ARCI signs MoU to take sodium-ion battery cells to industry

Battle IAS current affairs title card: ARCI signs MoU to take sodium-ion battery cells to industry (GS3 · Technology / energy, 17 December 2025)

What happened

  • ARCI, a DST research centre, signed an MoU with Voltasun Technologies on 15 December 2025 to make and test 80 sodium-ion pouch cells (5 Ah) using ARCI’s Sodium Vanadium Phosphate (NVP) cathode, with a view to commercialisation [PIB].

Background

  • The work was done under the ANRF MAHA EV project. Sodium-ion cells can be safer and cheaper than lithium-ion [PIB].

Why it matters

  • Sodium is plentiful and India has little lithium. A working sodium-ion chain would cut import dependence for storage.
