The Jan Suraksha schemes: what happened?
Most poor families have no insurance and no pension. These three schemes give cheap cover through a bank account. After 11 years, enrolments run into crores.
- An online Jan Suraksha Portal now lets people enrol without visiting a branch.
- Claims processing has been digitised for faster settlement.
- PMJDY account holders: 8.09 crore in PMJJBY and 19.30 crore in PMSBY.

What are the challenges in the Jan Suraksha schemes?
- Insurance cover lasts one year and continues only if the auto-debit renews it each June.
- Claims paid are small compared with enrolments, so awareness of claims matters.
- APY pension amounts are fixed in rupees and lose value to inflation.
What should be done next on the Jan Suraksha schemes?
- Push renewals and claim awareness through banks and the portal.
- Use Jan Dhan accounts to keep the poorest enrolled.
