, on the last date of the month.
  • At least one voice-and-SMS STV with longer validity must also be offered.
