Coal imports in April 2026: what happened?

India has huge coal reserves, yet it still imports coal. Power plants import some for blending and some plants are designed only for imported coal. The Coal Ministry wants more domestic supply so these imports fall.

  • Imports for blending by domestic-coal plants fell 11.26%, from 0.71 MT to 0.63 MT.
  • Coking coal for steel rose because domestic coking coal reserves are limited.
  • The Ministry credits higher domestic output, First Mile Connectivity and coordination with Railways and Coal India.
Back Story

Why does India still import coking coal?

  • Coking coal is used in steel making.
  • The release says domestic coking coal reserves remain limited, so this import is driven by resource needs, not supply gaps.
Why examiners care

Why does coal imports in April 2026 matter?

  • Energy security: Lower import share for thermal power reduces exposure to world prices.
  • Steel: Coking coal remains an import dependence to watch.
